If you're looking for a new midsize sedan, we suspect you have your sights set on the usual suspects: models such as the Honda Accord, Ford Fusion, Toyota Camry and Hyundai Sonata. But two excellent newcomers to the midsize-sedan segment are the 2015 Chrysler 200 and the 2015 Mazda6, both of which have been recently redesigned to offer competitive equipment levels, modern styling, top-notch interior quality and more. But which one is better? In order to find out, we've created a detailed comparison of both cars, but first let's see what's new for the 2015 model year.

2015 Chrysler 200

The Chrysler 200 has been completely redesigned for 2015. Last year's convertible model is gone, while the sedan soldiers on with new styling, new features, better gas mileage, newly available all-wheel drive and improved technology.

2015 Mazda6

The Mazda6 sees only minor updates following a full redesign last year.

Reliability

The all-new Mazda6 earned a 4-circle reliability rating from experts at J.D. Power, indicating better-than-average reliability. The 200, meanwhile, is too new for a reliability score -- though we're a little dismayed by its predecessor's 2-circle rating, which indicates worse-than-average reliability. We hope changes to the new model improve that figure for 2015.

When it comes to warranty coverage, both cars are highly similar, touting 3 years or 36,000 miles of bumper-to-bumper protection. The Chrysler has a slight advantage in terms of powertrain coverage, though, offering 5 years or 100,000 miles of warranty life to the Mazda's more traditional 5 years or 60,000 miles.

For now, this category is too close to call, but we'll be closely eyeing the Chrysler 200's J.D. Power ratings to see if it can keep up with the highly dependable Mazda6.

Fuel Economy

The Mazda6 offers only one engine: a 184-horsepower 2.5-liter 4-cylinder that touts up to 26 miles per gallon in the city and 38 mpg on the highway in normal guise or 28 mpg city/40 mpg hwy if you opt for the fuel-saving i-ELOOP system.

The Chrysler 200, meanwhile, offers two engines. Base models use a 184-hp 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, which reaches as high as 23 mpg city/36 mpg hwy -- excellent figures, but not quite on the Mazda6's impressive level. For drivers who want more power, there's also a 295-hp 3.6-liter V6 that touts surprisingly high fuel economy of 19 mpg city/32 mpg hwy. Still, when it comes to gas mileage, the Mazda6 is our champ.

Safety

Although the Chrysler 200 is still a little too new for ratings from the federal government's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Mazda6 earned a perfect 5-star overall score in the government's crash tests. Both cars, however, earned an excellent Top Safety Pick+ score from the nonprofit Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

When it comes to safety equipment, the Mazda6 and Chrysler 200 are roughly neck and neck. Both cars offer all the latest gadgets and features you'd expect from a new midsize sedan, including items such as forward-collision alert with automatic braking, a blind spot monitoring system, rear cross-traffic alert and more. The midsize-sedan segment is known for its impressive safety, and these two cars are among the best in their class.

Technology

Because both the Mazda6 and the Chrysler 200 are recently redesigned, they offer all the latest high-tech gadgets and features you'll probably want from your midsize sedan. Both cars offer adaptive cruise control, for instance, along with automatic high-beam control, and both cars tout an available heated steering wheel and seat memory settings. They also both offer infotainment systems with app functionality.

With that said, we think the Chrysler 200 offers a slight high-tech edge over the Mazda6. Only the Chrysler offers an automated parallel-parking system and a panoramic sunroof. And we much prefer Chrysler's excellent Uconnect system to the infotainment system Mazda offers in the Mazda6. We don't think technophiles will be disappointed with the Mazda6, but we think they might feel a little more at home in the Chrysler 200.

Value

Given just how competitive the midsize-sedan segment is, no modern midsize sedan that has a hope of selling in any volume can afford to offer a bad value. Indeed, the Mazda6 and the Chrysler 200 offer roughly the same standard equipment with a $400 price difference -- a figure that stays roughly the same as you progress through these cars' trim levels. As a result, we think both the 200 and the Mazda6 offer roughly the same excellent value proposition -- as do many of their midsize-sedan peers.

Autotrader's Advice

The 2015 Chrysler 200 and the 2015 Mazda6 are two excellent cars, but they're built for different shoppers. Drivers interested in ride comfort and interior room should pick the 200, while drivers who want bold styling and standout handling should go for the Mazda. Both cars offer excellent fuel economy, strong safety ratings and cutting-edge technology and features. Neither car will disappoint -- we can promise you that. But the one you'll prefer largely depends on your priorities.
