As a smaller, more esoteric sidekick to the sporty Genesis coupe, the 2014 Hyundai Veloster brings high style and youthful appeal at an affordable price. The Veloster shares many of its mechanical bits with the compact Hyundai Elantra sedan while breaking ground with an innovative 3-door coupe configuration and motorcycle-inspired design.

To aid ingress and egress to the rear seat, the Veloster adds a single rear door on the passenger side; there is no rear door for the driver's side of the vehicle. Though the Veloster looks like a hatchback coupe, it has a conventional rear trunk with a surprising 15.5 cu ft. of space that opens up to a generous 34.7 cu ft. of space for longer items when the rear seatbacks are folded down.

Power is modest from the 1.6-liter 4-cylinder in the base model, but the Veloster handles well, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the base four at 37 miles per gallon on the highway with the standard 6-speed manual transmission. It's value-packed with a lot of standard amenities and loaded with design flair, from a triangular motorcycle-inspired instrument panel to a racy center-exit dual exhaust.

The Veloster Turbo model brings the power to match the small coupe's fast styling and capable chassis. In addition to an entertaining 201-horsepower 1.6-liter turbo 4-cylinder, the Turbo model adds upgrades such as heated leather seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, alloy pedals, 18-inch alloy wheels, an upgraded audio system, an intake-sound enhancer, a more aggressive exhaust, faster steering, larger front-brake rotors and a more aggressive exterior appearance. The 2014 Veloster Turbo adds a torque-vectoring system to sharpen steering response in corners. Also new for 2014 is the Turbo R-Spec package, which features sport-tuned suspension and quicker steering, plus a new short-throw shifter for the 6-speed manual transmission.

All 2014 Veloster models add a standard backup camera, daytime running lamps and a driver's-side blind-spot mirror.

Standard safety features include a tire-pressure monitoring system, electronic stability and traction control, 4-wheel disc anti-lock brakes, dual front airbags, front-seat side airbags, and front and rear overhead airbags.

The 2014 Veloster coupe is a good used-car value with distinctive design flair, fun-to-drive handling and good fuel economy at a reasonable price.

What We Like

Performance of Turbo model; motorcycle-inspired design touches; center-exit exhaust; standard 7-in touchscreen; easy rear-seat access; optional glass sunroof; 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty; good fuel economy; lively handling

What We Don't

No hatchback opening for larger cargo; limited rear-seat headroom and legroom; measured acceleration of nonturbo engine; no power driver's seat

Fuel Economy & Engine Specs

The 2014 Veloster is available in base and Turbo variants. The base engine is a direct-injected 1.6-liter double-overhead-camshaft 16-valve 4-cylinder engine with variable valve timing. It puts out 138 hp and 123 lb-ft of torque on regular unleaded fuel and is available with either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Equipped with the manual gearbox, the Veloster has an EPA rating of 26 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway, while the dual-clutch automatic version has a 28 mpg city/36 mpg hwy rating. The base Veloster is not endowed with an overabundance of power, but its low weight and good handling make it fun to drive.

The Turbo model, which became available in 2013, features an intercooled, twin-scroll turbocharger that bumps the output of the 1.6-liter 4-cylinder to an entertaining 201 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. Equipped with the standard 6-speed manual transmission, it's EPA-rated at 24 mpg city/33 mpg hwy. Turbo models with the optional 6-speed automatic receive a 24 mpg city/31 mpg hwy estimate. The dual-clutch automatic is not used with the turbo engine. All Velosters are equipped with front-wheel drive.

Standard Features & Options

The base 2014 Hyundai Veloster comes well-equipped with a long list of standard items, including a new backup camera, a driver's-side blind-spot mirror, 17-in alloy wheels, air conditioning, cruise control, a tilt-telescopic steering wheel with audio controls, remote keyless entry, cloth seats, a rear spoiler, a 6-speaker AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system with a 7-in touchscreen, SiriusXM radio, Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity with voice recognition, Pandora and Gracenote apps, Blue Link mobile telematics, and power windows, mirrors and door locks. Major options on the Base model include fog lamps, automatic headlamps, backup warning sensors, 18-in alloy wheels, a leather-wrapped shifter and steering wheel, push-button starting, cloth and leatherette seat trim, alloy pedals and a navigation system.

The Veloster Turbo adds heated leather-trimmed front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, alloy pedals, proximity key entry, push-button starting, an 8-speaker LG premium audio system, fog lamps, a sport-tuned intake and exhaust, 18-in alloy wheels, a ground-effects body kit and a torque-vectoring system. The Veloster Turbo also comes with options for matte-gray paint, navigation with a backup camera, a 115-volt outlet and a panoramic sunroof.

The Veloster is a niche product with strong youth appeal. Because it's backed by one of the strongest new-car warranties in the business, it's one of the best-selling small coupes on the market. The Veloster is all about alternative style, so exterior color is a big factor when it comes to pricing. Because the Turbo model makes the Veloster's style and fun-to-drive chassis come alive, you should expect to pay more for this model than the Base.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued no recalls for the 2014 Veloster as of this writing.

Recall repairs are required by law, even if the vehicle is out of warranty. Your dealer can check to see if the repairs were performed and, if not, will fix the car at no charge to you.

Safety Ratings & Warranties

NHTSA gave the 2014 Veloster four stars for front-impact performance, five stars for side impacts and four stars for rollover resistance.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 2014 Veloster a Marginal rating for small-overlap front impacts, an Acceptable rating for side impacts and Good ratings for head restraints and seats, moderate-overlap front impacts and roof strength.

Hyundai sold the 2014 Veloster with a 5-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, an industry-leading 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty (for original owners only), a 7-year/unlimited-distance corrosion-perforation warranty and 5 years/unlimited miles of roadside-assistance coverage.

Hyundai certified pre-owned vehicles can't be more than 4 years old or have more than 60,000 miles. Every certified pre-owned Veloster undergoes a 150-point inspection. Each receives the balance of Hyundai's 5-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty and 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. Roadside assistance is extended to 10 years/unlimited miles from the vehicle's original date of sale. Also included are 3 months of SiriusXM radio and a vehicle-history report.

Other Cars to Consider

2014 Scion tC -- Scion's best-selling model gets refreshed styling and suspension tuning for 2014. The stylish coupe is powered by a 179-hp 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine teamed with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic. The tC's EPA fuel economy ratings of 23 mpg city/31 mpg hwy pale in comparison to the Veloster's.

2014 MINI Cooper Hardtop -- The redesigned 2014 MINI Hardtop is bigger and roomier. Built by BMW, the MINI Cooper offers classic small-coupe style and legendary handling but tends to be more expensive to purchase and service. You should choose an extended warranty if one is offered. The MINI's new base engine is a 134-hp 1.5-liter 3-cylinder, with a turbocharged 189-hp 2.0-liter 4-cylinder available to take full advantage of the MINI's well-sorted chassis.

Autotrader's Advice

The Veloster is proof that small cars don't have to be boring -- and the Turbo model shows that they don't have to be slow, either. While adding a dash of motorcycle-inspired style, Hyundai's small coupe also delivers many standard amenities, fun-to-drive handling and good fuel economy. While not a hatchback, the Veloster's 15.5 cu ft. trunk is huge for the class, and the added passenger-side rear door makes rear-seat access a breeze. Always look for a vehicle that's been maintained well. Selecting a Hyundai certified pre-owned Veloster is a smart choice because the buyer can assume the remainder of the outstanding 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. Also, you should make sure that any applicable recall repairs have been performed by the dealer.
