There are a lot of important classics and exotic cars listed for sale on Autotrader — and many of them, including basically all of the most expensive ones, are Italian, with brand names like Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maserati. But what about the Germans? I’ve rounded up the most expensive older German cars (1990 and earlier) listed on Autotrader from the largest German brands — and they’re included below.
The 1989 Porsche 911 Speedster is a famous car in the Porsche community, as it’s an icon: the look, especially, with the hump over the rear end and the low windshield line ensure this car will always be esteemed among Porsche models. The 1989 Speedster is especially rare as it’s the final model year of this body style — and Porsche sold just 823 in the United States. This particular 1989 Speedster is offered by Gaudin Porsche in Las Vegas, Nevada with 4,700 miles for $289,911 — a figure that makes it the most expensive older Porsche for sale on Autotrader.
There’s no secret that 1980s BMW M cars are gaining in value, very much including vehicles like this M6 — the high-performance version of BMW’s E24 6 Series, which was sold throughout the 1980s. This particular M6 is in pristine and amazing condition, with a gorgeous interior, very well-kept cosmetics all around and an odometer that reads just shy of 27,000 original miles. It’s offered by Enthusiast Auto Group in Cincinnati, Ohio, which is one of the well-known purveyors of some of the best older BMW models in existence, for $119,990.
This 1986 Mercedes-Benz 560SL is a handsome example of the "R107" model, which was sold throughout much of the 1970s and 1980s. The odometer reads just 7,004 miles, suggesting it has seen very little use — and it’s in pristine condition, with a perfectly preserved interior and exterior. It’s also the top version of this SL model, with the desirable 5.6-liter V8. It’s the most valuable older Mercedes-Benz model listed for sale on Autotrader, and it’s offered by Hyman LTD in Saint Louis, Missouri for $69,500.
Desirable versions of the Volkswagen Vanagon have crept up in value over the years — and this is a good example. This is a 1990 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia, with the desirable pop-up camper top. While most of these have been heavily used, this particular Vanagon has traveled just 73,000 miles from new, meaning it’s surprisingly well-preserved — and so it’s no surprise that this Vanagon is the most valuable Volkswagen currently listed for sale on Autotrader, offered by GR Auto Gallery in Grand Rapids, Michigan, for $34,900.
Not only does Audi not have any valuable older cars listed for sale on Autotrader, it doesn’t have any old cars at all, with just one single pre-1990 Audi currently offered for sale on the site. Expand our search to cars from 2000 and older and you get this as the most expensive Audi on Autotrader: a very nice, well-kept 2000 S4 sedan with just 66,000 miles. It’s an automatic, but a good example of the B5 S4, and it’s offered by World Class Automobiles in South River, New Jersey, for just $7,975.
