Like its predecessors, the 2015 Ford Edge crossover clearly has style on its side. But this all-new, third-generation model has matured into a remarkably well-rounded vehicle. The turbocharged 4-cylinder engine is now standard, providing respectable pep and up to 30 miles per gallon on the highway. For the first time, all-wheel drive is optional with the turbo 4-cylinder engine. The Sport trim gets an exclusive turbo V6 with 315 horsepower, and every Edge comes equipped with a rearview camera.

Is the 2015 Edge the best 2-row crossover at its price point? You'll have to be the judge of that. But there's no doubt that the Edge has raised its game this time around. This Ford is a force to contend with.

What's New for 2015?

The Edge is fully redesigned this year.

What We Like

Exuberant styling; fuel-efficient turbocharged 4-cylinder engine; luxury-grade ride and isolation; premium interior trim; high-tech features; Sport model's strong turbo V6

What We Don't

Transmission could be smoother and quicker; no third-row seat despite substantial size

How Much?

$28,995-$38,995

Fuel Economy

All Edge models come standard with a 6-speed automatic transmission (including paddle shifters) and front-wheel drive, offering all-wheel drive as an extra-cost option.

The SE, SEL and Titanium trim levels start with a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine rated at 245 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), this engine achieves 20 mpg city/30 mpg hwy with front-wheel drive and 20 city/28 hwy with all-wheel drive.

Optional on those three trims is a 3.5-liter V6 rated at 280 hp and 250 lb-ft. Fuel economy checks in at 18 mpg city/26 mpg hwy with front-wheel drive and 17 city/25 hwy with all-wheel drive.

The Sport boasts an exclusive turbocharged 2.7-liter V6 rated at 315 hp and 350 lb-ft. Fuel economy is 18 mpg city/27 mpg hwy with front-wheel drive and 17 city/24 hwy with all-wheel drive.

Standard Features & Options

The 2015 Edge is offered in SE, SEL, Titanium and Sport trim levels.

The base SE ($28,995) offers standard items such as 18-inch alloy wheels, hill-start assist, automatic headlights, dual exhaust tips, a rear spoiler, LED taillights, four 12-volt power points, a rearview camera, push-button start, cruise control, Bluetooth, Sync voice controls and a 6-speaker audio system with USB and auxiliary device connectivity.

The SEL ($32,395) throws in sweeteners such as a keyless-entry keypad, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 10-way power driver's seat and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

The Titanium ($36,495) entices with 19-in wheels, a hands-free power liftgate, keyless entry/start, a 12-speaker Sony audio system, the MyFord Touch infotainment system with an 8-in central screen and twin adaptive displays in the gauge cluster, leather upholstery, driver memory settings and a 10-way power passenger seat.

The Sport ($38,995) provides the exclusive turbocharged V6, 20-in wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, a dark grille and rear diffuser, leather sport seats with suede inserts, aluminum pedals and most of the Titanium's equipment.

Some of the standard items on the upper trims can be added to lower trims via options packages. Other options, depending on trim, include 21-in wheels, a panoramic sunroof, heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats, a navigation system, remote ignition, adaptive cruise control (with a collision mitigation system), xenon headlights and a rear-seat entertainment system with dual screens.

Safety

The 2015 Edge comes standard with traction control (including torque vectoring for improved cornering precision), stability control, anti-lock disc brakes, automatic crash notification and eight airbags (front, front-side, front-knee and full-length side-curtain). The Ford MyKey system is also standard, allowing owners to set electronic limits for teenage drivers.

Available electronic aids include a blind spot monitoring system, a forward collision warning system (bundled with adaptive cruise control), rear cross-traffic alert and a 180-degree corner-view camera system.

In crash-test ratings, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the 2015 Edge its highest rating of Good in all tested categories.

Behind the Wheel

In our interior evaluation, we noted that the 2015 Edge's sleek dashboard is quite similar to that of its predecessor, particularly when the MyFord Touch infotainment system is specified. The overall design is a bit different, but the new look doesn't strike us as a distinct improvement; the Edge already had a very modern feel inside. Still, this is one of the nicest cabins you'll find for the price, with attractive surfaces and high-quality materials almost everywhere. It's nice enough to make us question the value of the Lincoln MKX, a premium crossover that's based on the Edge.

On the technology front, it's all about the available MyFord Touch system. Much maligned by critics for various usability issues, MyFord Touch is also one of the most capable in-car computer systems in the industry, featuring super-sharp displays and an incredibly deep feature set. We don't think it's nearly as bad as the naysayers claim, but it really depends on how tech-savvy you are. If you're good at figuring out the latest gadgets, you might fall in love with it, but make sure you give it a thorough test at the dealership first.

On the road, there's plenty of room for four adults (or five in a pinch) to enjoy the Edge's exceptionally smooth and quiet ride. Handling isn't this tall, heavy vehicle's forte, but the Edge nonetheless keeps its composure pretty well through the bends, displaying good body control for a crossover. In the engine room, we'd skip the optional 3.5-liter V6 and focus on the two turbocharged choices. The base turbo 4-cylinder is more than adequate for most situations, and its fuel economy is a big draw, but the Sport's spirited acceleration will sorely tempt enthusiastic drivers. In any case, if you're paying close attention to the aging 6-speed automatic, you might be disappointed in its occasional slow and unrefined downshifts, though the standard paddle shifters are a nice touch.

Other Cars to Consider

2015 Nissan Murano -- If any crossover in this segment is more stylish than the Edge, it's the avant-garde Murano. But the Ford offers a wider range of options under the hood.

2015 Toyota Venza -- Another fashion-conscious 2-row crossover, the Venza compares well to the Edge, though its technology features lag behind.

2015 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport -- A more affordable alternative is this 2-row crossover from Hyundai. Although it used to be a compact model, it's all grown-up now, and its turbocharged 4-cylinder engine is quite capable.

Used Lexus RX 350 -- The RX's formula is very similar to that of the Edge, and you can save a nice chunk of change on a certified pre-owned example. The Edge will look and feel more modern, however.

Autotrader's Advice

The 2015 Ford Edge Titanium comes with a lot of desirable luxuries, and the standard turbo 4-cylinder engine is all most folks will need. It's a great mix of value and luxury.
