2017 Kia Sorento: Cabin Comfort

Our editor, Brian Moody, introduced our long-term 2017 Kia Sorento and covered the interior in a past review. But we’re so impressed with this cabin, we wanted to go into how much the interior of our Sorento has improved over the previous generation.

One of our staffers leased a previous-generation Sorento EX V6. It came with similar equipment to our long-term 2017 Sorento, including leather, a sunroof and Kia’s UVO infotainment system. However, the new generation makes the interior of the 2013 Sorento EX seem like it was a nicer rental vehicle at best. If you look at the seating material of our long-term versus the 2013’s, our 2017 provides luxury-like leather, contrasting stitching and the overall look and feel of a premium-level vehicle. The previous generation offered a basic leather surface with not a lot of design finish. In addition, the seating in the 2017 Kia Sorento is much more comfortable and supportive over the 2013 model, making for a better driving experience on long roadtrips as well as during the daily commute. And some of us have really taken to the Sorento’s ventilated seats feature, which makes a truly big difference in the depressing heat of summer in the South.

Another big difference between the two vehicles is the infotainment system. You would expect there to be an upgrade, but it’s evident there was a big leap here in features and functionality. The screen feels almost twice as large, with the knobs being more weighted and substantial over the previous generation’s. The touchscreen response is also vastly improved from before.

Other differences we noticed are softer touch surfaces, better-contrasting material and a simpler, more ergonomic design as part of a more intuitive interior package. Kia did an excellent job moving the Sorento up in its vehicle class. The price did move with it, but it’s clearly worth taking a look at and even cross-shopping against premium luxury SUVs from Audi and BMW. We’ll keep you posted as we continue to spend more time with this well-designed and well-crafted crossover. Find a 2017 Kia Sorento for sale
