The 2013 Nissan Rogue is the brand's best-selling crossover, blending compact-car efficiency and agility with SUV practicality and versatility. An all-independent suspension imparts a nimble, fun-to-drive feel to the 5-passenger Rogue, belying its generous 29 cu ft. of cargo room and 58 cu ft. with the rear seat folded down. A 170-horsepower 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine provides more-than-ample acceleration, although a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), the only one available, sometimes makes the Rogue's forward progress feel disconnected from the engine.

Both front- and all-wheel-drive systems are available. Unique features include an available pop-up cargo organizer and a fold-flat front passenger seat that allows owners to stow ladders and lumber up to 8 feet long inside the vehicle with the rear hatch closed. For 2013, a new SV with the SL Package bundles leather seats, navigation, 18-inch alloy wheels, an Around View monitor, power moonroof and other premium content as the top-of-the-line offering.

The Nissan Rogue is a smart buy for young families looking for a versatile compact crossover that will fit in the garage and won't strain the fuel budget. Standard safety gear includes stability and traction control, dual front airbags, front-seat side airbags, overhead airbags and anti-lock 4-wheel disc brakes.

What We Like

Available navigation system and backup camera; good interior room for five; compliant ride quality; fold-down front passenger seat for carrying long items

What We Don't

Lacks telescopic steering wheel; no manual-transmission choice; engine drones under acceleration with CVT automatic; limited rearward visibility

Fuel Economy & Engine Specs

The 2013 Rogue features a 2.5-liter double-overhead-camshaft 16-valve 4-cylinder engine, developing an ample-for-the-class 170 hp and 175 lb-ft of torque. It burns regular unleaded gas and has an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rating of 23 miles per gallon in the city and 28 mpg on the highway with standard front-wheel drive and a 22 mpg city/27 mpg hwy rating with optional all-wheel drive. The Nissan XTRONIC CVT automatic is standard.

Standard Features & Options

The 2013 Rogue is available in three trims: the S, SV and the SV equipped with the SL package.

The Rogue S offers standard cloth seats, air conditioning, a drive computer, a 4-speaker AM/FM/CD stereo with iPod connectivity, a tilt steering wheel, illuminated vanity mirrors, remote keyless entry, cruise control, variable intermittent wipers, stability and traction control, anti-lock brakes, 16-in steel wheels, a split folding rear seat and power windows, mirrors and door locks. The optional Special Edition package adds 16-in alloy wheels, fog lamps, a 4.3-in display audio screen with a USB port and SiriusXM radio, steering-wheel audio controls, a backup camera and rear privacy glass.

The Rogue SV brings standard 17-in alloy wheels, a power driver's seat with adjustable lumbar support, upgraded cloth seats, rear privacy glass, Yakima-compatible roof rails, a fold-flat front passenger seat and a 6-speaker stereo with a 4.3-in color audio display and USB interface. SV options include a navigation system with a 5-in screen, automatic climate control, automatic headlamps, a power moonroof, a 7-speaker Bose stereo with steering-wheel audio controls, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, dual visor vanity illumination, a sequential sport shifter with a leather shift knob, heated front seats, fog lamps and a cargo organizer.

The new-for-2013 SV with the SL package includes the innovative Around View monitor (which uses four cameras to provide an overhead view of the car and its immediate surroundings), 18-in alloy wheels, heated side mirrors, a power moonroof, auto xenon headlamps, leather seating, heated front seats, fog lamps, a Bose 7-speaker premium audio system with a USB interface and subwoofer, navigation, auto climate control and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

Pricing

The Rogue is Nissan's best-selling crossover SUV and, along with the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4, has ranked among the top-selling compact crossovers for several years, so you can expect Nissan dealers to have a good supply of clean examples to choose from.

For a better idea of the 2013 Rogue's price range, check out KBB.com, then search the Autotrader Classifieds to see what models are for sale in your area.

Recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the following recall for the 2013 Nissan Rogue:

Snow and road salt saturating the driver's footwell carpet may cause a short circuit in the electrical harness underneath, creating a fire risk.

Recall repairs are required by law, even if the vehicle is out of warranty. Your dealer can check to see if the repairs were performed and, if not, will fix the car for free.

Safety Ratings & Warranties

NHTSA gave the 2013 Nissan Rogue a 4-star overall rating, with five stars for side-impact protection and four for front impacts and rollovers.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 2013 Rogue a Good rating for side impacts, head-restraint and seat crash performance, and moderate-overlap front impacts but only a Marginal rating for small-overlap front impacts and an Acceptable score for roof strength.

The 2013 Rogue carries a 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty, a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty and a 5-year/unlimited-mile corrosion-perforation warranty.

Nissan certified pre-owned (CPO) cars can't have more than 80,000 miles on the odometer and must be under 6 years old. Every CPO Rogue undergoes a 150-point inspection and gets a Carfax report. The Nissan CPO warranty extends the original powertrain warranty to 7 years/100,000 miles and includes 24-hour roadside assistance.

Other Cars to Consider

2013 Toyota RAV4 -- The RAV4 is all-new for 2013, ditching the previous year's optional V6 engine and third-row seat. Power is via a 176-hp 2.5-liter 4-cylinder and 6-speed automatic. A backup camera is standard. EPA estimates are 24 mpg city/31 mpg hwy with front-wheel drive and 22 mpg city/29 mpg hwy with all-wheel drive. Cargo room is an impressive 73.4 cu ft. with the rear seat folded.

2013 Honda CR-V -- The top-selling compact was all-new for 2012 and continues with a 185-hp 2.4-liter 4-cylinder and 5-speed automatic, good for EPA fuel economy estimates of 23 mpg city/31 mpg hwy with front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is also offered. Cargo room is 37.2 cu ft. with the rear seat up and 70.9 cu ft. with it folded down.

Autotrader's Advice

The Rogue is a roomy, fun-to-drive compact crossover in a class not known for excitement. We think the Rogue SV offers the best value with its standard 17-in alloy wheels, power driver's seat with adjustable lumbar support, upgraded cloth seats, fold-flat front passenger seat, Yakima-compatible roof rails, rear privacy glass and 6-speaker stereo with a 4.3-in color audio display and USB interface. All Rogues come with Nissan's fuel-saving XTRONIC CVT automatic. The CVT takes some getting used to the first time you drive one because of the disconnected feel between the engine and road speed, which is normal and nothing to worry about. Go for a CPO vehicle when possible, and make sure the Rogue you're thinking of buying has experienced care and maintenance. Also, check with the dealer to verify that the Rogue you are considering has had all applicable safety recalls performed.
