This art piece depicts a Volkswagen Golf crashing over the span of an entire month. I came across this yesterday when I was browsing the Internet, and it's undoubtedly one of the strangest things I've ever seen. Naturally, I watched it with great interest.

I know what you're thinking: What do I mean by "a Volkswagen Golf crashing over the span of an entire month?" You're thinking I mean some artist is taking a month to paint a Volkswagen Golf crash, or maybe there's some video showing a Volkswagen Golf crashing over and over again for a whole month. But neither of those things is what I mean. I mean what I said: This art piece depicts a Volkswagen Golf crashing over the span of an entire month.

Here are the details. Dubbed "Slow Motion Car Crash" by Jonathan Schipper, this month-long Volkswagen Golf crash/art installation took place in Europe in 2012. To create it, Schipper placed a Volkswagen Golf against a wall and rigged it to move at approximately 7 millimeters per hour, 24 hours a day, for a month. The car starts off just fine, and then, as you can watch in the above video -- that's week two -- the Golf slowly starts to become more and more crumpled. If you'd like to see more, as I did, here's week one, and here's week three.

Interestingly, this is not the only slow-motion car crash Schipper has orchestrated. Apparently, he's done the same thing several times -- most notably with a 1970s Chevy Camaro and a Pontiac Firebird, which folded like a road map. The Golf, meanwhile, stays fairly intact -- although that could be because its 7mm-per-hour top speed is far less than the combined 14mm-per-hour top speed of the Camaro and the Firebird, which just feels like wild recklessness by comparison.
