  • The Land Cruiser name was first used in 1954.
  • That marks 65 years of all-terrain conquest.
  • The Heritage Edition loses its cool(box).

The 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage Edition celebrates six decades of off-roading brilliance. In case anyone has been living under a rock, a Land Cruiser has probably driven over it, on its way to becoming an icon throughout the world. During these 60 years or so, the Land Cruiser has gone from being a sparse, small homage to the Willys Jeep to a large luxury SUV, yet always with impressive abilities.

What's Going on With the Exterior?

This Heritage Edition, unveiled at the 2019 Chicago Auto Show, comes with an old-style "Toyota Land Cruiser" badge at the base of its rear pillar as a nod to its glorious pedigree. Exterior paint choices are Midnight Black Metallic or Blizzard Pearl (white). Either way, this model has a black-accented grille and 18-in BBS alloy wheels with a bronze finish. BBS, incidentally, makes high-quality wheels for the aftermarket and motorsport, with designs that have become iconic in themselves.

The headlights are shaded and dark chrome details add some extra attitude. By deleting the running boards and lower body side moldings, the Heritage Edition looks ready for adventure. Skid plates protect components like the front suspension, the fuel tank, the radiator and the transfer case.

What's Happening on the Inside?

The bronze theme migrates into the cabin in the form of contrast stitching set into the black leather upholstery that also covers the steering wheel and center console. The Land Cruiser, in its regular form, comes with virtually everything, such as quad-zone automatic climate control, heated/ventilated front seats, driver aids and advanced safety features, wireless charging, a 14-speaker JBL audio system, navigation, a powered moonroof, a heated steering wheel and a power-adjustable steering column. The main difference with the Heritage Edition is that it (inexplicably) doesn't have a cool box under the armrests between the front seats.

What About the Hardware?

The Land Cruiser employs a 5.7-liter V8 that generates 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque. This is linked to an 8-speed automatic transmission that has a 2-speed transfer case and a locking center differential for the standard full-time all-wheel drive system. This is enhanced by a multi-terrain response system, "Crawl" control (think of it as a low-speed cruise control for off-roading), hydraulically adjustable anti-roll bars and a Multi-Terrain Monitor that helps drivers negotiate tricky situations. This same array is found in the 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage Edition.

When Is It Available and How Much Will It Cost?

The 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage Edition goes on sale later this summer. Pricing will be announced nearer the time. For a ballpark figure, the 2019 Toyota Land Cruiser starts at around $86,000. The 2020 Heritage Edition will be a limited run of 1,200 units.
