The 2014 Chevrolet Camaro continues the successful comeback for the storied pony car that began with an all-new fifth-generation version for the 2010 model year. New for 2014 are slightly revised front and rear fascias, new headlamps and LED taillamps, a new RS grille, a new 1LE rear spoiler and a new SS hood design. Inside, the driver information center and optional head-up display now have color graphics. The track-oriented Z28 makes its debut for 2014, featuring a hand-built 505-horsepower 7.0-liter V8, Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes, Recaro seats and 19-inch forged aluminum wheels wrapped with Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R racing tires.

The 2014 Chevrolet Camaro is a good used-car choice because parts and service are both readily available, and evergreen popularity means it will have a good resale value down the road.

What We Like

Updated 1969 Camaro styling; 7-in touchscreen and navigation; independent rear suspension; V6 fuel economy; ZL1 has awesome acceleration; 1LE and Z28 are track-ready

What We Don't

Poor outward visibility; rear seat is unsuitable for adults; tiny trunk opening; heavy for its size

Fuel Economy & Engine Specs

The 2014 Camaro has five available engines. The base powerplant in the LS and LT models is an all-aluminum 3.6-liter dual-overhead-camshaft V6 with direct injection. It produces 323 hp and 278 lb-ft of torque, burns regular unleaded gasoline and has an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rating of 17 miles per gallon in the city and 28 mpg on the highway with the standard 6-speed manual transmission and 18-19 mpg city/29-30 mpg hwy with the optional 6-speed automatic.

Standard in the Camaro SS is an aluminum-block 6.2-liter overhead-valve small-block Chevy V8. SS models with the standard 6-speed manual gearbox come with the LS3 version of the 6.2-liter V8, which produces 426 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. The engine is EPA-rated at 16 mpg city/24 mpg hwy. SS Camaros running the optional 6-speed automatic transmission get a detuned L99 6.2-liter V8, producing 400 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque and EPA-rated at 16 mpg city/24-25 mpg hwy. The L99 has a cylinder-deactivation system: Active Fuel Management, which idles 4-cylinders under low-load conditions. Premium fuel is recommended but not required for SS models with V8s.

A supercharged 6.2-liter V8 powers the ZL1. It produces a prodigious 580 hp and 556 lb-ft of torque. EPA ratings are 14 mpg city/19 mpg hwy for the 6-speed manual and just 12 mpg city/18 mpg hwy for the 6-speed automatic. Premium fuel is also required for the vehicle.

The new-for-2014 Z28 gets a naturally aspirated 7.0-liter V8. It makes 505 hp and 481 lb-ft of torque on premium fuel. EPA estimates are 13 mpg city/19 mpg hwy. The only transmission is a 6-speed manual.

Standard Features & Options

Typical LS equipment includes air conditioning, cruise control, a tilt-telescopic steering wheel, remote keyless entry, SiriusXM radio, the OnStar communication system, a 6-speaker AM/FM/CD stereo with steering-wheel controls, automatic headlamps, 18-in steel wheels, stability and traction control, anti-lock brakes, a V6 engine with a 6-speed manual transmission and power doors, windows and mirrors. Convertibles feature a power-operated soft-top, an acoustic headliner, a glass back window with a defogger and a standard backup camera.

Moving up to the LT trim adds the Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system with a 7-in touchscreen, fog lamps, power front seats, an upgraded audio system, 18-in alloy wheels, a leather-wrapped shifter and steering wheel and a reverse-sensing system. More importantly, options include heated leather front seats, remote starting, navigation, interior ambient lighting, auxiliary gauges, a backup camera and a power moonroof.

Upgrading to the SS will add the naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 and Brembo brakes, an FE3/FE4 suspension with bigger anti-roll bars, adjustable traction- and stability-control settings, a unique hood and 20-in alloy wheels. Recaro seats are optional.

The available RS package adds a unique grille, a rear spoiler, 20-in alloy wheels, unique paint, HID headlamps with halo rings and special taillights.

The awesome ZL-1 brings a 580-hp supercharged V8, magnetic ride shocks with sport, tour and track modes, brake cooling ducts, an aluminum hood with a carbon-fiber insert, interior trim upgrades and super-wide 20-in summer tires. Optional are Recaro seats.

The 1LE package for the SS includes special gearing, a transmission cooler, a short-throw shifter, monotube rear shocks, a strut brace, Goodyear Supercar track tires, a matte hood and special front and rear spoilers.

The new-for-2014 Z28 coupe includes the 505-hp 7.0-liter V8, a 6-speed manual transmission, Recaro seats, Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes and 19-in forged aluminum wheels. Air conditioning is optional.

Pricing

Camaros are usually front-row items in used-car lots, and you can expect to pay higher prices during cruising season. Gearheads may prefer a manual transmission, but most of the higher-priced cars you'll see are well-optioned automatics. Generally, Camaros don't see a lot of long-distance driving, so odometer readings will most likely be low.

To get an idea of the 2014 Camaro's price range, investigate the used-car values at KBB.com. You can also search the Autotrader Classifieds to see which models are for sale in your area.

Recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced the following recalls for the 2014 Camaro:

The intermediate steering shaft and steering gear and/or the lower control arm and lower ball joint may separate, causing a loss of steering and a crash risk.

Insufficient space between the driver's knee and the ignition key may cause the driver's knee to bump the key, shutting off the engine and power to the airbags. Also, a loss of power, steering and brake boost may increase the risk of a crash.

On Camaro coupes, the airbag warning label on the sun visor may peel off.

Recall repairs are required by law even if the vehicle is out of warranty. Your dealer can check to see if the repairs were performed and, if not, will fix the car at no charge.

Safety Ratings & Warranties

NHTSA gave the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro coupe five stars overall and for frontal and side impacts, as well as rollover performance. It did not rate the crash performance of the 2014 Camaro convertible.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety did not evaluate the 2014 Camaro for crash performance.

General Motors covered the 2014 Camaro with a 3-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, a 5-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty with roadside assistance and a 6-year/100,000-mile corrosion-perforation warranty.

Chevrolet certified pre-owned cars cannot have more than 75,000 miles on the odometer and must be 5 years old or less. Every CPO Camaro undergoes a 172-point inspection. Those that pass receive a 12-month/12,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, plus whatever remains on the transferable original 5-year/100,000-mile powertrain coverage. Also included is a 2-year/24,000-mile maintenance plan with roadside assistance.

Other Cars to Consider

2014 Ford Mustang -- The Mustang is smaller, lighter and more nimble, has higher EPA ratings and is easier to see out of than the Camaro. It is, however, also noisier and less stable, and it doesn't handle as well. Its engine lineup includes a 305-hp 3.7-liter V6, a 420-hp 5.0-liter V8 and the Shelby GT500's mind-numbing supercharged 662-hp 5.8-liter V8.

2014 Dodge Challenger -- The Challenger offers a decently sized rear seat and trunk. And for 2014, 20-in wheels are optional on all models. With HEMI V8 power, it's an exciting muscle car -- especially in the 470-hp SRT8 model. However, handling doesn't come close to matching the precision of the Camaro.

Autotrader's Advice

If this Camaro will see everyday use, consider an LT coupe with the 3.6-liter V6. The V6 gets decent gas mileage, has plenty of power, is easier to insure and has better-balanced handling and more precise steering than the V8. However, if this is a long-term investment, a convertible or the V8-powered SS, 1LE, new Z28 or ZL1 are better choices. The V8 cars will always be in demand due to their unique heritage. Go for a Chevrolet certified pre-owned car when available, and check with your dealer to make sure all applicable recalls have been performed on the Camaro you are considering.
