The 2014 Dodge Charger offers a unique performance-oriented blend of rear-wheel drive and available V8 power. All-wheel drive is also available, a consideration in parts of the country that experience snowy winters. The sporty, full-size 4-door sedan offers coupelike styling and is available in a wide variety of packages, from the mild, V6-powered SXT to the wild, HEMI-stuffed R/T and SRT8.

Dodge offers an optional package with cold-air induction and low-restriction exhaust that boosts the Charger's base 3.6-liter V6 to 300 horsepower. Blacktop packages mix a black roof, a monochromatic paint scheme and a rear spoiler, while all-wheel-drive Sport packages are available on the SXT and R/T.

The 2014 Charger continues to be a good used-car choice for the performance-minded driver who wants spaciousness and style in an affordable package.

What We Like

Fuel economy of 3.6-liter V6 with 8-speed automatic; coupelike styling; HEMI V8 performance; all-wheel-drive availability; Uconnect touchscreen infotainment; throwback muscle-car fun of SRT8

What We Don't

No manual-transmission option; front seats aren't supportive enough; HEMI fuel-saver mode sometimes overly aggressive; steering could provide more road feedback

Fuel Economy & Engine Specs

The Charger SE and SXT both feature a Pentastar 3.6-liter dual-overhead-camshaft V6 with four valves per cylinder and sequential multiport fuel injection. The Pentastar pumps out a healthy 292 hp and packs 260 lb-ft of torque on regular unleaded gas. It has an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rating of 18 miles per gallon in the city and 27 mpg on the highway with either the rear-wheel drive plus standard Autostick 5-speed automatic transmission or the all-wheel drive paired with the 8-speed automatic. Ratings improve to 19 mpg city/31 mpg hwy on rear-wheel-drive models using the 8-speed. An optional package with cold-air induction and low-restriction exhaust boosts power to 300 hp. The V6 is not available with a manual transmission.

The Charger R/T continues with a 5.7-liter overhead-valve-engine HEMI V8, which produces 370 hp and a robust 395 lb-ft of torque. It runs on regular unleaded gas, but midgrade fuel is recommended for best performance. A fuel-saver mode allows the HEMI to switch to four cylinders under light throttle. Rear-wheel-drive models are EPA-rated at 15 mpg city/25 mpg hwy, while all-wheel-drive Chargers get 15 mpg city/23 mpg hwy. V8 Chargers are only available with a 5-speed automatic transmission with Autostick manual shift control. No manual gearbox is offered.

The Charger SRT8 and SRT8 Super Bee feature a larger 6.4-liter version of the HEMI V8 with 470 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. Only rear-wheel drive is offered with the SRT8 and SRT8 Super Bee, and a 5-speed automatic is standard. Premium fuel is required. EPA ratings are 14 mpg city/23 mpg hwy.

Standard Features & Options

Typical SE equipment includes air conditioning, cruise control, cloth seats, a power driver's seat, a tilt-telescopic steering wheel, a split folding rear seat, a power trunk-lid release, remote keyless entry, a 6-speaker Uconnect 4.3-inch touchscreen, an AM/FM/CD stereo with an MP3 decoder, USB and auxiliary input jacks, auto headlamps, LED tail lamps, 17-in alloy wheels, stability and traction control, anti-lock 4-wheel disc brakes, a 3.6-liter V6 with a 5-speed automatic transmission, dual exhausts and power door locks, mirrors and windows.

The SXT trim adds the 8-speed automatic transmission, fog lamps, heated side mirrors, auto air conditioning, an interior overhead console, Alpine premium DVD audio with an 8.4-in Uconnect touchscreen and SiriusXM radio, voice command with Bluetooth, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a power passenger seat, driver's-seat lumbar control, a leather-wrapped shifter and steering wheel, heated front seats and remote starting. All-wheel drive is an option. The SXT Plus trim brings leather seating, a power front passenger seat, a heated rear seat, a heated steering wheel and 18-in alloy wheels.

Upgrading to the R/T adds the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 with a 5-speed automatic, HID headlamps, a deck-lid spoiler, sport contoured front buckets, a HomeLink garage-door opener, a 160-mile-per-hour speedometer, performance suspension and brakes, and 18-in alloy wheels. The R/T Plus trim brings leather seating, a heated rear seat and steering wheel, a power front passenger seat and LED interior accent lighting. The R/T Max and R/T Road and Track trims add 20-in alloy wheels, performance tires, heated and ventilated front seats, power adjustable pedals, a power tilt-telescopic steering wheel, paddle shifters and rain-sensing wipers.

