The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee continues as the brand's top offering, blending luxurious trim, on-road agility and overall refinement with amazing off-road, all-weather capability. Available with 2-wheel drive or a choice of three 4-wheel-drive systems, the 5-passenger SUV offers all-independent suspension, up to 68 cu ft. of cargo space and up to 7,400-lb towing capacity with the optional 5.7-liter HEMI V8 or newly available turbocharged 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6. A new standard 8-speed automatic transmission boosts performance and fuel economy.

The 2014 Grand Cherokee receives a freshened exterior appearance with new LED daytime running lamps. Inside is a new, customizable LCD instrument panel, a redesigned center stack with Uconnect 5- or 8.4-inch touchscreens and a new standard leather-wrapped 3-spoke steering wheel. A new range-topping Summit model adds 19-speaker premium audio, distance cruise control and advanced safety systems. For 2014, the performance-oriented SRT8 model drops the 8 from its title, receives blackout exterior trim and adds launch control and a track-mode drive setting.

What We Like

EcoDiesel fuel economy, torque and range; off-road capability; choice of three 4-wheel-drive systems; premium interior materials; ride and handling; Uconnect infotainment; SRT performance

What We Don't

Small side mirrors; high cargo floor; SRT requires premium fuel

Fuel Economy & Engine Specs

Standard on all models but the SRT is a Pentastar 3.6-liter dual-overhead-camshaft (DOHC) V6 with 290 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. With standard rear-wheel drive, it has an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rating of 17 miles per gallon in the city and 25 mpg on the highway, while 4-wheel-drive models are rated at 17 mpg city/24 mpg hwy. It runs regular unleaded.

Optional except on the SRT is a 5.7-liter overhead-valve (OHV) HEMI V8, which produces 360 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque. It runs on regular unleaded, but midgrade is recommended for the best performance. A fuel-saver mode shuts down four cylinders when cruising under a light load. Rear-wheel-drive models are EPA-rated at 14 mpg city/22 mpg hwy, while 4-wheel-drive Grand Cherokees receive a 14 mpg city/20 mpg hwy rating.

New for 2014 and optional on Limited, Overland and Summit models is a 3.0-liter DOHC V6 EcoDiesel. Built by VM Motori in Italy, the turbodiesel generates 240 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. EPA estimates are 22 mpg city/30 mpg hwy for rear-drive models and 21 mpg city/28 mpg hwy for 4-wheel-drive models.

SRT models feature a 6.4-liter HEMI OHV V8 with 470 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. It's 4-wheel-drive only and is EPA-rated at 13 mpg city/19 mpg hwy. It requires premium fuel.

All 2014 Grand Cherokees use a new, more fuel-efficient 8-speed automatic transmission with Autostick sequential shifting.

Standard Features & Options

The Laredo's standard equipment includes automatic dual-zone air conditioning, cruise control, cloth seat trim, a fold-flat front passenger seat, a leather-wrapped tilt-telescopic steering wheel with auxiliary audio controls and paddle shifters, a leather-wrapped shifter, remote keyless entry, a 6-speaker AM/FM/CD stereo with an MP3 decoder, a 5-in touchscreen with SiriusXM radio, Uconnect hands-free phone connectivity, auto headlamps, fog lamps, deep-tint glass, 245/70 on-/off-road tires on 17-in alloy wheels, a split folding rear seat, stability and traction control, dual front and front-seat side airbags, overhead airbags, a driver's-knee airbag, anti-lock 4-wheel disc brakes, a single-speed transfer case (4-wheel-drive V6 only), power door locks, power-folding mirrors and power windows.

Upgrading to the Limited nets roof side rails, power driver and front passenger seats with lumbar adjustment, heated front and rear leather seats, memory controls for the driver's seat, mirrors and radio, a heated steering wheel, a garage-door opener, rear park assist with a camera, remote starting, a 115-volt power outlet, rear USB charge ports, 265/60 on-/off-road tires on 18-in alloys, a 2-speed on-demand transfer case and Jeep's Selec-Terrain traction control system with Auto, Sand/Mud, Sport, Snow and Rock settings on 4-wheel-drive models.

Moving up to Overland trim adds standard 265/50 all-season tires on 20-in alloy wheels, perforated leather seats, ventilated front seats, real wood trim, a power tilt-telescopic steering column, a leather- and wood-trimmed steering wheel, 9-speaker premium audio with Garmin navigation, an 8.4-in touchscreen, voice recognition, SiriusXM real-time traffic, a dual-pane panoramic sunroof, a power lift gate, a cargo shade and net, a rain-sensing windshield, auto-dimming and auto-leveling bi-xenon headlamps, a full-size spare and Jeep's Quadra-Lift air suspension.

