For the past several years, car enthusiasts have been shouting that Buick should give up. "They're just cars for old people!" the Internet-commentor rabble cried. "The midlevel luxury segment is dead!" That viewpoint is usually followed up by someone accurately pointing out that Buick is still killing it in China. Then people go on their way, while Buick continues to improve, and its influence has grown accordingly.

First off, Buick is really the only name in town that prioritizes comfort over sportiness. Virtually every other entry-level luxury option these days focuses more and more on the driving experience -- and while that's great for enthusiasts like us, Buick has been focusing on providing comfortable luxury at an affordable price. I had the chance to drive around the 2017 LaCrosse recently, and it seemed like a pretty great value for the money. The interior and exterior look fantastic, it was quiet and nice to drive, the seats were very comfortable, and it never left me wanting for power with its 310-horsepower V6. Even the base model, at $32,990, has a premium feel to it. I genuinely liked it.

Secondly, have you seen the photos of the 2018 Regal sedan and wagon? Buick released pictures of the 2018 Opel Insignia (the basis for the Regal),and it looks fantastic. The new Insignia is lighter than the old one, it has more room, and it's loaded with cool things like torque-vectoring all-wheel drive. They've even donned the Insignia with the Grand Sport name, a name historically reserved for high-performance Buick muscle cars. There's also going to be a wagon version, which has only been seen in spy photos, and it looks amazing.

I actually had the chance to do some real journalism with Buick's US vice president of marketing, Tony DiSalle, so I asked him if we could expect to see the Opel Insignia wagon as a Buick Regal wagon. He simply responded with a coy smile: "I am not at liberty to discuss that."

I don't know about you, but I'm pretty excited to see what Buick has up its sleeves. I think it's going to be great.
