The 2017 Volvo V60 Cross Country occupies a niche that slots somewhere between a compact crossover and a regular wagon. It has all-wheel drive as standard, along with 7.9 inches of ground clearance and skid plates, but that still puts it lower to the pavement than, say, a Honda CR-V. Which has several advantages.

Loading things into the cargo area isn't such a strain on one's back. It's easier for dogs to jump up and in. And the lower center of gravity (compared to that of a regular crossover) will contribute to a feeling of stability while driving. But those wanting to tackle that dirt road leading to the lake and/or are looking for some extra reassurance in bad weather should also appreciate the all-wheel-drive system, while their passengers will enjoy the premium feel of the cabin. Speaking of the canine connection, the V60 Cross Country has retractable dog netting directly behind the rear seats.

This machine also has plenty of power, thanks to a new turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. If the idea of a high-riding crossover doesn't blow your whistle, then the V60 Cross Country merits a closer look.

What's New for 2017?

The old 5-cylinder engine has been replaced by a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder unit. And this is now linked to a new 8-speed automatic transmission.

What We Like

Genuine trail capabilities; punchy turbocharged acceleration; stylish inside and out; comfortable front seats; standard all-wheel drive

What We Don't

Tight back seat; tight cargo capacity

How Much?

$42,695-$46,345

Fuel Economy

The V60 Cross Country has a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine rated at 240 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. A new 8-speed automatic transmission directs that drive to all four wheels.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the V60 Cross Country achieves 22 miles per gallon in the city, 30 mpg on the highway and 25 mpg in combined driving.

Standard Features & Options

The 2017 Volvo V60 Cross Country comes in base and Platinum trim levels.

The base V60 T5 AWD Cross Country ($42,695) includes 18-inch alloy wheels, a sunroof, roof rails, LED running lights, power-folding/heated side mirrors, black fender extensions, front and rear skid plates, rear parking sensors, rain-sensing wipers, 8-way power-adjustable front seats with driver's-side memory settings, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, the Volvo Sensus Connect infotainment system with a 7-in color display and telematics (including mobile Wi-Fi), navigation, smartphone integration (including the Volvo On Call app with remote car control), Bluetooth and an 8-speaker audio system with USB connectivity, satellite radio, HD Radio and an auxiliary audio input.

The V60 T5 AWD Cross Country Platinum ($46,345) adds active xenon headlights with washers, a 12-speaker/650-watt Harman Kardon audio system, the Convenience package (including power-folding mirrors, keyless entry/ignition, sport seats, a rearview camera and a universal garage door opener) plus the Technology package (including adaptive cruise control, forward-collision mitigation with automatic braking, pedestrian and cyclist detection, a driver drowsiness monitor, lane-departure warning and active high beams).

The Convenience package and Technology package are optional on the base V60 Cross Country. The optional Climate package adds heated front and rear seats, a heated windshield, a heated steering wheel, heated windshield-washer nozzles and an interior air quality system. The Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) package includes blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front parking sensors and lane-change assistance.

Individual options include piano-black inlays, dual outboard 2-stage child booster seats and a dual-screen rear entertainment system.

Cargo capacity is a lowlight, maxing out at just 43.8 cu ft. That's less than the compact VW Golf hatchback.

Safety

Standard protection features include active front head restraints, anti-lock disc brakes, traction and stability control with torque vectoring, and six airbags (front, front side and side curtain). As noted above, the Technology package adds several safety technologies.

Although the Cross Country itself hasn't been crash-tested, the regular V60 on which it's based received the top score of Good from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in every category. The institute has also made the V60 a Top Safety Pick+.

Behind the Wheel

The interior is crisp and clean, with designer touches such as Volvo's "floating" center stack setting it apart from mainstream rivals. The quality of materials is excellent, and the restrained dashboard styling lends an air of sophistication. Seat comfort up front is stellar, though rear passengers may find legroom somewhat limited.

Ride comfort is exemplary on most surfaces, and not much ambient noise makes it into the cabin at speed. There's ample turbocharged power for passing and merging. In corners, there's naturally a little more body roll than in a regular V60 because of the taller ride height, but road manners are fundamentally solid.

Other Cars to Consider

2017 Audi allroad -- The allroad is a similar model to the Cross Country and offers tighter handling.

2017 Subaru Outback -- The larger Outback could feel unwieldy after a spin in the V60 Cross Country, but it's a no-brainer for people who want maximum cargo space: 73.3 cu ft. in total.

2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack -- The Alltrack is a new variant of the SportWagen, offering all-wheel drive, 170 hp, 66.5 cu ft. of cargo space and 6.9 inches of ground clearance. It's less expensive than the Volvo as well.

Used Mercedes-Benz E-ClassWagon -- The E-Class wagon is a bit larger than the Volvo, but also a lot nicer. You can find one with all-wheel drive (badged 4Matic) at a great certified pre-owned (CPO) price.

Autotrader's Advice

There's a $3,650 difference between the basic and Platinum versions, but the latter's extra features make it a tempting choice.
