Like the larger X6 before it, the 2015 BMW X4 will inevitably leave some folks scratching their heads. To make an X4, BMW starts with the versatile X3 crossover, whittles the roofline down into something resembling a fastback sports car, lowers the rear seat (to maintain headroom) and calls it a Sports Activity Coupe. And the company adds a few grand to the price, so you're paying more for less space. You can see how someone might conclude that the X4 doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

But as the X6's surprising success shows, fashion-forward crossovers make plenty of sense for certain shoppers. If you don't plan to stack a bunch of boxes in the back, for instance, you can do without the X3's extra vertical cargo space. Similarly, if you won't have rear passengers on a regular basis, you can compromise on back-seat dimensions. The X4 still gives you the high driving position that crossover fans love, and it adds an injection of fresh style to sweeten the deal. For those who find traditional crossovers such as the X3 mundane, the 2015 X4 could be just the thing.

What's New for 2015?

The 2015 BMW X4 is an all-new model.

What We Like

World-class engines; standard all-wheel drive; well-crafted interior with impressive technology features; excellent optional sport seats

What We Don't

Low backseat cushion; more practical X3 sibling costs less

How Much?

$45,650-$48,950

Fuel Economy

The BMW X4 xDrive28i comes with a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine rated at 240 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), it should return 20 miles per gallon in the city and 28 mpg on the highway.

The BMW X4 xDrive35i boasts a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 that churns out 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy is estimated at 19 mpg city/27 mpg hwy.

All X4 models feature all-wheel drive, an 8-speed automatic transmission and an auto start/stop function that shuts off the engine at rest to save fuel.

Standard Features & Options

The 2015 X4 is offered in two trim levels: 4-cylinder xDrive28i and 6-cylinder xDrive35i.

The xDrive28i ($45,650) includes 18-inch alloy wheels, adaptive xenon headlights with LED headlight rings, LED taillights and foglights, auto-dimming power-folding heated side mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, a sunroof, a power tailgate, 8-way power front seats, driver memory settings, leatherette upholstery, burl walnut trim, 40/20/40-split folding rear seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth phone and audio, the iDrive infotainment system (with the premium 8.8-in display screen) and a 9-speaker audio system with HD radio, satellite radio and an auxiliary audio input.

The xDrive35i ($48,950) adds 19-in wheels but is otherwise similarly equipped.

A number of options packages are available. The Cold Weather package includes heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, retractable headlight washers and heated rear seats. The M Sport package throws in special M wheels (19-in or 20-in), an aero body kit, a unique anthracite headliner, an M steering wheel, brushed aluminum interior trim and sport seats.

The Technology package provides smartphone-app integration (including remote vehicle access), a navigation system, an upgraded instrument cluster and a head-up display. The Lighting package contributes LED headlights with automatic headlights. The Premium package tacks on leather upholstery in a variety of colors, power lumbar support for the front seats and keyless entry/start. Finally, an xLine appearance package provides exclusive 19-in wheels and various customizable trim elements.

A-la-carte options include a few of the above items plus adaptive suspension dampers, a self-parking system and a Harman Kardon surround-sound audio system.

The X4's back seat is one of its least redeeming features, though we admit we were surprised by the adequate headroom. The issue is that the sloping rear roofline encroaches on passenger space, so in order to keep the rear compartment adult-friendly, BMW had to lower the seat. That means long-legged individuals will have their knees pointing to the sky, though smaller passengers should be reasonably content.

Cargo space measures 17.7 cu ft. behind the rear seatbacks and 49.4 cu ft. with the rear seatbacks folded down. That's more on par with 4-door hatchbacks than similarly sized crossover SUVs.

Safety

The 2015 X4 comes standard with 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, stability control and six airbags (front, front-side and full-length side-curtain). Also standard is an emergency telematics package that includes an SOS button and automatic collision notification.

The Driver Assistance package adds a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors and optional adaptive cruise control. The Driver Assistance Plus package further adds lane departure warning, a blind spot monitor, a surround-view parking camera and forward collision warning with brake preparation.

Behind the Wheel

In our interior evaluation, the X4 came up aces. BMW excels at creating that elusive premium vibe in its cabins, and the X4 follows in the X3's footsteps with superb materials quality, an attractive-yet-understated dashboard and plenty of high-tech goodies. Notable standard features include power front seats with driver memory, Bluetooth streaming audio and the top-shelf version of iDrive with its beautiful 8.8-in widescreen display. We're fans of the M Sport package, incidentally, as it not only spruces up the X4's exterior styling, but it also adds a pair of highly supportive sport seats that we prefer to the standard chairs.

On the road, the X4's acceleration impresses with either engine. It's an open secret that BMW underrates the turbo-4's output, and the estimated 6.0-second dash to 60 miles per hour bears that out: The inline-6 is only 8/10ths of a second quicker. But the bigger engine is almost electric in its refinement. When you punch the xDrive35i's throttle at 50 mph, it'll leave the xDrive28i in the dust. Handling is compromised by the elevated ride height, but as crossovers go, the X4 is one of the more athletic models on the market. With regard to ride quality, we advise avoiding the available 20-in wheels; the ride is already on the firm side with the xDrive35i's standard 19-in wheels.

Other Cars to Consider

2015 BMW X3 -- If practicality is high on your list, the X3 is a value-packed alternative to its more fashionable platform mate, and it offers a very efficient diesel engine, too.

2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA45 AMG -- The new GLA-Class is technically a step down in size and luxury from the X4, but you can get the GLA45 AMG with 355 hp for about the same price as an X4 xDrive35i.

2015 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque -- While the Evoque can't match the X4's performance, it's arguably more of a head-turner, and you can get it in a novel 2-door body style.

Used BMW X6 -- If you're going to get a BMW Sports Activity Coupe, why not spend your money on a certified pre-owned (CPO) X6? Based on the midsize X5, the X6 has more power and presence than its smaller cousin, plus a better back seat to boot.

AutoTrader's Advice

With only $3,300 separating the two X4 models, we think the xDrive35i is the winner thanks to its remarkably smooth and quick inline-6. The sound and feel is classic BMW, and you don't lose much on the fuel-economy front.
