ADDITIONAL MODEL INFORMATION

author photo by Ron Sessions August 2017

The 2015 Toyota Camry received a major facelift that gave it a more aggressive-looking front appearance, a wider stance and a more sculpted profile, adding almost two inches of overall length in the process. Toyota engineers worked to stiffen the body and sharpen handling while increasing sound-absorption measures to quiet the interior. For 2015, a backup camera is standard on all models and LED headlamps are available. A new XSE model is added for 2015, blending the sporty styling and firmer ride of the SE model with the luxury features of the XLE. The Camry 4-door midsize sedan was the top-selling car in the U.S. in 2015. Continued for 2015 is the gas-electric Camry Hybrid with an estimated EPA fuel economy rating of 43 miles per gallon in the city.

The 2015 Toyota Camry is a great choice for anyone looking for a roomy, reliable and fuel-efficient sedan that will deliver years of worry-free service and keep its value at trade-in time.

What We Like

Quiet cabin; good ride quality; spacious interior; 10 standard airbags; powerful V6; 4-cylinder engine; hybrid fuel economy; available blind spot monitoring system

What We Don't

Overstated front grille; low grip with standard tires; limited trunk space in hybrid

Fuel Economy & Engine Specs

All Camry models are equipped with front-wheel drive; all-wheel drive is not available.

The 2015 Camry has two different engine options. The Camry LE, SE, XSE and XLE are equipped with a 2.5-liter double-overhead-camshaft (DOHC) 16-valve 4-cylinder engine. Output is a healthy 178 horsepower, and it develops 170 lb-ft of torque. It burns regular unleaded gas and has an EPA rating of 25 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway with the standard 6-speed automatic transmission.

The Camry XSE V6 and XLE V6 are powered by a 3.5-liter DOHC 24-valve V6, which produces a stirring 268 hp and 248 lb-ft of torque. It, too, runs on regular unleaded and is EPA-rated at 21 mpg city/31 mpg hwy with the standard 6-speed automatic.

The Camry Hybrid mates the 156-hp 2.5-liter 4-cylinder and a 141-hp electric motor to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). Total system power is 200 hp. The hybrid alternates relatively seamlessly between gas and electric modes, blending power sources for a smooth power flow. The electric system is fed by a nickel-metal-hydride battery. LE Hybrid models with 16-inch tires are EPA-rated at 43 mpg city/39 mpg hwy, while SE and XLE Hybrids with 17-in tires net a 40 mpg city/38 mpg hwy EPA rating.

Standard Features & Options

The 2015 Camry is available in LE, SE, XSE, XLE, XSE V6 and XLE V6 trims.

The Camry LE comes with standard air conditioning, an Entune 6-speaker AM/FM/CD/MP3/WMA stereo with iPod/USB jacks and a 6.1-in touchscreen, Bluetooth streaming, voice-recognition and hands-free connectivity, a backup camera, cloth seats, a power driver's seat, a split-folding rear seat, intermittent wipers, a tilt-telescopic steering wheel with audio controls, cruise control, automatic head lamps, keyless entry, 16-in steel wheels, stability and traction control, anti-lock 4-wheel disc brakes, power windows, door locks and heated mirrors. LE options include a power moonroof, HD Radio and SiriusXM. There is also an LE version of the Camry Hybrid.

Next on the Camry model ladder is the sporty SE. Standard fare includes a sport suspension, fog lamps, a sport mesh grille, a rear spoiler, chrome exhaust tips, sport seats with power lumbar support, Optitron electronic gauges, 17-in alloy wheels, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gearshift and steering-wheel paddle shifters. Navigation, SmartKey with push-button start and a HomeLink garage-door opener are SE options. New for 2015 is an SE version of the Camry Hybrid.

The new XSE model gains leather and suede sport seats, dual-zone automatic air conditioning and Entune Plus with HD Radio and SiriusXM. XSE V6 models add the 268-hp V6, a 7-in touchscreen with navigation, a power moonroof, LED head lamps, Qi wireless device charging, auto-dimming mirrors and 18-in alloy wheels.

