The SEMA aftermarket show in Las Vegas always seems to bring out the strangest, most bizarre, most unusual vehicles anyone could possibly fathom. And the king of the strangest vehicles this year is undoubtedly this: a 2,000-horsepower Toyota Land Cruiser that will go 220 miles per hour.
I never thought I’d be writing "Land Cruiser" and "220 miles per hour" in the same sentence, but here we are. See the 2016 Toyota Land Cruiser models for sale near you
Toyota has no real explanation for why this vehicle exists, except to say they wanted to make a Land Cruiser that goes really, really fast. I guess that’s reason enough. So what they did was they took the 5.7-liter V8 that powers the Land Cruiser and they added two "volleyball-sized Garrett turbochargers" under the hood. I put that in quotes because the press release actually says this. You know you’re at SEMA when a Toyota press release uses the term "volleyball-sized."
Toyota also did a few other things to this Land Cruiser: They lowered it, they changed the bodywork, they put on crazy wheels, and they (obviously) added a specialized transmission. But by far the most important takeaway is that this thing makes 2,000 hp and does 220 mph. The result: Toyota called it, fittingly, the Land Speed Cruiser.
"I love the challenge of taking a vehicle and making it stronger and faster," said Toyota’s motorsports technical manager, Chuck Wade, in the press release. "Making something beyond outrageous keeps me coming back for more."
Indeed, this thing is beyond outrageous. We hope to find it for sale, used, on Autotrader in a couple of years. Maybe then someone will even enhance those turbochargers to make them basketball-sized, or exercise-ball-size, or perhaps even adult-mule-deer-sized. One can dream.
