These Are the Six Most Expensive Used SUVs on Autotrader

The Hyundai Santa Fe. The Toyota Highlander. The Honda Pilot. These are normal SUVs, purchased by normal people who do normal things, like leave their phone chargers in hotel rooms. They aren’t even in the same league as the SUVs on our latest list, which shows off the six most expensive used SUVs currently for sale on Autotrader.

I’ve factored out new models, because otherwise this list would be entirely made up of Range Rovers and Mercedes G-Wagens, each boasting some pricey new special-edition trim package like the Westminster Edition, the Yellow Edition, the Holland and Holland Edition or the $5K More Expensive Than the Nicest G-Wagen Edition. With used SUVs, we get a little more crazy. A little more variation. A little more weird. And so, here are the six most expensive used SUVs you can currently buy on Autotrader.

2013 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG

2013 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG (With Brabus Tuning) – $230,000

The most expensive used SUV listed on Autotrader is this 4,300-mile 2013 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG, which is located in Dallas and available from a private seller for $230,000. Given that a brand-new G63 AMG starts around $141,000 before options, you might be wondering how a 3-year-old one could possibly justify a $90,000 markup. The seller’s explanation: $150,000 in aftermarket additions from high-end Mercedes-Benz tuner Brabus — additions that include a body kit, a hood, wheels and an exhaust. Find a 2013 Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG for sale

1997 Land Rover Defender 90 Custom Pickup

1997 Land Rover Defender 90 Custom Pickup – $219,985

Most car enthusiasts know that U.S.-market Land Rover Defender models are pretty pricey on the used market, but this one takes things a step beyond "pretty pricey." Then again, it also takes things a step beyond the normal Defender 90, as this one is possibly the ultimate Land Rover: a standard Defender 90 that’s been stretched to include four doors then modified to add a pickup-truck bed. If you’ve ever wanted a Land Rover pickup, you’ve found it — and it’s based on a ’97 Defender 90, from the SUV’s desirable final year, with just 36,000 miles. Unfortunately, it isn’t exactly cheap: Auto Group of San Antonio is offering it for $219,985. Find a 1997 Land Rover Defender for sale

2000 Hummer H1 Slantback

2000 Hummer H1 Slantback – $212,980

In the Hummer world, the ultimate body style of the brand’s famous H1 SUV is the Slantback — effectively a Hummer H1 wagon with a rear end that’s slanted instead of squared off. Only one problem: Hummer made just a handful of Slantback models for the consumer market before abandoning the body style due to leakage issues. Although it’s not stated whether this is one of the factory H1 Slantbacks or an aftermarket conversion, there’s no doubt it’s highly desirable — especially with just 40,000 miles on the odometer. Of course, Texas Direct Auto near Houston knows this: They’ve priced this H1 Slantback, which is also fitted with a modified interior and several exterior add-ons, at a pricey $212,980. Find a 2000 Hummer H1 for sale

2016 Tesla Model X P90DL

2016 Tesla Model X P90DL – $199,999

This 2016 Tesla Model X is the ultimate example of Tesla’s gull-wing/door crossover: a top-end P90DL model, which claims an insane 0-to-60 time of 3.2 seconds. And not only does this Model X have the SUV’s top-level powertrain, but it also features every option, including the rare Signature designation, which means it was one of the earliest examples to roll off the assembly line. Combine those benefits with the fact that this Model X has just 156 original miles — and that the Model X remains on waiting lists across the country — and you have a recipe for a very expensive SUV. Just how expensive? A private seller near Atlanta is offering this Model X for $199,999. Find a 2016 Tesla Model X for sale

2016 Mercedes-Benz G65 AMG

2016 Mercedes-Benz G65 AMG – $199,995

Few cars scream excess like the Mercedes-Benz G65 AMG. It offers excessive styling and excessive off-road capabilities — but so do all G-Wagen models. This one stands out because of its excessive powertrain: It’s a new G65 AMG, which features an almost unbelievable 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged V12 that boasts 612 horsepower and a ridiculous 738 lb-ft of torque. Possibly no other SUV in the world will ever be this breathtakingly excessive. And speaking of excess, the price tag isn’t exactly affordable: This 765-mile G65 AMG is available at Gold Coast Maserati on Long Island’s ritzy North Shore for an eye-popping $199,995. Find a 2016 Mercedes-Benz G 65 AMG for sale

2016 Range Rover LWB Autobiograph

2016 Range Rover LWB Autobiography – $174,995

It’s hard to draw up a list of expensive SUVs and not include the Range Rover, but it might surprise you to find out just how expensive some of the latest Range Rover models have gotten. Then again, they’re also completely loaded with equipment that includes large rear screens, a litany of off-roading features, an automatic parking system and a Meridian sound system with up to 29 speakers. This lightly used 2016 Range Rover LWB Autobiography is the ultimate example of the breed and the ultimate example of its price range: It’s available at Land Rover of San Antonio for an amazing $174,995. Find a 2016 Land Rover Range Rover for sale

  1. It’s an interesting list, but I think it’d be more interesting if you added some further constraints: 2+ years old and 2,000+ miles. While you set out with parameters of “used” to avoid limited edition new SUV’s, half of your list is effectively new limited edition SUV’s, that are only technically used.

Oh well, something to look forward to next year when you redo the article.
