Pros: Cutting-edge technology; traditional Porsche driving capabilities; incredible performance

Cons: Enormous price tag; large production run; styling not as bold as million-dollar rivals

What's New: The 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder is an all-new vehicle.

The Porsche 918 Spyder is one of the first vehicles around to combine earth-shattering hypercar performance with fuel-saving hybrid technology. All new for 2015, the 918 Spyder offers two seats, a removable roof, all-wheel drive and a mid-engine design just like Porsche's last supercar, the V10-powered Carrera GT.

But the 918 Spyder doesn't offer a V10. Instead, it's powered by a 608-horsepower 4.6-liter V8 that works in conjunction with two electric motors: One for the front wheels boasts 125 hp, while the rear wheels are powered by a 154-hp motor. The only available transmission is Porsche's 7-speed PDK automatic, which helps the 918 reach 60 miles per hour in just 2.6 seconds. But despite its big power and impressive performance, the 918 can run on fully electric power for around 20 miles should a driver decide to go easy on the environment. That's possible courtesy of a 6.8-kWh lithium-ion battery that can be recharged from a 240-volt outlet in roughly two hours.

Not surprisingly, all that power, performance and technology doesn't come cheap. The 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder starts at around $850,000 before shipping, or $930,000 if you choose the optional high-performance Weissach Package. Add a few options and you're looking at a million-dollar price tag, which makes the 918 Spyder one of the most expensive new cars of all time.
