The all-new third-generation 2015 Honda Fit continues to offer crossoverlike roominess and utility in a small, fun-to-drive car that's great on gas and easy to maneuver and park. An all-new body structure delivers improved safety ratings. A longer wheelbase adds nearly 5 inches of rear legroom, but cargo space drops a bit to a still impressive 52.7 cu ft. with the rear "Magic Seat" folded flat. Because the gas tank is located under the front seats, the Magic Seat can be folded flat no matter where the front seats are positioned by using a handy lever that accomplishes the task in a single motion. With the passenger seat folded and the rear seat down, the tiny Fit can easily hold a 6-foot ladder, and even with the stretched wheelbase the Fit remains nimble and maneuverable, with a curb-to-curb turning circle of just 35.1 feet. A new direct-injected Earth Dreams 1.5-liter 4-cylinder boosts both power and fuel economy. Also new is a 7-inch color display audio system on the EX and EX-L Fits with an HDMI port, HondaLink, SMS text-message capability, Pandora connectivity, a multi-angle backup camera display and Honda's right-side LaneWatch system, plus the option of navigation with HD Radio and SiriusXM.

The Fit is a good used-car choice for first-time buyers or for anyone who appreciates a roomy, well-designed, well-engineered small car that's fun to drive, has top safety ratings and is economical to own.

What We Like

7-in touchscreen infotainment; fun-to-drive character; great outward visibility and maneuverability; outstanding interior roominess and versatility; good fuel economy; value for dollar

What We Don't

Hard-plastic door armrests, droning of CVT, reduced cargo space compared to previous model

Fuel Economy & Engine Specs

The 2015 Fit is powered by a new, more efficient direct-injected Earth Dreams 1.5-liter double-overhead-camshaft 4-cylinder with four valves per cylinder and Honda's i-VTEC+VTC (which stands for intelligent variable valve timing and lift and variable timing control) system. Output jumps 11 percent, to 130 hp, and torque rises to 114 lb-ft on regular unleaded fuel. Also new on LX and EX models is a 6-speed manual transmission; EX and EX-L models are available with a new continuously variable automatic transmission with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters for the option of simulated manually controlled sequential step shifts. Manual-transmission Fits are rated by the EPA at 29 miles per gallon in the city and 37 mpg on the hwy. LX models with the CVT automatic get a 33 mpg city/41 mpg hwy estimate, while EX and EX-L models receive a 32 mpg city/38 mpg hwy rating. All models are equipped with front-wheel drive.

Standard Features & Options

The 2015 Honda Fit is available in the LX, EX and EX-L trims.

The Fit LX comes standard with a 6-speed manual transmission, 15-in steel wheels, air conditioning, a tilt-telescopic steering wheel with audio controls, cruise control, remote keyless entry, a 4-speaker AM/FM/CD stereo with a 5-in color display, Bluetooth streaming and MP3/WMA playback, a USB port, a multi-angle backup camera, auto headlamps, a 60/40-split folding rear seat, cloth upholstery, a height-adjustable driver's seat, anti-lock brakes, VSA stability control, dual front- and side-impact airbags, overhead airbags, and power locks, windows and mirrors.

The Fit EX adds 16-in alloy wheels, a 6-speaker audio system with a 7-in touchscreen, SMS text-message function, an HDMI port, Pandora connectivity, Honda Link, a power moonroof, push-button start, fog lamps and Honda LaneWatch.

The Fit EX-L gains a standard CVT, leather seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, and heated front seats and mirrors. The EX-L with Navigation package adds satellite navigation with voice recognition, traffic alerts, HD Radio and SiriusXM.

Pricing

Interest in small cars has waned recently, with SUVs and crossovers like Honda's own Pilot, CR-V and the Fit-based HR-V taking sales honors. There isn't a huge supply of used Fits available, but those that are will sit on lots longer, and prices will moderate.

To get a good idea of the 2015 Fit's price range, investigate Kelley Blue Book used-car values at KBB.com. Also, search the Autotrader Classifieds to see what models are for sale in your area.

Recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued the following recalls for the 2015 Fit:

On sunroof-equipped Fits, the rear grab handle brackets may puncture the overhead airbags during deployment, increasing the injury risk in a crash.

On automatic-transmission Fits, incorrect software may cause damage to the transmission drive pulley shaft, leading to a sudden loss of propulsion or locked-up front wheels, increasing the crash risk.

Defective wires inside the sparkplug coils may overheat and stall the engine suddenly.

Incorrect front windshield pillar trim panel coverings may foul deployment of the overhead airbags, increasing the injury risk in a crash.

Recall repairs are required by law, even if the vehicle is out of warranty. Your dealer can check to see if the repairs were performed and, if not, will fix the car at no charge to you.

Safety Ratings & Warranties

NHTSA improved its rating of the 2015 Fit to five stars overall, with five stars each for frontal and side impacts and four for rollover performance.

IIHS gave the 2015 Fit Good ratings for moderate-overlap front and side impacts, roof strength and head-restraint and seat tests, and an Acceptable rating for small-overlap front impacts. The Fit was also a 2015 Top Safety Pick.

The American Honda Motor Company sold the 2015 Fit with a 3-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty and a 5-year/unlimited-distance corrosion-perforation warranty.

Honda certified pre-owned (CPO) vehicles must be younger than 6 years and have no more than 80,000 miles on the odometer. Every CPO Fit undergoes a 150-point inspection. Those that pass receive a 12-month/12,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, extending the basic new-car warranty to 48 months or 48,000 miles and powertrain coverage to 7 years or 100,000 miles from when the vehicle was first sold, whichever occurs first. A vehicle-history report is also included.

Other Cars to Consider

2015 Ford Fiesta -- Available as a 4-door sedan or 5-door hatchback, the Fiesta delivers mini-Aston Martin front styling, sporty handling, good fuel economy and the latest in infotainment and safety systems. Engine choices include a 120-hp 1.6-liter 4-cylinder, a 123-hp 1.0-liter 3-cylinder turbo economy model and a 197-hp 1.6-liter 4-cylinder turbo ST performance variant. Rear-seat room remains cramped, however, and the 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission is jerky.

2015 Toyota Yaris -- This subcompact receives a sportier front-end appearance for 2015 and is available as a 3- or 5-door hatchback. Toyota's entry-level car delivers the basics and is powered by a modest 106-hp 1.5-liter 4-cylinder teamed with a 4-speed automatic or a 5-speed manual transmission. The latter combination is rated at 30 mpg city/36 mpg hwy.

Autotrader's Advice

We like the Fit EX model because it comes with upgrades such as the 7-in color touchscreen infotainment system, the power moonroof, 16-in alloys and push-button start, plus it's available with a choice of the slick-shifting 6-speed manual or CVT automatic transmissions. Look for CPO or well-cared-for lower-mileage examples and get a Carfax car-history report. Make sure the 2015 Fit you're planning to buy has had any applicable safety recalls attended to by a certified Honda dealer.
