The 2015 Nissan Rogue continues with the aggressive styling that it adopted for 2014 and shares with the European Nissan X-TRAIL. Its longer footprint now accommodates an optional third-row seat with wider-opening rear doors for improved rear access. Both 5- and 7-passenger versions are available. The previous-generation Rogue that sold in 2012 and 2013, renamed Rogue Select, also remains in the lineup alongside the 2015 Rogue as a low-cost entry-level model.

The Rogue continues to be the best-selling Nissan crossover, blending compact-car efficiency and agility with SUV practicality and versatility. An all-independent suspension imparts a nimble, fun-to-drive feel to the Rogue, belying its generous 32 cu ft. of cargo room behind the second-row seat and 70 cu ft. with the rear seats folded down. Form-fitting Zero Gravity front seats provide all-day driving comfort. A 170-horsepower 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine provides more-than-ample acceleration, although the continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), the only one available, sometimes makes the Rogue's forward progress feel disconnected from the engine.

Both front- and all-wheel drive are available. Unique features include a standard cargo organizer and a fold-flat front passenger seat that allows owners to stow ladders and lumber up to 8 feet long inside the vehicle with the rear hatch closed. Available safety technology includes blind spot monitoring system, lane-departure warning, forward-collision warning and moving-object detection. For 2015, SiriusXM satellite radio and NissanConnect Apps for smartphones are standard across the board as is a fuel-saving, driver-selectable Eco mode for the automatic transmission. Heated cloth seats are a new option for SV models.

The Nissan Rogue is a smart buy for young families looking for a versatile compact crossover that will fit in the garage and won't strain the fuel budget. Standard safety gear includes stability and traction control, dual front airbags, front-seat side airbags, overhead airbags and anti-lock 4-wheel disc brakes.

What We Like

Standard SiriusXM; optional third-row seat; Around View Monitor; compliant ride quality; Zero Gravity front seats; fold-down front passenger seat for carrying long items

What We Don't

No power front passenger seat; engine drones under acceleration with CVT automatic; limited rearward visibility; third-row space tight for adults

Fuel Economy & Engine Specs

The 2015 Rogue features a 2.5-liter double-overhead-camshaft 16-valve 4-cylinder engine, developing an ample-for-the-class 170 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. It burns regular unleaded gas and has a much-improved Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rating of 26 miles per gallon in the city and 33 mpg on the highway with standard front-wheel drive and a 25 mpg city/32 mpg hwy rating with optional all-wheel drive. The Nissan XTRONIC CVT automatic is standard and adds a driver-selectable Eco mode for improved fuel economy.

Standard Features & Options

The 2015 Rogue is available in three trims: the S, SV and SL.

The Rogue S offers standard cloth seats, air conditioning, a trip computer, a 4-speaker AM/FM/CD stereo with a 5-inch display, SiriusXM satellite radio, NissanConnect apps for Facebook, Pandora and iHeart Radio, a USB port, iPod connectivity, Bluetooth audio streaming, phone connectivity, hands-free text messaging, a tilt-telescopic steering wheel with remote audio controls, a backup camera, illuminated vanity mirrors, remote keyless entry, cruise control, variable intermittent wipers, a cargo organizer, stability and traction control, anti-lock brakes, 17-in steel wheels with hubcaps, a fold-flat front passenger seat, a split-folding rear seat and power windows, mirrors and door locks. The optional Family package adds a third-row seat, privacy glass and run-flat tires (instead of a spare tire).

The Rogue SV brings standard 17-in alloy wheels, a power driver's seat with adjustable lumbar support, upgraded cloth seats, rear privacy glass, dual-zone automatic climate control, auto headlamps, push-button starting, roof rails and a 6-speaker stereo with a 5-in color display. SV options include heated cloth seats, a panoramic sunroof, a third-row seat, run-flat tires and a Premium package with a 7-in color touchscreen, navigation, a 360-degree Around View Monitor, NavTraffic, NavWeather, Travel Link, Google Places, a power lift gate, a blind spot monitoring system, lane-departure warning and moving-object detection.

