The team here at Autotrader has been itching to get our hands on the 2016 Honda HR-V, and finally our prayers were answered. An all-new model for 2016, the HR-V is developed on Honda's Global Compact Series platform, just like its smaller but highly capable stablemate, the Honda Fit. After a week with the HR-V, we can definitely see the traces of the Fit's lineage shining through, but mostly in a good way.

Nice Ride

All of our reviewers enjoyed driving the HR-V and commented on its smooth ride. Some compared it to the Fit, only with a slightly higher ride height. Dwight, a member of our data team, mentioned that the ride height felt like a midsized SUV, until one pulled up alongside the HR-V to reveal that the compact crossover was actually a few inches shorter in height. Altitude aside, the HR-V's 4-cylinder engine put up respectable fuel economy numbers, with an average of 28 miles per gallon despite our model featuring all-wheel drive. One issue we discovered was a fair amount of road noise while driving. Some drivers might not notice, but those who are sensitive to road noise might want to keep their ears open for it on a test drive.

So Fancy

The HR-V's surprisingly luxurious interior was a unanimous hit. Dwight noted the leather material on the door of the HR-V, something usually only found on much more expensive luxury cars. Much like its little brother, the Fit, the HR-V finds ways to pack a fair bit of comfort in a seemingly tiny package. The front seating of the HR-V is surprisingly comfortable for an SUV of its proportions, but the rear seats might be cramped for passengers taller than 6 feet. Still, we feel shorter road trips in the back seat for taller passengers would be tolerable.

There are also intelligent design elements within the HR-V that make it stand out in a compact-SUV segment populated with forgettable models. Tommy of our data team appreciated the stow area for small items and charging phones. He also noted the capable storage area, which had ample room for two medium-sized bags and two small bags. It's versatility like this that makes the HR-V such a quality car.

Upgrades

The HondaLink system in the Honda HR-V is basically a slightly updated version of the one featured in the Honda Fit. While we have had a few issues with the functionality of the HondaLink system, there are a few new features that we were happy to see included. One of these new features is that preset stations are now displayed along the bottom of the touchscreen. This is a welcome change from the Fit's version, in which drivers would have to toggle blindly through stations using steering-wheel controls. Climate controls have also been incorporated into the infotainment system, giving the interior an even cleaner look. One of our testers, Ben, still longed for a volume knob on the infotainment system, so maybe there is something to be said about the inclusion of simpler control elements.

Our Take

After a week with the HR-V, all of our testers agreed they would purchase one given the opportunity. The capability and fuel economy of this subcompact SUV is nothing short of impressive, and the design elements border on luxurious. Still, the HR-V isn't perfect, with its merely updated version of the clunky HondaLink system featured in the Honda Fit and fairly loud driving experience. Overall, we enjoyed our time in the HR-V and look forward to another opportunity of getting behind the wheel of this tiny dynamo.
