I recently had the opportunity to spend a couple days getting to know the 2018 Toyota Prius Prime Plug-In Hybrid. At first, I thought the exterior styling was a bit polarizing, but after a while, it grows on you.

The interior features a large 11.6-inch screen that I have a love/hate relationship with. It's great in that it's easy to read, but the graphics aren't that great on the navigation and feel a bit dated. Also, adjusting the HVAC controls on the screen is a bit of a chore, since the areas to touch are so small. Same goes for adjusting XM stations. The seats are quite comfy, but materials look cheap. Up front, I felt like I had plenty of leg and shoulder room. Backseat room was adequate but may be tight for those over six feet. Also, headroom for the taller crowd may be compromised due to the sloping roofline. The storage area behind the rear seat is practically nonexistent.

A full charge was good for 28 to 29 miles of electric power. This was just enough power for my commute to work or back home with power to spare for running errands. I'm less than 20 miles from work, so I wasn't too worried about losing battery power. Good thing there's plenty of gas in the tank just in case. I did notice that driving 70 mph on the interstate would deplete the battery considerably faster, especially if the A/C was running. I was surprised by the amount of power the car has. Even with only 121 horsepower, the car has plenty of pickup and never felt underpowered.

At $34,913, our 2018 Toyota Prius Prime Plug-In Advanced came with standard features, such as a heated steering wheel, a color head-up display, blind spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control. Other standard amenities include lane-departure warning and a self-parking system. Overall, I like the Prius Prime but don't see it as anything other than a glorified commuter car.
