Although Ford's full-size Expedition has always played second fiddle to the more popular Chevrolet Tahoe in the world of large SUVs, Ford isn't content to let the Expedition fade into obscurity. For proof, consider the 2015 Ford Expedition, a heavily updated version of the full-size SUV that offers a series of new features and equipment.

What's changed for the latest model year, and is an all-new Expedition worth the premium over a certified pre-owned (CPO) 2014 model? To find out, we've compared the revised 2015 Expedition and the outgoing 2014 model in several important areas.

Exterior

On the outside, the latest Expedition offers only minor revisions rather than a full redesign, so you'd be forgiven for mistaking the new model for the old one. Look closely, however, and you'll see a new grille, a new front bumper, new wheel designs, new headlights and even a revised rear end. The profile is the same, but the 2015 Expedition adds some much-needed modern touches to the Expedition's look.

Interior

Like changes to the exterior, interior revisions for the latest Expedition are limited to the details. For example, the center stack features a completely new array of buttons and switches. The 2015 model also offers a larger touchscreen, revised cupholders and a new gauge cluster with a multicolor information screen, but big items, including the dashboard design, the seats and odd circular air-conditioning vents, remain exactly the same. We suspect that most drivers won't immediately notice updates to the Expedition's interior unless they're very familiar with the outgoing model.

Mechanicals

The biggest change to the 2015 Ford Expedition is under the hood. While the outgoing model used a muscular 5.4-liter V8, capable of 310 horsepower and 365 lb-ft of torque and mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission, the latest Expedition drops the V8 for a V6, and it's not just any V6. The 2015 Expedition boasts Ford's 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, which is turbocharged for an impressive 365 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. The sole transmission remains a 6-speed automatic, but towing capacity and fuel economy see minor increases with the new powertrain.

Features & Technology

Although interior and exterior styling may be similar between the 2015 Expedition and a 2014 CPO model, the latest Expedition boasts some crucial technology upgrades over its predecessor. The 2015 model offers a larger touchscreen with Ford's latest MyFord Touch system, for example, along with a new information screen in the SUV's gauge cluster. The latest Expedition also includes new adjustable suspension, push-button start and new safety features, including a blind spot monitoring system and rear cross-traffic alert.

While neither the 2014 Expedition nor the 2015 model are at the cutting edge of modern SUV technology and gadgets, the latest version makes some serious high-tech strides that we suspect will satisfy most shoppers interested in a full-size SUV.

Driving Experience

We've always liked the Ford Expedition's driving experience. It offers a supple, smooth ride, king-of-the-road visibility and predictable maneuverability for a full-size SUV. None of that has changed with the updates from the 2014 Expedition to the 2015 model. On the contrary, the latest Expedition seems to offer even better ride quality than its predecessor, while its other benefits remain largely the same.

Perhaps the only noticeable change to the 2015 Expedition's driving experience comes from its new turbocharged V6 engine. While last year's V8 was plenty powerful, the new V6 makes the Expedition seem downright fast, and it certainly makes the 2015 Expedition one of the quickest full-size SUVs on the market. Add to that the engine's enhanced towing capacity and its improved gas mileage, and it's hard to believe anyone would prefer the tried-and-true V8.

Safety

When it comes to safety features, both 2014 and 2015 Expeditions feature all the basics: side-curtain airbags, anti-lock brakes, stability and traction control, and an available backup camera. The new 2015 model adds a few modern safety gadgets, however, including rear cross-traffic alert and a blind spot monitoring system, which help you avoid an accident altogether.

In government crash-testing, the 2015 Expedition edged out its predecessor, earning a perfect five stars over the outgoing model's four stars. The higher score comes from a dramatic improvement in frontal and rollover crash ratings thanks to design updates in the new 2015 model.

Conclusions

The latest Ford Expedition isn't dramatically different from the outgoing model, but it offers some crucial changes. Most notably, there's a new engine with improved towing capacity and fuel economy, some interior and exterior revisions, several new features and a series of safety improvements. Although the latest Expedition will likely be outsold by the all-new 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford's new Expedition is the brand's best full-size SUV effort in years. We think it justifies its pricing premium over a certified pre-owned 2014 model.
