Toyota announced it will voluntarily recall 283,200 Toyota vehicles and 137,000 Lexus vehicles due to a potentially faulty crankshaft pulley on six-cylinder engines. The recall, which has not yet been initiated with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), involves nine models from 2004, 2005 & 2006.

The crankshaft pulley drives the power steering pump, alternator and air conditioner using one or more belts. Toyota says the inner and outer halves of the crankshaft pulley may separate or become misaligned due to inadequate adhesive. This may cause a belt to slip or jump off of the pulley, resulting in poor alternator function or loss of power steering.

Toyota has received no reports of accidents related to the problem.

The recall affects the following vehicles: 2004 Toyota Avalon; 2005 Toyota Camry, Highlander, Sienna and Solara; 2006 Toyota Highlander HV; 2004 and 2005 Lexus ES330 and RX330; 2006 Lexus RX400h.

Toyota will inspect recalled vehicles and replace the crankshaft pulley if necessary at no charge. Toyota plans to begin notifying customers in January, but recommends owners of recalled vehicles visit their dealer for an inspection if they hear abnormal sounds from the engine compartment.

While the recall notice is not yet available on the NHTSA's website safercar.gov, Toyota released a FAQ for owners and invites owners to call the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331 or Lexus Customer Satisfaction at 1-800-25 LEXUS or 1-800-255-3987.
