It's been over 20 years since Buick has had one in the lineup, but the family wagon is gradually making a comeback, and it's not what you remember. Introducing the 2018 Buick Regal TourX It's different from every wagon of the past -- it's sleek, versatile and packed with modern conveniences. It's also a lot of fun to drive.

Simply put, think of the new TourX as a more luxurious version of the Subaru Outback or a more affordable version of the Audi allroad. Either way, we like what we see.

Outfitted with standard all-wheel drive and a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbo engine, the TourX comes in three distinct trim levels. We tested a fully loaded Essence model with the Entertainment, Comfort and Safety/Tech packages.

As first impressions go, the TourX is appealing and a little rugged, thanks to standard 18-inch wheels and an available roof rack.

Our tester's gray color was a little bit bland, but if you want something more dramatic, opt for the white or red exterior colors.

One of the great things about the Regal TourX is that it has a lot of the functionality of an SUV, like a big cargo area and a large hatchback door, but it's also not like an SUV in some pretty specific ways. The ride and handling are more like that of a premium sport sedan. It sits a little bit lower to the ground, but that means better handling. It has decent acceleration as well.

The TourX also corners well thanks to a low center of gravity, which you won't find with many crossovers and SUVs.

Another thing we like about this car is its turbocharged engine. It's not going to win any races, but it does have enough power to get through traffic pretty quickly.

And the standard all-wheel drive makes driving on snowy, icy or sandy roads a lot safer.

On the outside, you'll appreciate the wagon's lower roof and floor height, which makes loading large or heavy items a whole lot easier.

Inside, you'll find lots of clean lines and a straightforward design. The touchscreen is within reach, and all of the controls are easy to understand. Standard features include a back-up camera, smart key, push-button start and rear air vents (a must if you have kids or pets). Move up to the Preferred or Essence trims if you want more high-end comfort.

We also like how spacious and comfortable the TourX is. The split rear seats fold down flat with the touch of a button to reveal a cargo area that's as large and expansive as some SUVs … as much as 74 cu ft. That's one cubic foot more than a Subaru Outback. There's also a removable Bluetooth speaker and pickup truck-like rails with sturdy tie-downs.

Even with the second row in place, there's still plenty of room for all your luggage or the family pet. (Now if you do that, be sure to secure your pet properly to keep him or her safe.)

As for tech, you'll find Bluetooth and a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot, and wireless phone charging is available on the higher trim levels. There's also Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Furthermore, lots of safety features are offered, but most are optional.

Buick's new TourX crossover wagon is about as good as a moderately priced family car gets. It's good-looking, functional and fun. If you want a comfortable alternative to the SUVs that everybody else seems to be driving, but you don't want the luxury car price, the 2018 Buick Regal TourX is it.

People have a certain preconceived idea about Buicks, but if you haven't been shopping for a new car in quite a few years, take a look at the newer Buicks and see if you don't think they have a little bit more style and sophistication than they used to have. They're nice inside, and they have a nice, quiet, calm ride -- and that's exactly what these cars are aimed at.
