ADDITIONAL MODEL INFORMATION

author photo by Ron Sessions April 2015

The Honda Odyssey was all new for 2011 with lightning-bolt beltline styling, a lower roof and a wider stance. The 2012 Honda Odyssey continues with minimal changes. The top-selling minivan offers outstanding utility, with room for eight passengers in all but the base LX model and 148.5 cu ft. of cargo space with the second- and third-row seats folded. A 3-mode second-row seat allows third-row access with second-row child seats in place. A total of five LATCH child-seat anchors are available on all but the base LX. New for the 2012 Odyssey EX is standard Bluetooth phone integration, an 8-inch multi-information screen and a USB audio interface.

The Honda Odyssey is a good used-car choice for growing families on the go, and it enjoys above-average resale value.

What We Like

Up to five LATCH positions for child seats; three rows of adult-friendly seats; wide sliding side doors; fuel economy; interior material quality; fold-into-floor third-row seat

What We Don't

Nearly as long as a Mercedes Benz S-Class sedan; upper trims as expensive as some midsize luxury crossover SUVs; no all-wheel-drive option

Fuel Economy & Engine Specs

The Odyssey is powered by a 3.5-liter single-overhead-camshaft V6. Equipped with four valves per cylinder, variable valve timing and a dual-stage intake manifold, the 3.5 V6 generates 248 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque on regular unleaded fuel. LX, EX and EX-L models use a 5-speed automatic transmission and are rated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) at 18 miles per gallon in the city and 27 mpg on the highway, while Touring models are fitted with a 6-speed automatic and receive a 19 mpg city/28 mpg hwy EPA rating. All models are equipped with front-wheel drive. The Odyssey's Variable Cylinder Management system shuts down two or three cylinders during light-throttle cruising to save fuel. The Odyssey can tow up to 3,500 pounds but requires premium unleaded fuel and an electric trailer brake when towing.

Standard Features & Options

The 2012 Honda Odyssey is available in LX, EX, EX-L, Touring and Touring Elite trims.

The LX trim includes 17-in steel wheels, front and rear air conditioning, remote keyless entry, cruise control, a tilt-telescopic steering wheel, a 5-speaker AM/FM/CD stereo with an MP3 decoder and subwoofer, stability and traction control, 3-row seating for seven passengers, cloth upholstery, a power driver's seat with manual lumbar adjustment, a fold-into-floor split third-row bench seat, anti-lock brakes with brake assist, dual front- and side-impact airbags, overhead airbags, and power locks, windows and mirrors.

The EX upgrades to 8-passenger seating, 17-in alloy wheels, power-sliding doors, a removable front center console, a trash-bag ring, a 7-speaker audio system with two gigabytes of memory, a USB audio interface, Bluetooth phone integration, an 8-in color center-stack display, the HomeLink system, 3-zone automatic air conditioning, second-row sunshades, a power driver's seat with lumbar support, steering-wheel audio and cruise-control buttons, a conversation mirror, a compass and an outside-temperature gauge.

The EX-L adds a leather-trimmed steering wheel, first- and second-row leather seats, a power lift gate, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, SiriusXM radio, heated front seats, a power front passenger's seat and a backup camera. Optional EX-L packages add navigation or a rear entertainment system.

The Touring trim upgrades to a 6-speed automatic transmission, 18-in alloy wheels, navigation, rear entertainment with a 9-in display, wireless headphones, an RCA video input and a 115-volt outlet, driver's seat memory, fog lights, third-row sunshades, a 1-motion folding third-row Magic Seat, and front and rear ultrasonic parking assist.

The Touring Elite adds a 12-speaker audio system with surround sound, rear entertainment with an ultrawide 16.2-in screen, HID headlamps and a blind spot monitoring system.

Pricing

The Odyssey has consistently ranked at the top of the minivan class in quality ratings and sales numbers. As a result, resale values are high, and used-car prices reflect that. One good bet is to select a Honda-certified pre-owned (CPO) Odyssey, which receives a rigorous inspection and extended warranty protection. These typically have prices that can save buyers 30-45 percent compared to the cost of a new Odyssey.

To get a good idea of the 2012 Odyssey's price range, investigate the Kelley Blue Book used-car values at KBB.com. You can also search the Autotrader Classifieds to see what models are for sale in your area.

Recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued the following recalls for the 2012 Odyssey:

In subfreezing weather, the transmission in some Odysseys can be shifted out of park without depressing the brake pedal, allowing it to roll away and increasing crash risk.

Missing rivets can alter driver-airbag deployment in an accident, increasing injury risk.

A suspension fastener may have been insufficiently tightened at the factory, possibly affecting steering control and increasing crash risk.

Recall repairs are required by law, even if the vehicle is out of warranty. Your dealer can check to see if the repairs were performed, and if not, will fix the car at no charge to you.

Safety Ratings & Warranties

NHTSA gave the 2012 Odyssey a 5-star overall rating, with five stars in frontal and side impacts and four stars for rollover performance.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety made the 2012 Odyssey a Top Safety Pick with Good ratings for moderate-overlap front and side impacts, as well as roof crush, head restraints and seats.

American Honda Motor Company sold the 2012 Odyssey with a 3-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty and a 5-year/unlimited-distance corrosion-perforation warranty.

Honda CPO vehicles must be younger than 6 years and can't have more than 80,000 miles on the odometer. Every CPO Odyssey undergoes a multipoint inspection. Those that pass receive a 12-month/12,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, extending the basic new-car warranty to 48 months or 48,000 miles and powertrain coverage to 7 years or 100,000 miles from when the vehicle was first sold (whichever occurs first). Also included is a vehicle-history report and 3 free months of SiriusXM radio.

Other Cars to Consider

2012 Chrysler Town & Country -- The 2012 version of Chrysler's landmark minivan gets standard leather seating and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system. Its 283-hp 3.6-liter dual-overhead-camshaft V6 is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission that's EPA-rated at 17 mpg city/25 mpg hwy. The Town & Country offers crisp steering and fold-into-the-floor second-row seats, but the third-row seat room is a bit tight.

2012 Toyota Sienna -- For 2012, the Sienna XLE gets a standard power driver's seat and auto headlamps. Sienna offers flat-folding third-row seats and second-row seats that slide fore or aft by nearly 2 feet. Avoid the base 187-hp 2.7-liter 4-cylinder; go for the peppy 265-hp 3.5-liter V6 instead. All-wheel drive is available, as well as a sporty SE "man van" with sport-tuned suspension.

Autotrader's Advice

The best bang for your buck is an EX or EX-L model, which will have most features that minivan buyers want, such as 8-passenger seating, five LATCH positions for child seats, power-sliding doors, 3-zone automatic air conditioning and an upgraded audio system. The EX-L adds leather seating that, despite looking and wearing better, cleans up better than cloth material. Look for well-maintained, lower-mileage examples when possible, and always get a car-history report. Going the Honda certified pre-owned route is always a wise choice. Also, check that recalls have been performed on the Odyssey you're considering.
