The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 light-duty pickup is available as a 2- to 3-passenger regular cab, a 5- to 6-passenger double cab or a 5- to 6-passenger crew cab. The regular cabs have just two doors and come with a standard 6.5-foot bed or a long 8-foot bed. The newly named double cab is slightly shorter and less roomy than the crew cab; it replaces the previous extended cab and features four forward-hinged doors and just a 6.5-foot bed. Because the crew cab is the longest, it comes standard with the short 5.7-foot bed, but the 6.5-foot bed is optional. Both rear-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive (4WD) are offered, and 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, stability control, front-seat side airbags and overhead airbags are standard.

The 2014 Silverado gains all-new sheet metal, a new, roomier interior, updated infotainment, three all-new engines with substantially improved power and fuel economy, a standard 6-speed automatic, new frame mounts, and revised steering, suspension and brakes. For 2014, maximum towing capacity is increased to 12,000 pounds. The latest safety systems are available, including lane-departure and forward-collision alerts, front and rear park assist and trailer sway control. A new top-of-the-line High Country debuts for 2014.

What We Like

Roomier cabin; improved power and fuel economy on all engines; new cargo management features; improved ride quality

What We Don't

No diesel engine or manual transmission; no SS model

Fuel Economy & Engine Specs

2014 Silverado 1500 Regular, Double and Crew Cabs are available with an all-new 4.3-liter V6 with variable valve timing and direct injection that makes 285 horsepower and 305 lb-ft of torque. Active Fuel Management idles unneeded cylinders to save fuel under light cruising conditions. Two-wheel-drive (2WD) versions are rated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) at 18 miles per gallon in the city and 24 mpg on the highway, while 4WDs get a 17 mpg city/22 mpg hwy rating. Regular unleaded or E85 fuel is specified. A 6-speed automatic transmission is standard.

Also all-new, a 5.3-liter V8 is available on regular, double and crew cabs, burning regular unleaded or E85. Using variable valve timing and direct injection, it produces 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. Equipped with a 6-speed automatic, EPA ratings for 2WD models are 16 mpg city/23 mpg hwy, while 4WDs get 16 mpg city/22 mpg hwy. The 5.3-liter V8 uses Active Fuel Management that idles four of the eight cylinders to save fuel when cruising.

Double and crew cabs are available with a 6.2-liter V8 with 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. Regular unleaded is recommended. EPA estimates improve to 15 mpg city/21 mpg hwy for 2-wheel drive and 14 mpg city/20 mpg hwy for 4WD. A 6-speed automatic comes standard.

Standard Features & Options

The 2014 Silverado 1500 comes in WT, LT, LTZ and High Country trims.

The WT comes with rubberized flooring, a vinyl 40/20/40-split front bench seat, air conditioning, 17-inch steel wheels, a 4-speaker AM/FM radio, cruise control, power door locks, a tilt steering wheel, auto headlamps, a black grille and front bumper, a black rear bumper and manual-folding outside mirrors. 2WT equipment adds chrome bumpers, cloth seats, carpeting, driver-adjustable lumbar, remote keyless entry, OnStar, a 4.2-in color MyLink infotainment display with Bluetooth, voice recognition, USB ports, a CD/MP3 player and power windows and mirrors.

The LT adds a chrome grille, 17-in alloy wheels, steering-wheel audio controls, carpeting, upgraded cloth seats, driver's-seat lumbar adjustment, a limited-slip differential, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, fog lamps, a 6-speaker stereo with an 8-in touchscreen, a compass and an outside-temperature gauge.

The LTZ brings the 5.3-liter V8, a body-color front bumper and grille surround, leather seats, heated power front seats, a memory driver's seat, dual-zone auto climate control, 18-in alloys, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, power-folding turn-signal mirrors and a garage-door opener.

The High Country adds a telescoping steering wheel, front and rear park assist, ventilated front seats, a touring suspension, 20-in alloys and a 7-speaker Bose stereo.

The off-road-oriented Z71 package includes 265/65-18 on-/off-road tires on alloy wheels, increased ground clearance, wheel flares and off-road suspension with Rancho monotube shocks.

Pricing

Crew cabs are the priciest because they have four conventional doors and the most enclosed space and room. Four-wheel-drive models exact a premium, especially in northern or mountain states.

Recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced these recalls for the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500:

A sticking ignition switch may spring back to the accessory position, cutting power to the engine, airbags, power steering and power brakes.

Faulty seat-bracket welds may allow the seats to come loose in a crash.

On 4WD Silverados, a short may cause the transfer case to shift into neutral unexpectedly.

The base AM/FM radio amplifier may fail, shutting off the seat-belt or door-open warning chime.

A loose transmission cooler line may spray fluid onto hot engine parts, creating a fire risk.

Improperly tightened tie rods can come loose from the steering gear, causing a loss of steering control.

The front passenger airbag may not fully inflate in a crash, creating an injury risk.

Recall repairs are required by law, even if the vehicle is out of warranty. Your dealer can check to see if the repairs were performed and, if not, will fix the car at no charge to you.

Safety Ratings & Warranties

NHTSA gave the 2014 Silverado five stars overall, with five for frontal and side impacts and four for rollover performance.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) rated the 2014 Silverado Crew Cab as Good for moderate-overlap front impacts. IIHS did not rate side-impact, head-restraint, seat-crash performance or roof strength. IIHS also did not rate regular or double cabs.

Chevrolet covered the 2014 Silverado with a 3-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, a 5-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty with roadside assistance and a 6-year/100,000-mile corrosion-perforation warranty.

Chevrolet certified pre-owned (CPO) vehicles cannot have more than 75,000 miles on the odometer and must be 5 years old or newer. Every CPO Silverado undergoes a 172-point inspection. Those that pass receive a 12-month/12,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, plus whatever remains on the transferable, original 5-year/100,000-mile powertrain coverage.

Other Cars to Consider

2014 Ford F-150 -- Ford adds the Tremor sport truck. The engine lineup continues with a 365-hp twin-turbo EcoBoost 3.5-liter V6, a 302-hp 3.7-liter V6, a 360-hp 5.0-liter V8 and a 411-hp 6.2-liter V8. Max towing capacity remains at 11,300 pounds.

2014 RAM 1500 -- A new 240-hp 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel with a 28 mpg hwy EPA label joins the 305-hp 3.6-liter V6 and 395-hp 5.7-liter HEMI V8. Other features include an 8-speed automatic transmission with a twist-knob shifter, plus an optional air suspension and RamBox enclosed bed storage.

Autotrader's Advice

Double and crew cabs with the midlevel 5.3-liter V8 are what most people want. We'd recommend at least the LT trim to get alloy wheels and the 8-in touchscreen. Avoid modified trucks, and look for lower-mileage examples. Check out certified pre-owned trucks. Be sure to get a vehicle-history report, and make sure all safety recalls have been performed.
