While it seems like the majority of the staff here at Autotrader has taken our 2015 Kia Sedona for an extended road trip, I had yet to experience what the eye-catching minivan had to offer on the open road. Luckily for me, a recent family function required me to travel the 250 miles to Charlotte, North Carolina, for the weekend. In addition to the 500-mile round trip, a family excursion to High Point, North Carolina, was also scheduled, which included another 150 miles behind the wheel of the Kia. Finally, I was able to see what the Sedona was made for.

Classy Interior

Upon stepping into the 2015 Kia Sedona, my passengers were impressed by the 2-tone interior and stylish black trim that some were quick to compare to their own luxury vehicles. My aunt took note of the wood grain on the steering wheel, an option she seemed quite enamored by. The plush Nappa leather and reclining rear captain's chairs were also well received, and the easy-to-use rear climate controls were appreciated by all who came for the hour-and-a-half ride from Charlotte to High Point. Getting in and out of the Sedona could have been better if aided by running boards, as the step down or up can be a bit tricky for older passengers.

Fully Functional

In addition to the attractive amenities in the interior, the rear seating area was highly functional, aside from the learning curve involved in moving the seats. I realized quickly that attempting to explain how the seats recline and adjust to a group of baby boomers while driving can be an effort in futility, as I was constantly bombarded with questions regarding which lever to pull in order to accomplish the desired movement. Once the functionality is mastered, however, the seats move easily and virtually anywhere you need them to be. We were able to fit five adults and a 65-inch television inside the Sedona without having to displace anyone for the duration of the trip, which is a good thing due to the advancing age of some of the occupants.

Power to Spare

The Sedona is an absolute pleasure to drive on the interstate. The stylish Kia has plenty of power to accelerate on the highway, so passing slower-moving trucks is no problem at all, even while full of passengers. The ride is so smooth that I found myself frequently speeding without even noticing it. Admittedly, this could be due to me attempting to wrap the trip up in as little time as possible, but nonetheless the Sedona drove smoothly enough to earn the acclaim of its Mercedes-driving occupants.

The Verdict

Overall the Kia was undoubtedly the star of my trip to North Carolina. It was able to satisfy the high standards of several affluent senior citizens while somehow balancing utility and style at the same time. It's no wonder so many of my co-workers have taken the swanky minivan on their respective road trips. The only thing I need to figure out now is where I want to take the Sedona next.