The SL includes the Around View Monitor, 18-in alloy wheels, heated side mirrors, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, a power lift gate, fog lamps, leather seating, heated front seats, a Bose 9-speaker premium audio system and navigation with NavTraffic and NavWeather. An SL Premium package adds a panoramic sunroof, LED headlamps, forward-collision warning, a blind spot monitoring system, lane-departure warning and moving-object detection.

Pricing

The Rogue continues to be Nissan's best-selling crossover SUV, and along with the Ford Escape, the Honda CR-V and the Toyota RAV4, it's been ranked among the top-selling compact crossovers for several years, so you can expect Nissan dealers to have a good supply of clean examples to choose from.

Recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the following recalls for the 2015 Nissan Rogue:

The shifter may be able to be moved out of Park without depressing the brake pedal, allowing an unattended vehicle to roll away, increasing the risk of a crash.

The front-passenger airbag may not deploy as intended in a crash due to incorrect sensing, increasing injury risk.

A corroded lift-gate support stay may break off, allowing an open lift gate to slam closed, increasing injury risk.

The driver's side front and rear doors may not fully latch, allowing the doors to open while the vehicle is moving and increasing the injury risk to unbelted passengers.

Loose front-wheel hub fasteners may cause the brake caliper to separate from the front axle, affecting steering and braking and increasing crash risk.

Some Rogue Select vehicles with 17-in wheels have incorrect wheel and tire size labels for load-carrying capacity.

Recall repairs are required by law, even if the vehicle is out of warranty. Your dealer can check to see if the repairs were performed, and if not, they'll fix the car for free.

Safety Ratings & Warranties

NHTSA gave the 2015 Nissan Rogue a 4-star overall rating, with four stars for front-impact protection, five stars for side-impact protection and four for rollover resistance.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named the 2015 Rogue a 2015 IIHS Top Safety Pick and gave it a Good rating for moderate- and driver-side small-overlap front impacts, side impacts, roof strength, head-restraint and seat crash performance. The carryover 2015 Rogue Select received a Good rating for moderate-overlap front impacts, side impacts, head restraints and seats, an Acceptable score for roof strength and a Marginal rating for small-overlap front impacts.

The 2015 Rogue carries a 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty, a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty and a 5-year/unlimited-mile corrosion-perforation warranty.

Nissan certified pre-owned (CPO) cars can't have more than 80,000 miles on the odometer and must be under 6 years old. Every CPO Rogue undergoes a 150-point inspection and gets a Carfax report. The Nissan CPO warranty extends the original powertrain warranty to 7 years/100,000 miles and includes 24-hour roadside assistance.

Other Cars to Consider

2015 Toyota RAV4 -- The RAV4 seats only five but offers an impressive 73.4 cu ft. of cargo space with the rear seat folded. Power comes via a 176-hp 2.5-liter 4-cylinder and a 6-speed automatic. A backup camera is standard. EPA estimates are 23 mpg city/30 mpg hwy with front-wheel drive and 22 mpg city/28 mpg hwy with all-wheel drive. New for 2014 is an optional power liftgate with programmable height settings.

2015 Honda CR-V -- The top-selling compact gets refreshed styling for 2015 as well as a more fuel-efficient direct-injected 2.4-liter 4-cylinder with increased torque, a continuously variable automatic transmission and new safety systems such as lane-keep assist and forward-collision alert. EPA fuel economy estimates rise appreciably to 27 mpg city/33 mpg hwy with front-wheel drive and 26 mpg city/32 mpg hwy with all-wheel drive. Bluetooth for audio and phone is standard. Cargo room is 35.2 cu ft. with the rear seat up and 70.9 cu ft. with it folded down.

Autotrader's Advice

The 2015 Rogue is surprisingly roomy, and it's available with an optional third-row seat. It's also a fun-to-drive compact crossover in a class not known for excitement. We think the Rogue SV offers the best value with its wealth of standard equipment. The CVT takes some getting used to the first time you drive the Rogue because of the disconnected feel between the engine and road speed, which is normal and nothing to worry about.

Go for a CPO vehicle when possible, and make sure the Rogue you're thinking of buying has seen care and maintenance. Also, check with the dealer to verify that the 2015 Rogue you're considering has had its many safety-recall repairs performed.
