The top-selling seventh-generation Toyota Camry was all-new for 2012, bringing increased interior roominess, improved fuel economy and the latest safety technology. The 2014 Toyota Camry continued with that winning formula, with all premium audio systems rebranded under the Entune name. The Camry was available as a 4-door midsize family sedan, a sporty SE model or a gas-electric hybrid, offering the best Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-estimated fuel economy of any midsize sedan.

What We Like

Good ride quality on most models; spacious interior; 10 standard airbags; powerful V6; 4-cylinder engine; hybrid fuel economy; available blind spot monitoring system

What We Don't

Flat seats; anonymous styling; choppy ride in SE; vague steering; low grip with standard tires

Fuel Economy & Engine Specs

All Camry models are equipped with front-wheel drive; all-wheel drive is not available.

The 2014 Camry has two different engine options. The Camry L, LE, SE and XLE are equipped with a 2.5-liter, double overhead camshaft (DOHC) 16-valve 4-cylinder engine. Output is a healthy 178 horsepower, and it develops 170 lb-ft of torque. It burns regular unleaded gas and has an EPA rating of 25 miles per gallon in the city and 35 mpg on the highway with the standard 6-speed automatic transmission.

The Camry SE V6 and XLE V6 are powered by a 3.5-liter DOHC 24-valve V6, which produces a stirring 268 hp and 248 lb-ft of torque. It, too, runs on regular unleaded and is EPA-rated at 21 mpg city/30 mpg hwy with the standard 6-speed automatic.

The Camry Hybrid mates the 156-hp 2.5-liter 4-cylinder and a 141-hp electric motor to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). Total system power is 200 hp. The hybrid alternates relatively seamlessly between gas and electric modes. The electric system is fed by a nickel-metal-hydride battery. LE Hybrid models with 16-inch tires are EPA-rated at 43 mpg city/39 mpg hwy, while XLE Hybrids with 17-in tires net a 40 mpg city/38 mpg hwy EPA rating.

Standard Features & Options

The 2014 Camry is available in L, LE, SE and XLE trims.

The Camry L comes with the 178-hp 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine, 6-speed automatic transmission, air conditioning, a 6-speaker AM/FM/CD/MP3 stereo with iPod/USB jacks and a 6.1-in touchscreen, Bluetooth connectivity, a split folding rear seat, intermittent wipers, a tilt-telescopic steering wheel, cruise control, 16-in steel wheels, stability and traction control, anti-lock 4-wheel disc brakes, power windows, mirrors and door locks.

The LE upgrades include automatic headlamps, variable intermittent wipers, keyless entry, and steering-wheel audio controls. It adds a power moonroof and a power driver's seat to the options list. There is also an LE version of the Camry Hybrid.

Next on the Camry model ladder is the sporty SE. Standard fare includes sport suspension, fog lamps, a sport mesh grille, aerodynamic body panels, a rear spoiler, chrome exhaust tips, heated outside mirrors, sport seats, 17-in alloy wheels, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gearshift and steering-wheel paddle shifters. The SE V6 model includes the 268-hp 3.5-liter V6, 18-in alloy wheels, navigation and SiriusXM radio.

The most luxurious Camry is the XLE. It comes with dual-zone automatic air conditioning, a power moonroof, a premium touchscreen audio system, power front seats, woodgrain interior trim, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, rear-seat climate control vents, fabric door trim, 17-in alloy wheels, heated outside mirrors, chrome exhaust outlets and fog lamps. XLE V6 models add the 268-hp V6, SiriusXM radio, HD Radio, a power passenger's seat, leather seat trim, heated front seats, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a compass, a backup camera and a HomeLink garage door opener. There is also an XLE version of the Camry Hybrid.

Pricing

Toyotas have a great reliability reputation from both word of mouth and the various quality rating organizations. Therefore, clean, low-mileage models retain their resale value and command higher used-car prices. Moderating that somewhat is the fact that the Camry has been one of the best-selling cars in the U.S. in recent years, so there should be a good supply of used vehicles.

Recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced the following recalls for the 2014 Camry:

The left front lower suspension arm may separate from the ball joint, creating a crash risk.

A potential fuel-line leak in the engine compartment presents a fire risk in the presence of an ignition source.

The windshield-wiper switch may short-circuit, making the wipers inoperative, reducing visibility and increasing the risk of a crash.

Recall repairs are required by law, even if the vehicle is out of warranty. Your dealer can check to see if the repairs were performed, and if not, will fix the car for free.

Safety Ratings & Warranties

The 2014 Toyota Camry received a NHTSA 5-star rating overall, with a 4-star rating for frontal impacts, a 5-star rating for side impacts and a 4-star rating for rollovers.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 2014 Camry a Good rating for side impacts, roof strength, head-restraint, seat crash performance and moderate-overlap front impacts. It received an Acceptable rating for small-overlap front impacts.

Toyota covered the 2014 Camry with a 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty, a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty and a 5-year/unlimited-mile corrosion-perforation warranty. Additionally, routine maintenance and roadside assistance were covered for a 2-year/25,000-mile period.

Toyota certified pre-owned (CPO) cars can't have more than 85,000 miles on the odometer and must be 6 years old or younger. Every CPO Camry undergoes a 160-point inspection and gets a Carfax report. The Toyota CPO warranty covers the whole car, bumper to bumper, for 1 year or 12,000 miles, extends the original powertrain warranty to 7 years/100,000 miles, and includes 1 year of roadside assistance.

Other Cars to Consider

2014 Honda Accord -- The 2014 Honda Accord is available as a roomy sedan or a stylish coupe, both fun to drive. The 278-hp 3.5-liter V6 adds zippy performance, but the base 2.4-liter 4-cylinder's 185 hp provides ample acceleration and is EPA-rated at 27 mpg city/36 mpg hwy with the CVT. A hybrid version of the sedan, EPA-rated at 50 mpg city, is new for 2014.

2014 Volkswagen Passat -- The Passat is built in the U.S. and has a roomy cabin and large trunk. The interior trim is cheaper-looking than in previous Passats, but the car offers good bang for your buck. Engine choices include a 140-hp 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbodiesel capable of 43 mpg hwy, a 280-hp 3.6-liter V6 and, new for 2014, a 170-hp 1.8-liter turbo four.

Autotrader's Advice

With a solid reputation for durability and reliability, it's pretty hard to go wrong with a Camry. With that being said, we'd recommend the non-hybrid 4-cylinder version, which is also the choice of nearly four out of every five new Camry buyers. Toyota has built millions of hybrids, but these are complex machines with a lot of electronic components. Eventually, normal wear and tear will result in necessary specialized diagnoses and repair that will likely exceed the costs associated with conventional models. Ideally, you'll want to look for a Toyota certified pre-owned car. Regardless of your Camry choice, make sure the car you're looking at has had any applicable safety recalls performed.