The SRT8 drops in the 6.4-liter HEMI V8 with a 5-speed automatic transmission, Brembo brakes, heated and ventilated front seats, a flat-bottom steering wheel, a rear spoiler, Uconnect 8.4-in premium audio with navigation, 20-in forged alloy wheels, a security system, a limited-slip differential and a drive-mode selector with adjustable suspension damping. The SRT8 Super Bee is a lower-priced version that keeps the big HEMI and all the SRT8's go-fast equipment but deletes the heated seats, power adjustable steering wheel, navigation, power front passenger seat and adaptive damping system.

Popular options such as leather seating, heated and cooled cupholders, navigation, a sunroof, rain-sensing wipers, a heated steering wheel, power adjustable pedals, 20-in wheels, adaptive cruise control, a backup camera, a blind spot monitoring system, forward-collision warning and more are available in options packages.

The Charger's sporty styling and traditional rear-wheel-drive performance resonate with enthusiasts. Expect all-wheel-drive Chargers to command higher prices in the snowy Northeast and Upper Midwest.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced the following recalls for the 2014 Dodge Charger:

On models with the 8-speed automatic and rotary shifter, the driver may not be adequately warned if the driver's door is opened with the transmission in gear, creating an injury risk.

If the car is jacked up without chocking the opposite wheels, the body jack point may fail and the car may fall, creating an injury risk.

Oversensitive side-impact sensors may deploy the side and/or overhead airbags without warning, increasing the risk of a crash.

On V6-powered cars, the alternator may fail suddenly, causing the engine to stall and creating a crash risk.

Recall repairs are required by law, even if the vehicle is out of warranty. Your dealer can check to see if the repairs were performed, and if not, they'll fix the car at no charge.

Safety Ratings & Warranties

NHTSA rated the 2014 Charger at five stars overall, with four stars for frontal impacts and five stars for side impacts and rollover performance.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 2014 Charger a good rating for moderate-overlap front-impact tests, side-impact tests, roof strength, and seat and head restraint performance.

The Chrysler Group covered the 2014 Charger with a 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty including roadside assistance, along with 5-year/100,000-mile powertrain and corrosion-perforation warranties.

Dodge certified pre-owned (CPO) cars cannot have more than 75,000 miles and must be no more than 5 years old. Every CPO Charger undergoes a 125-point inspection. Those that pass receive a 3-month/3,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, plus a 7-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty from the car's original date of sale. CPO vehicles also include a Carfax report, 24-hour roadside assistance, a car-rental allowance and a 3-month trial of SiriusXM radio.

Other Cars to Consider

2014 Ford Taurus -- Ford's biggest car is available with a 240-hp 2.0-liter turbo 4-cylinder that's EPA-rated at 22 mpg city/32 mpg hwy. Also available are the standard 288-hp 3.5-liter V6 and the 365-hp 3.5-liter twin-turbo SHO V6. The Taurus boasts the biggest trunk in the segment at 20.1 cu ft., but interior room is not as generous as the car's large exterior might suggest. A torque-sensing all-wheel-drive system is also available. Optional lane-departure assist is new for 2014.

2014 Chevrolet Impala -- The stylish and roomy full-size Impala features MyLink infotainment and is available with forward-collision warning with auto braking. Powertrain choices include a 195-hp 2.5-liter 4-cylinder, a peppy 305-hp 3.6-liter V6 and a limited-production mild hybrid with a 35 mpg hwy rating from the EPA. The Impala is not available with all-wheel drive.

Autotrader's Advice

While the sporty looks and HEMI V8 sounds of an R/T might be enticing, the SXT with its 292-hp Pentastar V6 and 8-speed automatic offers a better balance of fuel economy and sensible transportation. Rear-wheel drive is always more fun from a performance standpoint, but an all-wheel-drive Charger will alleviate traction headaches in poor weather conditions.

On the other hand, if you're looking for a keeper to put in the garage for future fun, the ground-stomping SRT8 will always resound with Mopar fans. Look for a CPO Charger if possible, and check with the dealer to make sure all safety recall items are resolved.
