The top-selling 2015 Honda Odyssey continues with its refreshed styling, an upgraded 6-speed automatic transmission and the available in-vehicle vacuum cleaner introduced for the 2014 model. The Odyssey features a lightning-bolt beltline design, a low roof and a wide stance and offers outstanding utility with room for seven or eight passengers. It also has 148.5 cu ft. of cargo space with the second- and third-row seats folded down. A 3-mode second-row seat allows third-row access with second-row child seats in place. A total of five Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) setups are available on all but the base LX model.

The Honda Odyssey is a good used-car choice for growing families on the go, and it enjoys an above-average resale value.

What We Like

Nifty vacuum cleaner on Touring Elite; standard backup camera; up to five LATCH positions for child seats; three rows of adult-friendly seats; wide, sliding side doors; great fuel economy for the segment; fold-into-floor third-row seat

What We Don't

Nearly as long as a Mercedes Benz S-Class sedan; upper trims as expensive as some midsize luxury crossover SUVs; no all-wheel-drive option

Fuel Economy & Engine Specs

The 2015 Odyssey is powered by a 3.5-liter single-overhead-camshaft V6. Equipped with four valves per cylinder, variable valve timing and a dual-stage intake manifold, the V6 generates 248 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque on regular unleaded fuel. Equipped with a 6-speed automatic transmission, the Odyssey is rated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) at a segment-leading 19 miles per gallon in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. Front-wheel drive is standard; all-wheel drive is not available. The Odyssey's Variable Cylinder Management system shuts down two or three cylinders during light-throttle cruising to save fuel. The Odyssey can tow up to 3,500 pounds but requires premium unleaded fuel and an electric trailer brake when towing.

Standard Features & Options

The 2015 Honda Odyssey is available in LX, EX, EX-L, Touring and Touring Elite trims.

The LX trim includes a standard backup camera, 17-inch steel wheels, front and rear air conditioning, remote keyless entry, cruise control, a tilt-telescopic steering wheel, a 5-speaker AM/FM/CD stereo with an MP3 decoder and subwoofer, stability and traction control, 3-row seating for seven passengers, cloth upholstery, a power driver's seat with manual lumbar adjustment, a fold-into-floor split third-row bench seat, anti-lock brakes with brake assist, dual front- and side-impact airbags, overhead airbags, and power locks, windows and mirrors.

The EX upgrades to 8-passenger seating, 17-in alloy wheels, power-sliding doors, a removable front center console, a trash-bag ring, a 7-speaker audio system with two gigabytes of memory, a USB audio interface, Bluetooth phone integration, an 8-in color center-stack display, the HomeLink system, 3-zone automatic air conditioning, second-row sunshades, a power driver's seat with lumbar support, audio and cruise-control buttons on the steering wheel, a conversation mirror, a compass, and a gauge that tells the temperature outside.

The EX-L gains forward-collision and lane-departure warning systems, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, first- and second-row leather seats, a power lift gate, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, SiriusXM radio, heated front seats and a power front passenger seat. Optional EX-L packages add navigation or a rear entertainment system.

The Touring trim upgrades to 18-in alloy wheels, navigation, rear entertainment with a 9-in display, wireless headphones, an RCA video input, a 115-volt outlet, driver's-seat memory, fog lights, third-row sunshades, a 1-motion folding third-row Magic Seat, and front and rear ultrasonic parking assist.

The Touring Elite adds a nifty new cargo-area vacuum cleaner, a 12-speaker audio system with Surround Sound, rear entertainment with an ultra-wide 16.2-in screen, HID headlamps and a blind spot monitoring system.

Pricing

The Odyssey has consistently ranked at the top of the minivan class in quality ratings and sales numbers. As a result, resale values are high, and the prices of used Odysseys reflect that. One smart option is to purchase a certified pre-owned (CPO) Odyssey, which receives a rigorous inspection and extended warranty protection. These models typically have prices that can save buyers a considerable sum over the cost of a new Odyssey.

To get a good idea of the 2015 Odyssey's price range, investigate Kelley Blue Book's used-car values at KBB.com. You can also search the Autotrader Classifieds to see what models are for sale in your area.

Recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued the following recalls for the 2015 Odyssey:

Insufficient fuel tank welds may result in fuel leakage, which may create a fire risk in the presence of an ignition source.

The outboard second-row seats have a lever to slide the seats forward to gain access to the third-row. This lever may inadvertently remain in the unlocked position, allowing the second-row seats to slide forward suddenly in a crash and increased risk of injury to passengers.

Recall repairs are required by law, even if the vehicle is out of warranty. Your dealer can check to see if the repairs were performed and, if not, will fix the car at no charge to you.

Safety Ratings & Warranties

NHTSA gave the 2015 Odyssey a 5-star overall rating, with five stars in frontal- and side-impact tests and four stars for rollover performance.

The independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 2015 Odyssey a Top Safety Pick rating, with Good scores for both small- and moderate-overlap front impacts, as well as side impacts, roof crush, head restraints and seats.

Honda sold the 2015 Odyssey with a 3-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty with roadside assistance, a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty and a 5-year/unlimited-distance corrosion-perforation warranty.

Honda CPO vehicles must be less than 6 years old and can't have more than 80,000 miles on the odometer. Every CPO Odyssey undergoes a multipoint inspection. Those that pass receive a 12-month/12,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, extending the basic new-car warranty to 48 months or 48,000 miles and powertrain coverage to 7 years or 100,000 miles from when the vehicle was first sold (whichever occurs first). Also included is a vehicle-history report and three free months of SiriusXM radio.

Other Cars to Consider

2015 Chrysler Town & Country -- Chrysler's landmark minivan is powered by a 283-hp 3.6-liter dual-overhead-camshaft V6 mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission that's EPA-rated at 17 mpg city/25 mpg hwy. The Town & Country offers crisp steering and fold-into-the-floor second-row seats, but the third-row seat is a bit tight, and the navigation screen is small. New for 2015 is available dual-screen Blu-Ray rear-seat entertainment.

2015 Toyota Sienna -- The Sienna offers a peppy 266-hp 3.5-liter V6 that's EPA-rated at 18 mpg city/25 mpg hwy, up to 150 cu ft. of cargo space with the second-row seats removed, flat-folding third-row seats and second-row seats that slide fore or aft by nearly 2 feet. All-wheel drive is available (EPA ratings drop to 16 mpg city/23 mpg hwy), and 2015 models add available Blu-Ray rear entertainment, a rear-seat loudspeaker, a front passenger cushion airbag and an additional LATCH child-seat location.

Autotrader's Advice

The best bang for your Odyssey buck is an EX or EX-L model, which both have the features that minivan buyers want, such as 8-passenger seating, five LATCH positions for child seats, power-sliding doors and an upgraded audio system. The EX-L adds leather seating that, in addition to looking and wearing better, cleans up easier than cloth material. However, if you want the nifty in-vehicle HondaVAC built-in vacuum cleaner, you'll have to pony up for the range-topping Touring Elite model. Look for well-maintained, lower-mileage examples when possible and always get a report on the car's history. Going the Honda certified pre-owned route is always a wise choice. You should also check that recalls have been performed by a factory-authorized dealer on the Odyssey you're considering.