The most luxurious Camry is the XLE. It comes with dual-zone automatic air conditioning, a power moonroof, a premium touchscreen audio system, power front seats, woodgrain interior trim, leather seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, rear-seat climate control vents, fabric door trim and LED head lamps. XLE V6 models bring the 268-hp V6, a 7-in touchscreen with navigation, SiriusXM radio, HD Radio, heated front seats, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a compass and a HomeLink garage-door opener. There is also an XLE version of the Camry Hybrid.

Optional on XSE and XLE are blind spot and rear cross-traffic monitoring systems, and an advanced technology package with pre-collision, lane-departure warning, automatic high-beam control and dynamic cruise control.

Pricing

Toyotas have a great reliability reputation from both word of mouth and the various quality-rating organizations. Therefore, clean, low-mileage models retain their resale value and command higher used-car prices. Moderating that somewhat is the fact that the Camry has been one of the best-selling cars in the U.S. in recent years, so there should be a good supply of used vehicles.

Recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced the following recall for the 2015 Camry:

A damaged electronic control module may cause an unexpected loss of boost to the electric power steering system, increasing steering effort and the risk of a crash.

Recall repairs are required by law, even if the vehicle is out of warranty. Your dealer can check to see if the repairs were performed and, if not, will fix the car for free.

Safety Ratings & Warranties

The 2015 Toyota Camry received a NHTSA 5-star rating overall, with a 4-star rating for frontal impacts, a 5-star rating for side impacts and a 4-star rating for rollovers.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 2015 Camry a Good rating for small- and moderate-overlap front impacts, side impacts, roof strength, head restraint and seat crash performance. It was named a 2015 IIHS Top Safety Pick+.

Toyota covered the 2015 Camry with a 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty, a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty and a 5-year/unlimited-mile corrosion-perforation warranty. Additionally, routine maintenance and roadside assistance were covered for a 2-year/25,000-mile period.

Toyota certified pre-owned (CPO) cars can't have more than 85,000 miles on the odometer and must be 6 years old or younger. Every CPO Camry undergoes a 160-point inspection and gets a Carfax report. The Toyota CPO warranty covers the whole car, bumper to bumper, for 1 year or 12,000 miles, extends the original powertrain warranty to 7 years/100,000 miles, and includes 1 year of roadside assistance.

Other Cars to Consider

2015 Honda Accord -- The 2015 Honda Accord is available as a roomy sedan or a stylish coupe, both fun to drive. The 278-hp 3.5-liter V6 adds zippy performance, but the base 2.4-liter 4-cylinder's 185 hp provides ample acceleration and is EPA rated at 27 mpg city/35 mpg hwy with the CVT. A hybrid version of the sedan is EPA rated at 49 mpg city/45 mpg hwy.

2015 Chevrolet Malibu -- The midsize Malibu sedan is a bit shy on rear-seat legroom but offers a generous 16.3-cu ft. trunk. New for 2015 is standard OnStar 4G LTE with a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot for cabin occupants. Powertrain offerings include a peppy 259-hp 2.0-liter turbo 4-cylinder and a thrifty 196-hp 2.5-liter 4-cylinder with stop-start technology that's EPA rated at 25 mpg city/36 mpg hwy -- both teamed with a 6-speed automatic.

Autotrader's Advice

With a solid reputation for durability and reliability, it's pretty hard to go wrong with a Camry. With that being said, we'd recommend the nonhybrid 4-cylinder version, which is also the choice of nearly four out of every five new Camry buyers. Toyota has built millions of hybrids, but these are complex machines with a lot of electronic components. Eventually, normal wear and tear will result in necessary specialized diagnoses and repair that will likely exceed the costs associated with conventional models. Ideally, you'll want to look for a Toyota certified pre-owned car. Regardless of your Camry choice, make sure the car you're looking at has had any applicable safety recalls performed.