The range-topping Summit includes a 19-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, adaptive cruise control, front park assist, the Quadra-Drive II 4-wheel-drive system on 4-wheel-drive V8 models and a suite of safety systems encompassing forward-collision alert, rear cross-path detection and a blind spot monitoring system.

The muscular SRT rolls with the 470-hp 6.4-liter HEMI V8, a lowered suspension, adaptive damping, a limited-slip differential, paddle shifters, a heated steering wheel, Brembo brakes, 295/45 run-flat performance tires and 20-in alloy wheels.

Popular options include trailer towing, off-road packages and a seat-mounted Blu-ray dual-screen rear-seat video system with HDMI and RCA inputs.

Pricing

The Grand Cherokee was one of the first luxury SUVs that combined upscale comfort and style with go-anywhere capability. Four-wheel drive is almost a given for a Jeep, so expect 2-wheel-drive versions to command lower prices.

Recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced the following recalls for the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee:

A corroded vacuum brake booster may admit water. If it freezes, the booster may not provide sufficient braking force, increasing the risk of a crash.

The visor vanity-mirror lamp may short-circuit, increasing fire risk.

A faulty alternator on 3.6-liter V6 engines may lead to engine stalling, increasing crash risk.

Radio software vulnerability may allow hackers to remotely control some vehicle systems, increasing the risk of a crash.

A loose alternator ground wire may cause a loss of instrument lighting, anti-lock braking and stability control, increasing crash risk.

The driver may not be adequately warned if the driver's door is opened with the transmission in gear, creating an injury risk.

A faulty control module may disable the front and side airbags and seat-belt pretensioners, increasing the risk of injury in a collision.

A faulty steering-column module may disable stability control, increasing the risk of a crash.

On Grand Cherokees equipped with adaptive cruise control, if the driver depresses the accelerator beyond the set speed, the system may continue to accelerate briefly after releasing the pedal, increasing the risk of a crash.

Recall repairs are required by law, even if the vehicle is out of warranty. Your dealer can check to see if the repairs were performed and, if not, will fix the car at no charge to you.

Safety Ratings & Warranties

NHTSA rated 2014 Grand Cherokees built before July 22, 2013, at four stars overall, with four stars for frontal impacts and five for side impacts. Rear-wheel-drive models received three stars for rollover performance, while 4-wheel-drive Grand Cherokees received four stars. Later-build 2014 rear-drive models also achieved four stars overall, but five for frontal and side impacts and three for rollovers, while later-build 4-wheel-drive models rated five stars overall and for frontal and side impacts, and four for rollovers. The SRT was not tested.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 2013 Grand Cherokee a Marginal rating for small-offset front impacts but Good ratings for moderate-overlap front impacts, side impacts, roof strength, head restraints and seats.

Jeep covered the 2013 Grand Cherokee with a 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty that included roadside assistance, along with 5-year/100,000-mile powertrain and corrosion-perforation warranties.

Jeep certified pre-owned cars cannot have more than 75,000 miles on the odometer and must be 5 years old or less. Those that pass a 125-point inspection receive a 3-month/3,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, plus a 7-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty from the car's original date of sale. Also included is a Carfax report, 24-hour roadside assistance, car-rental allowance and a 3-month trial for SiriusXM radio.

Other Cars to Consider

2014 Ford Edge -- The Edge blends tough-guy, urban-SUV looks with roomy comfort for five and technology such as Ford SYNC and MyFord Touch. A 240-hp EcoBoost 4-cylinder offers an EPA-rated 21 mpg city/30 mpg hwy.

2014 Toyota 4Runner -- Restyled for 2014 with a new interior and infotainment, the 4Runner remains a durable, old-school SUV with a high step-in height and a trucklike ride. A 270-hp 4.0-liter V6 teams with a 5-speed automatic transmission.

Autotrader's Advice

The Grand Cherokee is one of the best offerings in the SUV field, blending crisp on-road manners with outstanding all-weather or off-road capability. We like the Limited trim, which has many features buyers look for and is available with either the 3.6-liter V6 or 5.7-liter HEMI V8. Given the choice, go for 4-wheel drive because resale value will be better. Always obtain a Carfax vehicle-history report, stay away from modified examples and search for a Jeep that's seen obvious care. A certified pre-owned Jeep is a smart way to go. Check with the dealer to make sure the Grand Cherokee you're considering has had all applicable safety recall items addressed.
