The 2012 Infiniti QX56 employs body-on-frame construction to create a strong and capable luxury SUV as adept at hauling and towing as it is at pampering its occupants. Although the QX56's primary rivals remain the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator, it also compares well with smaller unit-body SUVs, such as the Land Rover Range Rover and Mercedes-Benz GL-Class.

Unlike the Lincoln and Cadillac, the 2012 QX56 doesn't share its platform with less-expensive family SUVs. Instead, Infiniti chose to build the 2012 QX from a rugged military-based SUV platform known in Japan as the Patrol. The change from the Nissan Armada platform means the 2012 QX56 is roomier than the first-generation QX56 (2004-2010), and its advanced electrical architecture permits more high-tech features.

Inside, the QX56 offers seating for seven or eight passengers, plus a luxurious interior typical of Infiniti vehicles. From a capability standpoint, it has a 5.6-liter V8 pumping out 400 horsepower and can tow up to 8,500 pounds. There's also an available hydraulic suspension designed to eliminate body roll and dip. When so equipped, the big QX56 handles impressively well for its size, although parking and maneuvering such a vehicle still poses a challenge, especially in tight urban and city confines.

What We Like

Stunning interior design; handles well for its size; cutting-edge electronics and entertainment systems; powerful V8

What We Don't

In-your-face styling; cramped third-row seat; poor fuel economy; stiff ride with optional suspension and 22-inch tires; limited off-road ability

Fuel Economy & Engine Specs

The Infiniti QX56 is powered by a 5.6-liter V8, good for 400 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque. Both rear-wheel- and all-wheel-drive (AWD) models use the same 7-speed automatic transmission and come standard with hill-start assist. AWD models also feature adjustable settings for snow and towing. Environmental Protection Agency fuel economy estimates for both the rear- and all-wheel-drive QX56 are 14 miles per gallon in the city and 20 mpg on the highway.

Standard Features & Options

The 2012 QX56 comes in one well-equipped model with a number of option packages. New for the 2012 model year, Blind Spot Intervention was added to the Technology package, while a 15-speaker Bose cabin surround-sound system joined the Deluxe Touring package.

Standard equipment for the QX56 includes automatic bi-xenon headlights, 13-speaker Bose audio with 9.3-gigabyte hard-drive storage, Intelligent Key keyless entry with push-button starting, power heated side mirrors with a reverse tilt-down feature, second-row bucket seating, a 10-way power driver's seat and an 8-way power passenger seat with power lumbar, a power-folding third-row seat, a power tilt-telescopic steering column, a heated steering wheel, voice-activated navigation, tri-zone automatic climate control, front and rear parking sensors, the Around View 360-degree exterior monitor, rain-sensing wipers, a power rear lift gate, a power sunroof, Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, and 20-in alloy wheels.

The Theatre package adds dual 7-in color monitors, heated second-row seats with a remote tip-up feature, wireless headphones and a remote, auxiliary inputs and a 120-volt power outlet.

The Technology package brings adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning and prevention, a blind spot monitoring and intervention system, and adaptive front headlights with an auto-leveling feature.

Lastly, the Deluxe Touring package adds 22-in wheels, Infiniti's Hydraulic Body Motion Control system, climate-controlled front seats, heated second-row seats, 15-speaker Bose audio, semi-aniline leather seating, headlight washers, burl wood trim and Infiniti's Advanced Climate Control System.

Pricing

The 2012 QX56 holds good resale values on par with the Cadillac Escalade, better than the Lincoln Navigator but lagging behind the Lexus LX 570 and Land Rover Range Rover. All-wheel-drive models will likely fetch slightly higher prices in areas where snow is a regular impediment. For a good idea of the QX56's price range, we suggest checking the used-car values at KBB.com. You can also search the Autotrader Classifieds to see what models are currently for sale in your area.

Recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued the following recall for the 2012 Infiniti QX56:

A recall was issued for an improperly tightened fuel pressure sensor. The sensor could leak fuel and, in the presence of an ignition source, lead to a vehicle fire.

Recall repairs are required by law, even if the vehicle is out of warranty. Your dealer can check to see if the repairs were performed and, if not, will fix the car at no charge to you. You can also check the NHTSA website; simply enter your vehicle's identification number for a list of performed recall repairs.

Safety Ratings & Warranties

NHTSA has not tested the QX56, nor has the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Infiniti equips the QX with a long list of standard safety features, including 3-row side-curtain airbags, front side-impact airbags, a tire-pressure monitor, and electronic traction and stability control.

When new, the Infiniti QX56 came with a 4-year/60,000-mile basic warranty and a 6-year/70,000-mile powertrain warranty. Infiniti also offered a fully transferable extended warranty that could be purchased when the car was new, so be sure to check if the car you're buying has such a warranty. If you buy your QX56 sedan through Infiniti's certified pre-owned (CPO) program, the basic warranty period is extended to 72 months/100,000 miles from the vehicle's in-service date. Buyers can also purchase an additional 2 years and 20,000 miles of coverage through the CPO program. To qualify, a vehicle must have less than 60,000 miles and be no older than 4 years from its in-service date.

Other Cars to Consider

2012 Cadillac Escalade -- The Escalade roughly offers the same hp, tow rating and luxury features as the QX56, but the extended-length model offers seating for nine and a much larger third-row seat.

2012 Lincoln Navigator -- The Navigator can't match the QX56 for power or technology, but it can tow more (9,000 pounds) and, like the Cadillac, offers an extended-length model. The Navigator will also cost less.

2012 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class -- The Mercedes-Benz GL isn't as big as the QX56, which can be a good thing. Luxury and performance are easily a match for the Infiniti, plus the GL offers a range of engine choices, including two V8s and a V6 turbodiesel. Be prepared to pay more for the GL, though.

Autotrader's Advice

Our choice would be an AWD model with the Technology package. It gives you all the luxury and safety you'll need. The Deluxe package is a nice upgrade, but its 22-in wheels and hydraulic suspension make for a rather stiff ride.
