  • Built on a whole new platform.
  • At last, a turbo engine option.
  • On sale fall 2019.

The 2020 Subaru Legacy midsize sedan (which recently made its debut at the Chicago Auto Show) is based on an essentially new platform. Which means that this fresh generation (the seventh) is safer, quieter, more refined and more spacious than the outgoing Legacy.

How So?

The new shell is much stiffer, thanks to using more ultra-high-tensile-strength steel. This brings benefits in safety, but also allows the suspension engineers to tune the chassis to a finer degree, enabling improvements in handling, ride quality and steering response. It also helps reduce noise, vibration and harshness.

Space-wise, the new Legacy has more shoulder and hip room, plus extra rear legroom compared with the 2019 car. Trunk space is virtually the same, at 15.1 cu ft., but it will take four roller bags.

Expand on the Safety Aspect

Subaru expects the 2020 Legacy to earn maximum scores in crash tests. Contributing to this confidence is the inclusion of the company's EyeSight array of driver aids like forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist. This is standard throughout the range.

In the top trim, there's also a Front View Monitor that shows a 180-degree view and fills in any blind spots created by the pillars on either side of the windshield.

What Other New Technologies Are Available?

Starting at the trim level that's one up from base, the Legacy deploys a tablet-like 11.6-in high-definition infotainment display. It will also be the first time that a Legacy sedan offers Wi-Fi through a high-speed LTE connection. Other available features include smartphone integration, remote start, steering-responsive LED headlights and a Harman Kardon 12-speaker audio system upgrade.

What's Under the Hood?

The 2020 Legacy range kicks off with a 2.5-liter flat four (aka boxer, which is Subaru's usual configuration) engine making 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque. Fuel consumption is estimated at 27 miles per gallon in the city and 35 mpg on the highway.

Higher up the totem is a turbocharged 2.4-liter flat-4 making 260 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque. This unit is expected to achieve 24 mpg city and 32 mpg highway.

Both engines are linked to a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and, typically for Subaru, all-wheel drive is standard. That could be the biggest selling point right there, because mainstream midsize sedans with AWD are rare.

When Is It Available and Now Much Will It Cost?

The 2020 Subaru Legacy goes on sale this fall, with pricing announced nearer the time. Trim levels will be base, Premium, Sport, Limited, Limited XT and Touring XT. XT models have the more powerful engine. The outgoing 2019 Legacy starts in the region of $23,500.
