The 2016 Volvo XC70 is neither a conventional wagon nor a regular crossover; it straddles the two genres. Whether that's a missed target or an ideal compromise really depends on the needs and wants of the buyer. There's a limited audience for a large premium wagon that's jacked up a bit, but in the right circumstances, it could be an appreciative audience.

One thing in the XC70's favor is a certain away-from-the-mainstream charm. Another is the company's grand tradition of making great family vehicles. There used to be something special about Volvo wagons back in the day, and the XC70 has some of that old magic, evoking the 850 and 740 with its distinctive breadbox of a back end. When something is predominantly practical, it has its own particular appeal.

What's New for 2016?

The entry-level model has some extra standard equipment. Some options have also been rearranged, and a more efficient turbocharged 2.5-liter inline 5-cylinder replaces last year's inline 6-cylinder engines.

What We Like

Strong engine in the all-wheel-drive (AWD) T5; good fuel economy from base 4-cylinder engine; high-quality interior; deeply comfortable front seats; serious cargo space

What We Don't

Ponderous handling; engine stop/start feature makes its presence felt

How Much?

$38,040-$48,115

Fuel Economy

The T5 Drive-E has a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that makes 240 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. An 8-speed automatic transmission directs that energy to the front wheels. An engine stop/start feature helps conserve gas, and the Environmental Protection Agency estimates fuel economy at 24 miles per gallon in the city and 31 mpg on the highway.

The XC70 T5 AWD has the new inline 5-cylinder engine that's turbocharged to produce 250 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque. All four wheels receive drive via a 6-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy figures are 19 mpg city/26 mpg hwy.

Standard Features & Options

The 2016 Volvo XC70 comes as the T5 Drive-E and T5 AWD. Each is offered in base and Platinum trim levels.

Standard features on the base T5 Drive-E ($38,040) and T5 AWD ($39,540) include 18-inch alloy wheels, front and rear skid plates for off-road protection, roof rails, dual-zone automatic climate control, an 8-way power adjustable and heated driver's seat with lumbar adjustment and memory settings, a power adjustable and heated front passenger seat, heated side mirrors, Sensus Connect telematics and online services (including mobile Wi-Fi), low-speed forward-collision mitigation, a 7-in infotainment display screen and an 8-speaker audio system with iPod/USB and Bluetooth connectivity.

An optional Premier package comes with leather, navigation, a sunroof, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and a configurable driver information display. The Technology package comes with more advanced safety features (see the Safety section). The Convenience package includes power-folding rear headrests for better rearward visibility, a cargo cover and a folding front passenger seat. Meanwhile, the Proximity package brings a rearview camera, a power lift gate and keyless entry/ignition.

The T5 Drive-E Platinum ($46,615) and T5 AWD Platinum ($48,115) come with all of the above, plus a blind spot monitoring system, adaptive headlights and a Harman Kardon 12-speaker, 650-watt sound system.

Individual options include dual integrated child booster seats, front and rear parking sensors, and a dual-screen rear-seat entertainment system. The Climate package adds heating to the windshield-washer nozzles, rear seats, windshield and steering wheel, along with a cabin air-quality system.

Behind the 40/20/40-split rear seats is 33.3 cu ft. of cargo space. Folding down those seats reveals a capacious 72.1 cu ft.

Safety

The XC70 features standard stability control, 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, six airbags and a number of optional safety technologies, most of which come bundled in the Technology package. These include adaptive cruise control, forward-collision mitigation with automatic braking, pedestrian and cyclist detection, a driver drowsiness monitor, lane-departure warning and automatic high beams.

Behind the Wheel

As in most Volvos, the XC70's front seats are exceptionally comfortable and supportive -- all it takes is one road trip to become a true believer. The dashboard's high-quality materials, sleek floating center panel and familiar Volvo typeface are also easy on the eye.

To accommodate the 7-in infotainment screen, however, Volvo installed a central hump on the dashboard that looks like an afterthought rather than an integrated design. Nevertheless, the display increases the car's technological appeal.

For such a large vehicle, the back seat is merely adequate, providing room in all directions to suit adults of average size. The rear bench is lower than that of a typical crossover SUV, however, so taller rear passengers may find thigh support lacking.

Like the XC60 crossover, the XC70 offers optional 2-stage child booster seats in the rear outboard positions. Cargo space on both counts is slightly more than what the XC60 offers.

The base 4-cylinder engine has enough punch for most circumstances. The fact that it gets 31 mpg hwy is also hard to argue with, especially given the entry-level pricing.

The XC70 rides higher than a typical car but still feels more planted and maneuverable than the average crossover. The operative word here is feels, because the XC70 is less than athletic. In a handling competition, Volvo's sprightly XC60 crossover would win, but at least the XC70 is quiet and smooth at speed and genuinely useful in light-duty off-road situations.

Other Cars to Consider

2016 Audi allroad -- Audi's go-anywhere wagon is similar to the XC70 in concept but more nimble in the corners.

2016 Subaru Outback -- The Outback is so large that it feels more like a crossover than a tall wagon. It can save money, and it does just as well off-road, but it lacks Volvo's rich wagon heritage.

2016 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen -- The Golf SportWagen is an interesting lower-priced alternative if you don't have any plans to venture off-road.

Used Volvo XC60 -- As noted above, the XC60 has some distinct advantages over the XC70, and a certified pre-owned example could save you a lot of money.

Autotrader's Advice

If the budget permits, the AWD version with the bigger engine would provide a more satisfying drive and greater reassurance during wintertime.
