Last week, I told you that the Sultan of Brunei commissioned the very first Bentley SUVs -- manufactured long before the Bentayga, which virtually everyone else knows as the "very first Bentley SUV." After I did some research for that story, I started looking into more Sultan of Brunei cars -- and oh, boy, did I find some gems, including a bunch of Bentley station wagons.

Basically, the story of the Sultan of Brunei's collection is this: It appears that the Sultan and his brother Jefri used their country's massive oil riches to purchase many, many, many very expensive cars throughout the 1980s and 1990s. However, they weren't content with "normal" cars that could also be purchased by "normal" people -- so they also commissioned one-off vehicles, reportedly spending hundreds of millions of dollars with Ferrari, Bentley, Rolls-Royce, Aston Martin and possibly others.

Some of the one-off vehicles were quite interesting -- Aston Martins that look like nothing you've seen before. A Ferrari sedan and station wagon based on the 456. Mercedes-Benz S-Class station wagons. The Bentley SUVs. Other unusual Bentley coupes and convertibles. Several odd Ferrari models that looked like concept cars. And then there are the Bentley wagons. I have no idea why the Sultan wanted so many custom station wagons, but, well, I can only assume he must be a true car enthusiast.

To my knowledge, there are several types of "Sultan of Brunei" Bentley wagons -- but who knows? There could be many more nobody has ever seen. My favorite is the Bentley Java, the headline image of this story, which looks like sort of a "midsize Bentley" concept car. Apparently, the Sultan has wagon, coupe and convertible versions of this car. There are also wagons based on the Bentley Brooklands and Bentley Turbo R, some of which were made in yellow specifically for the Sultan's collection, which is known to contain many yellow vehicles. There may even be some Arnage wagons, but it's hard to say for sure, as some Arnage models were converted into station wagons by privateers after the fact.

I can't get enough of the Sultan's collection, and I love looking at these things. One of my greatest automotive hopes is that someday, some of these cars escape Brunei, and we can all get a closer look at what's undoubtedly the greatest run of coachbuilt vehicles in the last several decades.
