The 2015 Chrysler Town & Country and the 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan are often called the "Chrysler minivan twins" -- and with good reason. Both include roughly the same styling, the same capabilities, the same equipment and the same powertrain. So what makes the Town & Country different from the Grand Caravan? Why would you prefer one over the other? We've researched the two vans in-depth to answer these questions and help explain the differences between both models.

Exterior

On the outside, there are only a few small changes differentiating the Town & Country and the Grand Caravan. Specifically, the Grand Caravan includes the Dodge "crossbar" grille and square, boxy headlights, while the Town & Country includes a more traditional Chrysler grille design and slightly different headlights. The two vans also offer different wheel designs. Aside from that, styling is almost identical.

Interior

If you thought the Town & Country and Grand Caravan were similar on the outside, just wait until you see the interior of the two vans. They feature the same seating configuration and almost the same interior materials. They also boast almost exactly the same dashboard and control layout -- right down to the buttons on the steering wheel, the window switches and even the air vents. Essentially, these are the same vehicles -- though we must admit that the Town & Country's center-mounted analog clock provides a slight tinge of luxury that's missing from the Grand Caravan.

Mechanicals

The Town & Country and the Grand Caravan are even more similar under the skin. Both vans feature the same standard engine: a 283-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 that returns 17 miles per gallon in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. Both vans also include the same 6-speed automatic transmission and the same front-wheel-drive layout. Peel back the similar exteriors and the nearly identical interiors, and you'll find that the Town & Country and Grand Caravan are entirely the same underneath.

Features

Given the Town & Country's starting price of around $31,500 with shipping, you would expect Chrysler's minivan to include a lot more standard equipment than the Grand Caravan, which starts closer to $21,500 with shipping. Indeed, that is the case: The Town & Country comes standard with automatic wipers and headlights, dual power sliding doors, a power lift gate, tri-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery and a backup camera. The base-level Grand Caravan model, however, includes only the basics: steel wheels with hubcaps, dual-zone air conditioning and few other features beyond basic items such as keyless entry and power windows.

With that said, the Town & Country doesn't necessarily have any features over the Grand Caravan. We say that because shoppers who spend more money to get higher-end versions of the Grand Caravan will find that Dodge's van offers everything you can get in the Town & Country -- including Bluetooth, a backup camera, a 9-inch center touchscreen and more. In essence, the Town & Country offers a more luxurious starting point than the Grand Caravan, but both models can ultimately be equipped to the same level.

Technology

Although the Town & Country offers more standard technology than the Grand Caravan, neither van boasts any unique gadgets or high-tech features that are not available in the other model. In other words, while the Chrysler has more standard items than the Dodge, a well-equipped Grand Caravan can include the same level of features as its Town & Country twin. These items include an available rear-seat Blu-ray player, a Wi-Fi hot spot, a navigation system, a remote ignition and even a 9-in center-mounted touchscreen -- in addition to a few of the latest safety gadgets, which are described below.

Safety

Given their similarities in other areas, it won't surprise you to learn that the Town & Country and Grand Caravan are a lot alike when it comes to safety -- both in terms of ratings and equipment. Both vans received four stars in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's crash-test ratings, for example -- a score comprised of four stars in frontal and rollover tests, along with five stars in side-impact tests. And both vans scored well in tests conducted by the nonprofit Insurance Institute for Highway Safety -- though neither vehicle has been submitted to their challenging small-overlap front assessment.

As for features, both vans offer roughly the same equipment. Standard items include side-curtain airbags, anti-lock brakes and stability control, while options include rear parking sensors and rear cross-traffic alert. The Town & Country features a standard backup camera, while it is optional in the Grand Caravan.

Conclusions

If you're interested in a 2015 Chrysler Town & Country or a 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan, you'll find that the two vans boast a lot of similarities -- from exterior styling and engines to interior layout and features. The only differences are in price: The Town & Country includes more standard features, while the Grand Caravan offers a value-focused alternative for drivers who don't want a minivan that starts above $31,000 with shipping. Add some equipment to a Grand Caravan, however, and you'll notice that it's practically identical to a Town & Country. It really comes down to which van happens to be available with a better deal.
