If there’s one thing better than a regular Porsche, it’s a special-edition Porsche. Such as this, the 2012 Cayman S Black Edition. It comes, unsurprisingly, in black only, with 19-inch alloy wheels and an interior to match. Even the “Cayman S” badge on the trunk lid and the exhaust pipe tips, which would normally be shiny, are black.

It’s not all unrelenting monochrome, despite the black background of the dials (usually white). The interior flashes some stainless steel and aluminum trim here and there, such as the spokes of the leather-covered (guess which color) steering wheel.

Then there’s the red blood that’ll be pumping in the driver’s heart once the 3.4-liter engine is fired up. Porsche has given this Black Edition an extra 10 horsepower over the conventional Cayman S, filling the stable to the tune of 330 hp – perfect for exploiting the car’s excellent chassis, sprinting from standstill to 60 mph in a possible 4.6 seconds, and hitting speeds in excess of 170 mph. Yet Porsche still claims 20 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway.

The price starts at $67,500 (plus $950 destination charges), a hike of $5,400 over a regular Cayman S. But this version comes with more standard equipment. To spec an S up to a comparable level would cost around $2,000 more than a BE.

Just like Black Editions of the 911 and Boxster, Porsche’s Convenience Package is included, comprising a Bose surround-sound audio system, touchscreen navigation, satellite radio, adaptive bi-xenon headlights and rain-sensing wipers.

There are still a few ways to spend extra money. One is to choose the seven-speed, double-clutch, PDK semi-automatic transmission ($3,420) over the standard-issue six-speed manual. The other is to spring for the optional Sport Chrono Package ($950) that enables the fastest sprint times.

Only 500 examples of the 2012 Porsche Cayman S Black Edition will be built. Incidentally, there was a Boxster Black Edition on the Porsche stand at the recent 2011 New York auto show and it looked pretty darn sweet. Just saying.
