If there is a better feeling than hitting the road on a Friday afternoon in a brand new convertible, sun shining down and the weekend wide open ahead, we can't name it. This was reinforced when we drove the 2011 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible V6.

We'd driven less than a mile in the new Camaro Convertible when a driver called out at a red light: "Great day to be you."

Indeed. As we took off from the light, we could feel all eyes drawn to the Camaro, its bright Victory Red paint and growling exhaust system making a definitive statement: this car is serious about having fun.

Until now, Camaro enthusiasts who wanted to drive the fifth generation of this iconic muscle car were limited to hardtop coupe models. But for those who really want to feel the wind in their hair while putting a 300+ horsepower V6 engine through its paces, the 2011 Camaro Convertible will not disappoint.

The car's lines remain true to the retro-inspired style of the original fifth generation concept car – dripping with muscle car attitude. With the top down, it calls out to anyone with a pulse nearby, "Jump in and let's go!"

From the driver's seat, the retro analog gauges and available heads-up display make it exceptionally easy to monitor what's happening under the hood. The dashboard and gearshift console are identical to those in the coupe, so all controls for the cabin and infotainment system remain within easy reach.

The two front seats provide ample room for driver and passenger, however backseat passengers are likely find legroom inadequate, to put it mildly. But that's to be expected; the coupe has a similar backseat issue, and it stands to reason the space to accommodate the folded roof has to come from somewhere.

Trunk capacity gives up some ground as well, but then, you wouldn't be considering a car like this one for its trunk space. Trust us.

But punch the accelerator and the 3.6-liter V6 springs into action, leaving any doubts about the limited backseat and the trunk behind. This V6 has almost as much power as the V8 engine in the previous generation Camaro (last produced in 2002), yet still achieves a fairly respectable (for a quick convertible) 17 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. Chevrolet achieves this balance through the use of direct-injection, which carefully manages the flow of fuel into the engine for more power and better fuel economy.

The rigid frame and stiff sporty suspension feel comparable to the hardtop, a noteworthy feat for a convertible. The Camaro Convertible feels rock-solid, without any of the shakes and wiggles that plague many soft tops.

One downside is the manually installed tonneau cover, which goes over the top when it's down to protect the top from sun damage, keep debris out of the folding mechanism and provide a more finished look. The tonneau cover is unwieldy and takes up valuable trunk space. Installing it means getting out of the car and taking a few minutes to wrestle with the cover to properly align and fasten the mating parts (and doing the whole thing in reverse when it's time to put the top up – imagine doing it in the rain). Most modern convertibles have eschewed this type of manual effort by using integrated covers that open and close automatically with the top; this is one retro throwback we wish Chevrolet had skipped.

Side by side, the Camaro Convertible holds its ground among its competitors. While the $29,150 base price of the Camaro Convertible is a bit higher than the $27,310 starting point of the Ford Mustang Convertible, the Camaro's taut handling and powerful-yet-efficient direct-injection V6 make it a standout in its class.
