Volvo is recalling all 2012 S60 sedans for a problem with the software that manages the car's fuel system. The software is not be completely compatible with the fuel pump in the car, and there is a risk of the pump stopping and stalling the engine even while there is fuel left in the tank.

Anytime the engine stops while driving, there is an increased risk of a crash, partly because some accessories like power brakes turn off when the engine stops turning.

According to a report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the problem starts to appear when the car has less than a quarter tank of fuel left. So until repairs can be made, 2012 S60 owners should keep more fuel in their car.

The recall starts on June 17, and owners of 2012 S60s should contact their local dealer to find out about scheduling repairs. Volvo cars that qualify for the warranty work will have their electronics upgraded with new software free of charge. 7,558 cars are affected by the recall.

The S60 is available as a T5 model with front wheel drive, or a T6 all wheel drive model with a more powerful engine. According to the report, both types of cars suffer from the fuel software issue.

If you are driving and experience an unexpected engine stall, the important thing to remember is to remain calm. Even with power brakes and power steering turned off, a car is still capable of turning and stopping. The lack of any power assistance means that the steering or brakes may feel different and will most likely require more force to operate, but a driver should be able to safely coast to a stop without too much effort.
