2014 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible: 5 Reasons to Buy

Editor’s note: If you’re looking for information on a newer Volkswagen Beetle, we’ve published an updated review: 2019 Volkswagen Beetle Review.

Finding a new convertible that doesn’t bust your budget can be a challenge these days, but in case you didn’t know, Volkswagen means “people’s car” in German, and the 2014 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible is the people’s car of drop-tops. It starts around $25,000, and it’s not just a great deal; it’s also a blast to drive. Here are five reasons why the Beetle Convertible is one of the best roofless values you’ll find.

Great Engines

There’s no shame in sticking with the base Beetle, because it boasts a peppy, turbocharged 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine that’ll put a smile on your face. But VW doesn’t stop there. If you want a little more urgency, the Beetle Convertible can also be outfitted with a powerful 2.0-liter turbo four that’s borrowed from the high-performance GTI hatchback. Or perhaps you’d like to drive the only diesel-powered drop-top on the market; in that case, spring for the TDI model with its torque-monster 2.0-liter turbodiesel four. Whichever engine you choose, you’re going to have a lot of fun running through the gears.

Drives Expensive

When you’re shopping for an affordable convertible, you don’t expect a premium feel from behind the wheel.

Providing an upscale experience at ordinary prices is Volkswagen’s bread and butter, though, and the Beetle Convertible is a case in point. With the top up, there’s not much wind or road noise, so you can have a normal conversation at highway speeds. Even with the top down, the cabin remains civilized. And regardless of the top’s position, the Beetle is smooth, solid and responsive on the road. Like most Volkswagens, it has that certain something that makes you feel like you’re driving a high-end product. See the 2014 Volkswagen Beetle models for sale near you

Easy-Folding Top

The Beetle Convertible’s power-operated soft-top could hardly be more user-friendly. Just press a switch, and watch as the top quietly unlatches itself and folds down in about 10 seconds. It’s so smooth and efficient that you can do it spontaneously at a stoplight. What’s more, the Beetle’s top secures itself once it’s folded down, so there’s no need to get out and install a separate tonneau cover (we’re looking at you, Chevy Camaro).

Good on Gas

The TDI turbodiesel four is well known for its amazing fuel economy, and it doesn’t disappoint in the Beetle Convertible. Expect well over 40 miles per gallon on the highway, an incredible performance for a ragtop. The gasoline turbos definitely hold their own, with the 1.8T returning up to 32 mpg hwy and the 2.0T checking in at 29 mpg hwy. In other words, there’s not a bad apple in this barrel; any Beetle Convertible you choose will be satisfyingly fuel efficient.

Room for Friends

At this price point, you’re bound to come across the Mazda MX-5 Miata as a potential alternative, but are you sure that you can live with a 2-seater? If you get the Beetle Convertible, you’ll have four usable seats, so friends and family can pile in without issue.

AutoTrader Says

The 2014 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible is a well-rounded product at an attractive price. It also features that iconic Beetle shape that never goes out of style. Don’t forget about the Beetle if you’re shopping for ragtops under $30,000. Find a Convertible Volkswagen Beetle for sale
