  • 2016 Chevrolet Volt shown at Consumer Electronics Show
  • All-new Volt sports a totally new look in front and a new wheel design
  • Latest Volt will be fully revealed later this month at the Detroit Auto Show

Chevrolet has officially given a preview of the updated version of its popular plug-in electric Volt hatchback at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. While Chevrolet is saving most details about the new Volt for the Detroit Auto Show later this month, the preview shows us much of what the next-generation model will look like.

So what exactly has changed? From the outside, it looks like quite a bit. In front, the fully redesigned hatchback boasts a completely new appearance with a more futuristic look than its predecessor had. Although the Volt's roofline remains about the same as last year's model and is highly streamlined for the best possible gas mileage, the wheel design is totally new. While we suspect that there are big updates in back, Chevrolet hasn't yet shown off the Volt's rear end.

Unfortunately, the full-frontal preview of the Volt is probably all Chevrolet will show us at this year's Consumer Electronics Show. A full unveiling is expected later this month at the Detroit Auto Show, when the automaker will show off the car's entire design and announce details about its powertrain.

For some industry observers and car shoppers, details about the Volt's upcoming powertrain are more important than getting a look at the car itself. Chevrolet is promising a longer battery life, better gasoline-engine fuel economy and improved electric range figures (compared to today's Environmental Protection Agency-rated 38 miles on a single charge) with the new model.

Check back for more information about the 2016 Chevrolet Volt. We'll have further updates from this year's Detroit Auto Show when the all-new model is finally revealed in full.

What it means to you: We're excited to see the all-new Chevrolet Volt in Detroit, but we're more excited to find out what's under the hood.
