Spring is a great time for moms looking for deals on new vehicles. Automakers are still pushing their spring sales, but many of these offers expire very soon and several companies have recently raised prices.

Let’s start with the traditional family hauler, the minivan, and then move on to other vehicle segments that also offer ample seating, cargo room, fuel efficiency, safety and value.

 2011 Chrysler Town & Country

With the base model starting at an MSRP of $30,160, the seven-passenger 2011 Town and Country minivan is the priciest on the market. But Chrysler invented this segment and the latest model offers lots of standard comfort and safety features. The standard V6 is rated at 25 mpg highway and 17 city. Chrysler is offering $750 customer cash and $750 bonus cash, ending May 31. Returning owners can get $1,000 loyalty cash until August 3, but that can’t be combined with the smaller bonus cash offer. Moms who prefer to lease can grab a $319 monthly payment for 36 months, with $1,989 due at signing, with bonus lease cash of $2,000. That deal ends May 3.

2011 Honda Odyssey

The Odyssey, redone for the current model year, offers seating for eight in three rows and a multitude of drop-and-fold seat possibilities with lots of flexibility. The base LX model starts at $27,800. The Odyssey comes with a standard, V6 engine and five-speed automatic transmission that is rated 19 mpg in the city and 28 highway. This minivan offers an eye-popping 15 beverage holders, two more than the Chrysler. Kelley Blue Book called this fourth-generation minivan “the gold standard” in the segment and second on its Top 10 Family Cars of 2011, behind the Chevrolet Suburban.

Honda is offering a $380-per-month lease for 36 months with zero down due at signing and the first month free for well-qualified customers. There’s also a $319 monthly lease for three years with $1,999 due at signing and no security deposit. Both offers expire May 2.

2011 Toyota Sienna

The third-generation Sienna minivan is the first, all-new minivan from Toyota in seven years. The base model comes with a four-cylinder engine and an MSRP of $24,560. The EPA mileage rating is at 19 city and 24 highway. Toyota is still offering 0% financing in select regions and even $1,000 in bonus cash in other areas, but 2.9% financing for three years on the V6 LE model is the main deal. All purchases come with Toyota Care, a free, maintenance plan for two years that covers routine items such as oil changes and tire rotations, plus 24-hour roadside assistance.

2011 Kia Sorento

The second generation Sorento is a crossover, a shift from its original body-on-frame SUV. With a base MSRP of $20,995, Sorento offers good value without sacrificing comfort features, and is the least expensive seven-seater in its class. The four-cylinder base model is rated at 20 mpg in the city and 27 highway.

The 2011 Sorento ranked seventh in Kelley Blue Book’s 10 Best Family Cars this year. Kia is offering $1,000 cash back and $1,000 bonus cash through May 2 on the six-cylinder LX model, which has an MSRP of $22,595. A $1,500 lease bonus is available on the base model.

2011 Chevrolet Equinox

The base Equinox LS crossover model carries an MSRP of $22,995 600 and the standard, in-line, four-cylinder engine is rated at 22 mpg in the city and 32 highway. The government’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration awarded the five-seat crossover its top 5 star rating for side crash protection, and four stars in its frontal crash and rollover tests.

The nation-wide deals include $1,000 cash back and $200 bonus cash for down payment assistance to buyers using GM/ALLY. There’s 2.9% financing for 3 years, but check with dealers in your area, as there are some offering $217-per-month leases. The deals expire May 2.

2012 Mazda5

Redesigned for the 2011 model year, the Mazda5 is for moms who prefer sporty handling and looks with minivan functionality. Although this Mazda is smaller than other minivans, it has three rows and seating for up to six passengers.

The base Sport model comes with an in-line, four-cylinder, six-speed manual transmission with an MSRP of $19,990. The four and six-cylinder versions, as well as the manual and automatics are rated 21 city and 28 highway. Six air bags are standard, including side curtains for all three rows.

The deals include dealer cash of up to $500; $267-per-month leases and 1.9% financing for three years. All end May 2.

2011 Subaru Forester

Subaru has been one of the industry’s hottest brands in the past few years. The five-seat Forester with a four-cylinder engine and manual transmission starts at $20,495. All models come with Subaru’s standard all-wheel drive and have received the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) Top Safety Pick award in all three of its crash tests. The 2011 model is also ranked by ALG as the best in the compact utility vehicle segment for predicted resale value.

Both the automatic and manual versions of the Forester are rated at 21 mpg in the city and 27 highway.

Monthly $229 leases for 42 months are available through May 2, with $1,029 due at signing and no security deposit. There’s also 1.9% financing available through May 2, pending credit approval.

2011 Ford Escape

The two rows of the Ford Escape compact crossover seat five people. The base XLS model is equipped with a four-cylinder engine, 5-speed manual transmission with an MSRP of $21,995, rated at 20 mpg in the city and 26 on the highway. The base six-speed automatic starts at $22,965.

The Escape, with good room for kids and cargo, has received the top safety rating from the IIHS in front, side and rear collisions. Side curtain airbags are standard.

Ford is offering $500 cash incentives, plus $1,000 bonus cash, expiring May 2. Returning lessees can get a $209-monthly payment for two years, with $2,237 due at signing.

2011 Hyundai Elantra Touring

Hyundai’s Elantra Touring wagon offers a nice alternative to minivans for moms at an affordable price. The model is one of Kelley Blue Book’s Top 10 Coolest Cars Under $18,000 for the current model year.

This compact hauler offers good cargo space and standard features like eight airbags. The sticker price on the four-cylinder base model is $15,995, with mileage ratings of 23 city and 31 highway.

There’s a $500 cash back deal on purchases through June 30. In some regions, there’s $1,000 cash back until May 2 that may be combined with 1.9% financing for three years.

2001 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen

The Jetta wagon comes in three trim levels. A 5-cylinder engine and five-speed manual transmission is standard on the base S model, which starts at $19,995, with mileage rated at 22 city and 30 highway. The optional five-speed automatic on the S is only slightly higher in price and is standard on the SE version. The compact wagon, which has more cargo than the Equinox with 66.9 cubic feet, hasn’t had major changes since 2009, although fuel economy has improved on some versions. The TDI diesel model, with an MSREP of $24,995, has been the most popular this year, accounting for more than half of all orders. With gas prices rising, the TDI Jetta wagon is a good choice with fuel economy of about 30 mpg in the city and up to 42 on the highway.

Unfortunately, the TDI Jetta SportWagen is not included in VW’s lease deal of $179 monthly for 39 months with $1,999 due at signing, but there is $750 bonus cash on leases. That offer expires May 2. VW also has 1.9% financing for anywhere from 12-to-60 months, also ending May 2.
