This weekend, I measured the gas mileage in my Dodge Viper and received rather depressing results: Around town, it averages just 5.6 miles per gallon. And even when you're hypermiling on the highway, it doesn't top 18.6 mpg. So that got me thinking: what other cars get really awful mileage? And I mean truly horrible, terrible, ridiculously bad gas mileage? According to the EPA, it's these nine models that return the worst fuel economy of all 2016 vehicles.

12 MPG COMBINED

Chevrolet Express

Chevrolet Express 3500/GMC Savana 3500

The Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana hail from another era -- back when cargo vans were truck-based gas-guzzlers with few modern amenities and dull, indistinct designs. Although every other cargo van has been redesigned since the Express and Savana debuted, these models soldier on -- with top-level 3500 versions returning just 11 mpg in the city and 16 mpg on the highway, for a combined average of 12 mpg.

Ferrari F12tdf

Ferrari F12tdf

The Ferrari F12tdf is a track-focused, high-performance, limited-production version of the standard Ferrari F12. While the regular F12 boasts an amazing 731 horsepower, the tdf takes things even further -- offering 769 hp. But the extra performance comes with a gas mileage hit: While the F12 gets 12 mpg city/16 mpg hwy, the F12tdf boasts just 11 mpg city/15 mpg highway, for a combined average of 12 mpg. Not that most owners will mind, as the F12tdf starts well above $400,000 -- and it's all sold out.

Lamborghini Aventador

Lamborghini Aventador Roadster

Although the Lamborghini Aventador coupe's fuel economy numbers are pretty abysmal -- 11 mpg city and 18 mpg highway, for a combined 13 mpg -- it's the Roadster that brings things down to 12 mpg, likely owning to added weight and diminished aerodynamics. Of course, this should surprise no one: The Aventador Roadster (which starts at $425,000 before options) uses a 700-hp 6.5-liter V12, with absolutely zero attention paid to gas mileage. Interestingly, Lamborghini's other model -- the Huracan -- isn't so bad for an exotic, as it touts 14 mpg city/21 mpg hwy.

Mercedes-Benz G65 AMG

Mercedes-Benz G65 AMG

While the entire Mercedes-Benz G-Class lineup is tremendously thirsty, nothing could be worse than the G65 AMG. It returns 11 mpg city and an almost unbelievable 13 mpg highway; the highway figure is worse than any other vehicle on sale today. In fact, the G65 AMG almost makes the standard G550 -- at 13 mpg city/14 mpg hwy -- look efficient. So why is the G65 AMG specifically so bad? That would be the 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged V12, which makes 621 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque. It would also be the 6,250-pound curb weight, and the boxy shape that roughly resembles a filing cabinet.

13 MPG COMBINED

Ferrari FF

Ferrari FF

Although the Ferrari FF is, on paper, a mere 2-door hatchback, there's a lot more to it than that. For example: there's the complicated Ferrari all-wheel-drive system. There's also the relatively large interior and surprisingly large overall size -- which, at 193.2 inches, is deep into midsize-luxury-sedan territory. And then, of course, there's the engine: a 651-hp 6.3-liter V12 that doesn't think so much about optimizing fuel economy. The result? Eleven mpg city/17 hwy, for 13 mpg combined.

14 MPG COMBINED

Aston Martin V12 Vantage

Aston Martin V12 Vantage S

Despite the Aston Martin Vantage's relatively small size, V12-powered models use, well, a V12 -- one that makes a muscular 565 hp. The V12 Vantage also uses old-school technology, eschewing turbocharging and even the fairly common dual-clutch transmission. The result: 12 mpg city/18 mpg hwy, for 14 mpg combined. Like most of the cars on this list, however, the V12 Vantage's price tag -- $187,300 before options -- ensures most drivers probably won't care much about its gas mileage.

Bentley Mulsanne

Bentley Mulsanne

Anyone familiar with Bentley's flagship Mulsanne sedan won't be surprised to find it on this list. Weighing in at an almost unbelievable 5,919 pounds, the Mulsanne would likely be among the most inefficient cars on the market, regardless of its powertrain. But then you consider the engine: a 6.75-liter V8 that's twin turbocharged to make up to 530 hp and an unbelievable 811 lb-ft of torque -- more than virtually any other car you can buy today. In other words: It's easy to understand why the Mulsanne returns just 11 mpg city/18 mpg hwy, for a combined average of 14 mpg.

Mercedes-Benz GL63

Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG

The Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG is similar to the high-performance G65 AMG we've featured above, although it's considerably larger -- a function of its duties as a family hauler with 3-row seating. With that said, the GL63 is hardly a family hauler: While it may have three rows of seats, it's more like a performance car, producing 550 hp and 560 lb-ft of torque from its 5.5-liter turbocharged V8. So what do you get when you combine a 3-row SUV with a 550-hp turbocharged V8? That would be 13 mpg city/17 mpg hwy, for a total of 14 mpg in combined driving.

Rolls-Royce Phantom

Rolls-Royce Phantom

The Rolls-Royce Phantom is the largest sedan on the market, towering over sports cars with a 64.2-inch height -- a figure that means it's only 1.5 inches shorter than a Jaguar F-Pace crossover. The Phantom is also long, wide and packed with leather-lined features -- all of which adds up to a curb weight of 5,500 pounds and up, depending on what version you get and which options you choose. Also not working in the Phantom's favor from a fuel economy standpoint: It uses a 6.75-liter V12, which makes 454 hp and 531 lb-ft of torque. Overall gas mileage: 11 mpg city/19 mpg hwy, regardless of which one you choose.
