I still remember when I was a wee lad of approximately 12 and the Ford F-150 Harley-Davidson Edition came out. It was lowered, and it had a lot of chrome, and it had orange trim, and it looked exactly how you'd expect a pickup to look if it was created to pay homage to Harley-Davidson. I didn't love the F-150 Harley-Davidson, but I remember it distinctly.

And for years it was a mainstay in the Ford F-Series lineup. They changed the paint scheme a couple of times in the early years, and then they added a Super Duty version of the Harley-Davidson Edition for the 2004 model year -- which lasted for quite a while and eventually included flame graphics. When the F-150 was redesigned soon after, so too was the Harley-Davidson model -- and the Harley-Davidson F-Series continued, apparently in both Super Duty and light-duty forms, until the 2012 model year.

And then it went away. And now it's gone.

So why did Ford can it?

I've stumbled across a couple of articles on this here Internet that suggest the reason for the departure of the Harley-Davidson models was quite simple: Ford wanted tout the luxury and style of its own Platinum and Limited models. This makes sense to me. It also makes sense that Ford probably wouldn't want another brand name on its trucks -- especially as Ford has been in a recent product renaissance that has seen increased sales and improving brand awareness.

But I love a good special edition, and I'm sad the Harley trucks no longer exist. Ford first announced the Harley F-150 way back in 1999 at Sturgis, the world-famous motorcycle rally in South Dakota, and it lasted for more than a decade -- with various paint schemes, and special wheels, and interior changes. Yes, sure, the King Ranch is cool, the Limited is luxurious, and the Platinum is eye-catching, but let's be honest: Nothing beats a special edition with flames and orange graphics.
