From a distance, it’s nearly impossible to distinguish the GMC Sierra from its mechanical double, the Chevrolet Silverado. But get closer and the subtle difference comes into sharp focus. Beyond the obligatory mammoth GMC grille, the Sierra exudes a more upscale look, with more chrome and stylized wheel offerings than the Silverado.

Although there is no shortage of GMC and Chevrolet devotees who swear one brand is better than the other, the two are assembled in the same plant on the same production line, making the build and paint quality identical. Interestingly, the Ford F-150 claims the crown as the best-selling full-size pickup truck in America, but when combining the sales of the Silverado and Sierra, it’s GM that sells the most.

Why you want it

Marketed as the “professional grade work truck” the Sierra offers the same rugged capabilities as the Silverado, but wraps them in a more luxurious package. The Sierra also offers the Denali trim, which has no equal on the Chevrolet side.

Available in Regular, Extended and Crew Cab, with long or short beds and two- or four-wheel drive, there’s a Sierra to fit almost every need. The base WT (Work Truck) is the most utilitarian, with an interior featuring larger knobs and switches designed to be operated easily while wearing gloves. The seats, flooring and door materials are also more rough-and-ready, made of easy-to-clean materials. For the person giving the orders instead of taking them, higher-grade SLT and Denali trims are available. After 2009, there is even a hybrid model with a fuel economy rating of 20 mpg (city) and 23 mpg (highway).

Notable features and options

The WT features a 195-horsepower, 4.3-liter V6, rubberized vinyl floor covering, dual glove boxes, manual air conditioning, chrome bumpers, a 40/20/40 vinyl split bench seat and 17-inch painted wheels. SL and SLE trims bring power windows and door locks, cruise control, AM/FM/CD stereo, and carpet, while the SLT gains dual-zone automatic air conditioning, rear defroster, 10-way power driver’s and front passenger bucket seats, Bose audio, fog lamps, and heated outside mirrors.

The Denali adds even more features like heated leather seats, a 6.2-liter, 400-hp V8, locking rear differentials, skid plates, tow hooks, StabiliTrak stability control, and 18- or 20-inch polished wheels. Options are plentiful, including five upgraded suspensions (Z83, Z85, Z71, Z60 and NHT), tow kit, a host of V8 engines and rear axles, plus four-wheel drive. There are also All Terrain, Snow, Max Trailer and Power Tech packages available, along with StabiliTrak stability control, trailer sway control and side-curtain airbags.

Model milestones

2008: XM satellite radio comes standard, while new available features include a power driver’s seat on the 40/20/40 split bench, trailer sway control on Extended and Crew Cabs, and the introduction of the All Terrain trim. All Terrain adds special shock absorbers, bespoke interior and exterior trim, and 18-inch chrome wheels to the Z71 Package.

2009: A new six-speed automatic is standard on models with the 5.3-, 6.0- and 6.2-liter V8 engines. New features include OnStar 8.0 with turn-by-turn navigation, Bluetooth and a rear-view camera. Denali trims now offer available heated and cooled front seats.

2010: Side curtain and front seat-mounted side airbags are now standard on all 1500s, as is StabiliTrak stability control. The 4.8-, 5.3- and 6.2-liter engines are made E85-compatible, while the 4.8- and 5.3-liter engines gain variable valve timing. A console-mounted USB port is standard on all but the base radio.

Engines and performance

The Sierra 1500 covers a wide range of engines and capabilities. For light chores, the 195-hp 4.3-liter V6 is adequate. But the way most people use this truck really requires the 4.8- or 5.3-liter V8s. Maximum towing and hauling abilities are best satisfied by either the 6.0-liter V8’s 367 hp/375 pound-feet of torque, or the 6.2-liter V8’s 403 hp/417 lb-ft.

The 2009/10 models feature a six-speed automatic transmission that improves fuel economy and operation, so go for one of these if the budget permits. As for the Sierra’s overall ride and handling, this thing gets around pretty well for a big, heavy, high-center-of-gravity truck. Once its corners are mapped, the Sierra is easy to park and maneuver, and has a pretty tight turning radius.

Upper models – such as the SLT, Denali and Z71 – have upgraded suspensions that deliver a smooth, comfortable ride on the freeway, yet are capable of tackling some pretty big off-road distortion when asked. Maximum payload for the Regular Cab 2WD standard box is 1,925 pounds, while maximum towing tops out at 10,500 pounds with the Extended Cab 4WD short box with the Enhanced Trailer package.

Recalls, safety ratings and warranties

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued the following recalls for the 2007 to 2010 GMC Sierra 1500:

2008/09: Defective circuit board on the heated windshield wiper fluid system that can short and cause a fire. GM couldn’t seem to correct the problem, so dealers were instructed to disable and remove the system.

Recall repairs are required by law even if the vehicle is out of warranty. Your dealer can check to see if the repairs were performed and, if not, will fix the car at no charge to you.

Safety-wise, the government gives the 2007 to 2010 GMC Sierra excellent marks, scoring five out of five stars in crash tests involving front passengers and four out of five in the rollover test. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), however, gives mixed reviews, with a rating of Good in its frontal offset test, but a Poor for the 2007/09 model’s side impact. Oddly, the 2010 model receives an Acceptable in the same test, even though the two models are identical and both were tested with side curtain airbags.

The 2007 to 2010 GMC Sierra comes with a three-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty and a 100,000-mile/five-year fully transferable powertrain warranty. These trucks also qualify for GMC’s Certified Used plan which offers four different forms of varying cost and coverage. They are: Major Guard, Value Guard, Basic Guard and Smart Care.

Word on the web

Because the 2007 to 2010 GMC Sierra is so new, we did not find a great deal of complaints. Looking at consumer sites such as CarComplaints.com and Consumer Reports, the Sierra generally gains high marks, with only average or below average scores in the area of paint, squeaks and rattles, and body hardware (locks, windows, door latches, etc.). On sites such as gmcowners.com and gm-trucks.com, there is universal praise for the Sierra and its big engines. There are more than a few threads, however, complaining about the bugs in the Active Fuel Management system, mostly on early 2007 and ‘08 models, and even more complaints about the poor customer service provided by some of the dealers.

Auto Trader recommendations

If you use a truck for what it’s made for – a work vehicle and not a cruiser – then the SL trim with the 5.3-liter V8 is a good choice. It’s not as sparse or under-powered as the V6-equipped Work Truck, but it isn’t a disco truck, either. You can get it dirty without worrying about your image. On the other hand, if you use a truck for more sophisticated chores (like towing horse trailers or the speedboat), then shoot for the Crew Cab version of either the SLT with the 6.0-liter or the Denali with the 6.2. Oh, and get the four-wheel-drive model, its fuel economy is nearly the same as the two-wheel-drive truck and it can tow and haul heavier loads.
