After a thorough makeover last year, the 2018 Infiniti Q60 coupe returns with only a few minor changes. After all, why mess with a good thing, right? From its stunning design to its snug cockpit, the Q60 is the rightful heir to the first G35 coupe that helped elevate Infiniti to world-class brand.

Now, you might be wondering: With the meteoric rise in SUV sales, why spend so much time and money building a coupe? Infiniti will be the first to admit that performance coupes are nonessential vehicles targeted at emotional, rather than practical, buying impulses. Nobody needs a coupe, but enough buyers want a 2-door car with many of the attributes of a sports car and enough comfort, convenience and respectability to earn a spot in well-heeled driveways.

What's New for 2018?

For 2018, the Q60 carries over with a new naming scheme and a new exterior color: Solar Mica.

What We Like

Gorgeous exterior design; elegant, sporty interior design; robust performance with 300- and 400-horsepower V6 engines; wide range of performance personalizations

What We Don't

Access to rear seats is tough; no manual transmission available for enthusiasts; Direct Adaptive Steering still a little remote

How Much?

$39,945-$58,000

Fuel Economy

With the 2.0-liter turbo 4-cylinder engine and rear-wheel drive, the Q60 2.0t is rated to get 22 miles per gallon in the city, 30 mpg on the highway and 25 mpg combined. All-wheel-drive (AWD) 2.0t models get 21 mpg city/28 mpg hwy/24 mpg combined. The Q60 3.0t rear-wheel drive (RWD) comes with a 300-hp 3.0-liter turbo V6 and is rated at 19 mpg city/28 mpg hwy/22 mpg combined, while the AWD version comes in at 19 mpg city/27 mpg hwy/22 mpg combined. The Q60 3.0t Red Sport 400 wrings 400 hp out of its 3.0-liter turbo V6, and can achieve 20 mpg city/27 mpg hwy/22 mpg combined. Add all-wheel drive, and fuel economy slumps a little to 19 mpg city/26 mpg hwy/21 mpg combined.

Standard Features & Options

The Q60 2.0t PURE (starting at $39,945) is the base model, defined by its 2.0-liter turbocharged inline 4-cylinder engine, 7-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. The Q60 2.0t LUXE AWD (starting at $44,295) comes with the same list of features and options as the 2.0t LUXE and adds all-wheel drive.

The Q60 3.0t LUXE (starting at $45,295) includes all of the features of the 2.0t PURE and has the same available options, but substitutes a 300-hp 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine in place of the 4-cylinder. Additional option packages for the 3.0t LUXE include the Dark Maple Wood Accent package ($2,250), and the ProActive package ($2,850), which includes auto-leveling adaptive front lighting and high-beam assist, adaptive radar cruise control, adaptive steering, distance-control assist, an Eco pedal, an advanced climate control system, front-seat pre-crash seat belts, blind spot monitoring, and lane-departure warning and prevention with active lane control.

The Q60 3.0t Sport ($49,295) includes all the features of the 3.0t LUXE plus 19-in sport wheels, sport brakes, Dynamic Digital Suspension, semi-aniline leather appointed sport seats, carbon fiber trim, power tilt-telescopic steering, memory setting for the driver's seat, steering wheel and mirror plus auto-dimming outside mirrors.

The Q60 3.0t Sport AWD ($51,295) adds all-wheel drive.

The Q60 Red Sport 400 (starting at $52,295) piles on to the standard 3.0t LUXE list of features with new exhaust tips, red-painted brake calipers, unique 19-in alloy wheels, red S badges, a dynamic digital suspension, paddle shifters, leather seats, carbon-fiber interior trim, sport brakes, a power tilt-telescopic steering wheel with memory and, of course, a 400-hp version of the 3.0-liter V6 turbo. In addition to the options packages available on the 3.0t LUXE, a no-charge option of silver optic-fiber interior trim is also available.

The Q60 Red Sport 400 AWD (starting at $54,295) includes all of the Red Sport 400's features and adds all-wheel drive, and can be built with the same list of options.

Safety

All Q60 models come with six airbags, LATCH connectors for child safety seats, brake assist, anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution, advanced vehicle dynamic control and traction control, tire-pressure monitoring and an emergency inside trunk release.

Optional safety features include backup-collision intervention, blind spot monitoring, predictive forward-collision warning, forward emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind spot intervention, lane-departure warning and lane-departure intervention with active lane control and front-seat pre-crash seat belts.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have not yet released ratings for the 2018 Q60.

Behind the Wheel

We spent our time shuttling between 3.0t LUXE and Red Sport 400 models during our time with the Q60, as the base 2.0t was not made available at the time of our test. The test vehicles were heavily optioned, which gave us a chance to experience the leather seats, premium Bose sound system, moonroof and other premium features.

Infiniti made an interesting choice with the center stack and driver interface by placing a 7-in touchscreen control directly below the 8-in navigation screen and replacing many of the buttons and knobs that provided broad functionality with screen inputs. The resulting clean, relatively uncomplicated interface rewards you with simple operation once you've invested some time setting it up and familiarizing yourself with it.

The difference between the two power plants on the road appears both off the line and when accelerating at higher speeds. The 400-hp Red Sport models have forceful thrust, but the power is easily managed with the throttle pedal. The 300-hp 3.0t is no slouch either, with sufficient power but without that added boost that throws you back in your seat. Turbo lag is nearly nonexistent, as the 7-speed automatic transmission is geared to deliver smooth shifts and transitions.

The Q60's multiple by-wire interfaces -- steering, throttle, transmission -- and available electronic suspension control all collaborate to deliver a surprisingly immediate, connected driving experience. We sometimes wished for a more natural feel with the steering system, but appreciated the improvement over the previous generation's numbness. As demanded from a premium coupe, the Q60's cabin is whisper-quiet on the road, with just enough of the V6's voice in the background under hard charging.

Other Cars to Consider

2018 BMW 4 Series -- The Ultimate Driving Machine still represents the target for premium performance coupes.

2018 Cadillac ATS -- Cadillac is back, and the ATS is one of the best vehicles in its lineup. This well-balanced coupe impresses on the road.

2018 Audi A5 -- Audi's reputation for interior and exterior design is on full display in the A5, with an impressive level of available tech.

Used Porsche Cayman -- 2012-2016 Porsche Cayman offers superior performance with equal amounts of luxury and style.

Autotrader's Advice

Infiniti is right: Nobody needs a coupe, but everybody dreams of owning one. The 2018 Infiniti Q60 will inspire a lot of fantasies, and the reality of owning one could be equally inspiring. The 400-hp Red Sport models offer fulfillment, but your rational side will be satisfied with one of the 300-hp 3.0t models. Splurge on all-wheel drive if you live in a northern climate, or enjoy the savings and handling of rear-wheel drive if you don't have to fight snow and slush come winter.
