For a good part of the 20th century, Cadillac represented the pinnacle of luxury vehicles. Then, at some point in the 1970s, the definition of luxury shifted, but Cadillac missed the message. The 2017 Cadillac XT5 arrives with Cadillac's new version of luxury that includes performance, technology and quality, replacing the outgoing SRX and charging into the marketplace with new vigor. Hot on the heels of the impressive CT6 sedan, the XT5 enters the boiling midsize-premium-crossover segment with a package of standard and available features that will attract a new audience to the 115-year-old brand.

The midsize-premium-crossover segment has been dominated by Japanese and German brands for the past decade with a formula that has included sharp handling, clean interior design and sophisticated technology. The XT5 clicks in to the formula, moving the Cadillac brand to the middle of the discussion.

What's New for 2017?

The XT5 is all new for 2017, and not just in name. The crossover rides on a new platform and chassis with a new powertrain, new exterior design, new interior design and a new set of technology features.

What We Like

Excellent interior packaging with flexible second-row seating and super-comfortable front-row seats; sporty ride quality with available Continuous Damping Control rivals European competitors

What We Don't

Exterior design is less distinctive than the interior; XT5 name is barely better than SRX

How Much?

$38,995-$62,500

Fuel Economy

North America will get a single engine in the XT5 at launch, a new 3.6-liter direct-injection V6 that's rated to achieve 19 miles per gallon in the city and 27 mpg on the highway with front-wheel drive and 18 mpg city/26 mpg hwy with all-wheel drive (the XT5 will also be distributed in China, but with a 4-cylinder turbo).

Standard Features & Options

The XT5 is offered in four trim levels: XT5, Luxury, Premium Luxury and Platinum.

The XT5's ($39,990) standard features include front-wheel drive, an 8-speed automatic transmission with a torque-converter clutch, independent suspension (MacPherson struts in front, 5-link in the rear), variable-assist rack-and-pinion steering with rack-mounted electric-motor assist, StabiliTrak traction control, an anti-lock braking system, stop/start technology, a sliding and reclining 40/20/40-split second-row seat with remote fold-down capability, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a Bose premium sound system, keyless remote entry and starting, OnStar and a power lift gate.

The Luxury trim ($45,890) adds a standard UltraView sunroof, leather seating surfaces, heated front-row seats, two memory presets for the driver's-seat position (as well as the mirrors and the steering column), heated power adjustable outside mirrors, a heated steering wheel, a blind spot monitoring system, rear cross-traffic alert, rain-sensing front wipers and 18-inch machined aluminum wheels with run-flat tires.

The Premium Luxury ($52,890) adds (or replaces) a Bose 14-speaker Studio Surround sound system, the Cadillac User Experience (CUE) infotainment system with navigation, the Driver Awareness Package (which brings a Safety Alert Seat, forward-collision warning, a following-distance indicator, lane-keep assist with lane-departure warning, front pedestrian detection and front automatic braking), LED headlamps, 20-in aluminum wheels, ventilated front seats and real-time damping suspension with Tour, Sport and Snow (all-wheel drive only) modes.

The Platinum trim ($63,495) adds (or replaces) all-wheel drive, a reconfigurable 8-in color gauge cluster, semi-aniline full-leather seats, heated rear outboard seats, a micro suede headliner and the Surround Vision Camera.

Optional features available on all trim levels include a rear-seat DVD entertainment system ($1,995), cargo management and towing accessories ($20-$350), an engine block heater ($100), a compact spare tire ($350) and exterior trim enhancements ($70-$355).

Safety

Crash-test and rollover ratings have not yet been announced for the XT5.

Each XT5 comes with airbags (driver and front-passenger, front and rear side-curtain, and driver's-knee), LED daytime running lamps, rear park assist, a rearview camera, a tire-pressure monitoring system, traction control, anti-lock braking and OnStar.

Optional safety features include automatic collision braking, automatic park assist, automatic safety-belt tightening, a following-distance indicator, forward-collision alert, pedestrian detection, front and rear park assist, lane-keep assist with lane-departure warning, a rear-camera mirror, rear cross-traffic alert and a blind spot monitoring system.

Behind the Wheel

Cadillac has been quietly remaking its lineup with a new focus on the driver. Forget the soft and floaty, traditional, American luxury-car ride, and meet the sharper, crisper handling of the new Cadillac. The XT5's all-new chassis, suspension and steering system mate beautifully with the lusty V6 engine and the smooth, electronic-shifting 8-speed automatic transmission to deliver a driving experience that is much better than the outgoing SRX. Selectable drive modes include a downright assertive Sport mode with stiff suspension settings, shift points that hold revs and sharp steering. Touring mode smooths out the ride and performance in a good way for road trips and highway drives.

In the cabin, Cadillac's designers and engineers have improved the look and build quality of the dash, doors, center console and seats. The latest generation of Cadillac's CUE infotainment system works very well, and standard OnStar turn-by-turn navigation brings a human interface to the technology. Press the OnStar button, and a real human being answers, helps you find your destination and then downloads directions to your vehicle while you continue to drive and keep your eyes on the road and your hands on the wheel.

Second-row passengers get a great ride too, thanks to comfortable reclining seats. You can slide the rear seats fore and aft to make room for cargo, which adds great utility. The XT5 is even capable of towing up to 3,500 pounds.

Other Cars to Consider

2017 Lexus RX -- The midsize-luxury-crossover leader, the RX had a recent makeover and is available with a V6 or a hybrid gasoline-electric powertrain.

2017 Audi Q5 -- Audi's modern interiors are among the best in the class, and the Q5 can be loaded down with high-tech features and a very intuitive telematics system.

2017 Mercedes-Benz GLE -- Mercedes-Benz lavishes its midsize luxury crossover with a sophisticated array of safety systems, both passive and active, along with superb ride quality.

Autotrader's Advice

The 2017 Cadillac XT5 leapfrogs the outgoing SRX's also-ran status to achieve true competitive stature among midsize-luxury-crossover vehicles. Shoppers who have overlooked Cadillac when seeking a high-quality premium driving experience now have a reason to consider an American vehicle. The Luxury trim level (starting at $45,890) is the sweet spot in the lineup, with a relatively low price and a nice suite of premium features. The XT5 deserves serious consideration at any trim level and will be a pleasant surprise to many.
