Here’s something I never thought I would say: I could not WAIT to start driving a minivan again after several months with an SUV. Autotrader’s executive editor, Brian Moody, recently confessed to being a minivan addict, and I think I’ve become one myself. I realized this when I became abnormally giddy after learning our long-term 2018 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid would be heading down to Atlanta, Georgia from Charlotte, North Carolina, where one of our contributors, Lindsay Martell, had been driving it for the past few months. Fast forward a few weeks in which Mr. Moody chauffered his out-of-town guests around in the Pacifica, and the keys finally landed on my desk.
I’m not sure who was more excited to be in the Pacifica, me or my children. There were audible squeals when the sliding doors opened for the first time (that was the kids, not me — promise!) and they laid eyes on the dual rear-seat entertainment screens.
It’s only been a few weeks of driving the Pacifica, but here are a few things I’ve noticed so far:
- The 2018 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is supposed to have 33 miles of electric range, but the most I’ve been able to get is 31 when fully charged. We think this could have something to do with the electrical system in my home and/or the frigid temps here in Atlanta lately, so we’ll report back when it warms up a bit. The good news is, it doesn’t really matter because 31 miles is more than enough to get me to my kids’ school in the morning, to the office, back to pick the kids up in the afternoons and then home. I’m able to charge it entirely at home overnight, never needing the chargers at the office, which are highly coveted and not nearly enough to go around.
- My kids are LOVING the games on the entertainment screens. We had a long-term 2017 Chrysler Pacifica (non-hybrid model) a few years ago, and while we occasionally watched a movie during a road trip, we rarely took advantage of the screens. I think it really has to do with the ages of your children — they were too young back then, but now at seven and four, they are the perfect ages to enjoy some of the games included in the minivan’s entertainment system. My 4-year-old son has become shockingly good at tic-tac-toe, and my 7-year-old daughter is legitimately learning stuff from Hanging Fruit and Math Flash Cards. It’s a win-win for all of us!
- There doesn’t seem to be a rhyme or reason behind the Pacifica remembering some of my settings. Some mornings I get into the car and the seat and steering wheel warmers are already on from the evening before. But other mornings I have to start fresh and turn them on first thing. It doesn’t make any sense to me, but I’m going to investigate further and report back.
More to come as I continue my time with this hi-tech minivan. I have a feeling my colleagues are going to have to pry the keys away from me … it won’t be pretty, I assure you. Find a Chyrsler Pacifica Hybrid for sale near you
