The 2015 Ford Mustang is completely redesigned from the ground up. We recently spent a week behind the wheel of a 4-cylinder EcoBoost model to get acquainted with Ford's latest pony car. So, what did we think? After a few hundred miles and a wide variety of driving conditions, we've gathered our thoughts below.

Looks the Part

Just about everyone who spent time in the Mustang said the same thing about its exterior styling: It looks great. One of our staffers, Dwight, called it more "streamlined and chiseled" than the outgoing model, noting that it doesn't seem as "bloated" as the previous generation. Another driver, Ben, told us he's "never gotten as many looks" in a test vehicle as he did in the new Mustang. While some initial skeptics wondered if the new Mustang looked a little too much like the last one, those fears seemed to be largely unfounded in person.

Great Interior, Too

Our staffers were also impressed with how the Mustang looked on the inside. One driver, Tommy, mentioned that "the retro styling on the seats and dash look really great" in the latest Mustang, while Dwight was especially impressed with improvements over the old model -- including less clutter, a larger touchscreen and handsome retro knobs and switches throughout the center stack. Several drivers also noticed that the latest Mustang's cabin makes use of more upscale materials than previous models, giving the sporty car a surprisingly luxurious feel.

A 4-Cylinder Mustang?

More important than the interior and exterior styling, however, is the engine. Last year's Mustang offered two choices: a V6 or a V8. This year, there's a new 4-cylinder in the mix. While that may sound decidedly un-Mustang-like, the new EcoBoost 4-cylinder engine looks pretty good on paper, offering more power and torque than the V6, while also improving fuel economy.

In real life, the latest engine is right at home in the Mustang. No, it doesn't make the sporty car a drag-racing champion, but neither did the outgoing V6. Instead, it offers easy power, lots of torque and strong performance, with one driver calling it "terrific" and another noting that it's "easy to get horsepower and torque" out of the engine.

With that said, our staff generally agreed on one point: We wouldn't actually buy the 4-cylinder. We're too attached to the sound of the Mustang's big V8 rumble. It's hard to walk away from that iconic setup, no matter how much power or torque the 4-cylinder makes. Still, the EcoBoost engine is an easy choice if you're choosing between it and the base-level V6.

More Comfortable, More Fun

Another interesting thing we learned from our week with the new Mustang is that it's a lot more comfortable than the old model. The ride seems smoother, more relaxed and more laid-back, with nearly all test drivers noticing an improvement over last year's model.

But don't think the Mustang's comfort has improved at the expense of its handling. On the contrary, we feel as though the latest Mustang offers some dramatic improvements in road-holding and grip. The result of all of Ford's suspension tweaks, then, is that the Mustang feels more comfortable when your driving is relaxed -- and more capable when you're really pushing it.

Our Take

We loved the 2015 Ford Mustang. Not only did the sporty Ford seem to please Camaro-owner Tommy, it even converted former Mustang skeptic Dwight, who noted that his time behind the wheel of the latest model "changed his mind" about the Mustang. Essentially, we think this is the best Mustang in years -- and possibly since the pony car era of the 1960s. But if we were ordering it for ourselves, we'd make sure ours has the V8.
