There is now a 2-door Range Rover. Of course, what I really mean is "there is once again a 2-door Range Rover." I say this because the Range Rover once offered two doors, back in the 1970s and 1980s, in its original body style. But that was a utilitarian workhorse — and the latest 2-door Range Rover is absolutely nothing like that.
Revealed at this year’s Geneva Auto Show, the latest Range Rover is officially called the Range Rover SV Coupe, and the styling is basically exactly what you’d expect — a Range Rover with two doors. What you might not expect is the price: Land Rover says it will start at $295,000 in the U.S., which makes it far more expensive than today’s most expensive luxury SUV, the Bentley Bentayga, and over $200,000 more expensive than a base-level Range Rover.
To be fair to the Range Rover SV Coupe, however, it’s not just a Range Rover with the back doors lopped off. For one, production will be ultra-limited, with Range Rover saying they’ll offer just 999 units for the entire world. The interior also appears to be a dramatic improvement over the standard Range Rover, with gorgeous materials and trim throughout. Noted by Land Rover in its Geneva press release, it is also the first Range Rover with 23-inch wheels.
Amazingly, I think this vehicle is a good idea — even though I’ve previously gone on long tirades about how much I despise 2-door SUVs. One reason I think it’s a good idea is that it’ll help elevate the Range Rover brand name, which Land Rover is seriously trying to do, in the wake of upcoming new luxury SUVs from Lamborghini, Aston Martin and Rolls-Royce, along with the aforementioned Bentayga. Land Rover feels that they own the top-level SUV space, and they don’t want to give it up easily.
The other reason I like the 2-door Range Rover: SUV sales are increasing at a rapid pace, and the simple truth is that people want SUVs for every function now — including coupes and convertibles. This vehicle is likely aimed at someone who wants the style of a Mercedes-AMG S65 Coupe but the practicality of a Range Rover — and they can now have both. At least, soon they can have both, as the Range Rover SV Coupe goes on sale near the end of 2018. Find a Range Rover for sale
