Even in the twilight of its career, the 2015 Hyundai Genesis Coupe continues to mount a full-scale assault on performance coupes everywhere. Hyundai has been relentlessly improving the Genesis Coupe as of late, and this year it comes standard with the previously optional 348-horsepower V6. That means the turbocharged 4-cylinder 2.0T has breathed its last, and we're kind of bummed; it was our preferred engine last year, after all. But the big V6 breathes fire, no doubt, and Hyundai is hoping that it will make an irresistible first impression on every Genesis Coupe shopper.

If there's one thing we'd change about Hyundai's sportiest car, it's the balky manual transmission, which simply refuses to be rushed. But the 8-speed automatic makes for a compelling substitute, and we bet we could even make friends with the manual over time. While we wouldn't call the Genesis Coupe a segment leader, it's a solid offering for folks who want serious speed and style on the cheap.

What's New for 2015?

The Genesis Coupe drops both its 2.0T engine and the Grand Touring trim level, but it adds standard LED daytime running lights, and the R-Spec trim gets keyless entry/ignition and automatic climate control.

What We Like

Burly V6; above-average handling; comfortable and supportive seats; good value

What We Don't

Manual shifter doesn't like quick upshifts; hit-or-miss interior quality

How Much?

$27,645-$34,295

Fuel Economy

The two available transmissions for the Genesis Coupe are a 6-speed manual and an 8-speed automatic with paddle shifters. All models are rear-wheel drive. The sole engine is a 3.8-liter V6 with direct injection that's rated at 348 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. The Environmental Protection Agency rates it at 16 miles per gallon in the city and 24 mpg on the highway with the manual and 16 mpg city/25 mpg hwy with the automatic.

Standard Features & Options

The 2015 Hyundai Genesis Coupe is offered in base, R-Spec and Ultimate trim levels.

The base Genesis Coupe ($27,645) starts with 18-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, LED running lights and taillights, heated mirrors, keyless entry/start, automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a tilt-telescopic steering wheel, air conditioning, a trip computer and a 6-speaker audio system with iPod/USB and Bluetooth connectivity.

The R-Spec ($30,395) adds 19-in wheels, Brembo brakes with larger discs, a stiffer suspension, a limited-slip differential, a stiffer suspension and special front-seat side bolsters.

The Ultimate ($34,295) adds a sunroof, xenon headlights, rear parking sensors, a rear spoiler, leather upholstery, heated front seats, a power driver's seat with adjustable lumbar support, aluminum pedals, a navigation system with a 7-in touchscreen and a 10-speaker, 360-watt Infinity audio system.

The back seat in the Genesis Coupe is mostly for show; only small children would be happy back there for any length of time. Trunk space measures a smallish 10.0 cu ft.

Safety

The 2015 Hyundai Genesis Coupe comes with standard stability control, 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, active front head restraints and six airbags (front, front-side and full-length side-curtain). Optionally, Hyundai's Blue Link telematics system provides automatic collision reporting, emergency assistance and more.

Behind the Wheel

The Genesis Coupe's front seats provide strong lateral support and just the right mix of support and squish for long hauls. Thankfully, the wheel now telescopes; prior to 2013, it only tilted. The gauges are a bit overdone, in our opinion, peering out of deep cylindrical hoods, but we can't argue with the clarity of the electroluminescent gauges. The center stack features three round auxiliary gauges between the audio and climate controls, a love-it-or-hate-it type of flourish.

Materials quality remains average despite the presence of premium stitching. It's good enough to compete with a Camaro, for example, but it feels a bit low-rent compared to a 2 Series. We do like the 2015 Genesis Coupe's low-slung driving position and sloping dashboard, which impart a sense of sporting purpose even when you're just cruising through town.

Under the hood, the 3.8-liter V6 has a lot of giddyup, especially when you nail the throttle at cruising speeds. It can be addictive, not to mention hazardous, to your driving record. In hot corners, Hyundai's clever suspension tuning makes this rather substantial coupe feel unexpectedly compact and nimble. Body roll is minimal, and steering response is great. Road noise can be intrusive, but overall, we're pleased with the way the Genesis Coupe drives. This isn't just a sporty car with a playful character; it's the real deal for drivers who like to push the limits.

Other Cars to Consider

2015 BMW 2 Series -- A base 2 Series can cost as much as a loaded Genesis Coupe, but you can see and feel where the extra money goes.

2015 Scion FR-S -- The FR-S lacks the Hyundai's straight-line speed, but it's untouchable in the twisties.

Used Chevrolet Corvette -- You can find a nice C7 Corvette for Genesis Coupe money if you look around. It's temptingly fast, sexy and easy to work on.

AutoTrader's Advice

The base Genesis Coupe is a lot of car for the money. Once you get into the higher trims, though, the competition starts to get pretty stiff.
